Well autumn is well and truly here… but that didn’t stop Archer and I having a fun day out at the weekend at a local ploughing match and fun dog show. We are fully kitted out for winter weather here at Fur & Field Pet Services! Whilst we can’t guarantee your dog will come home sparkly clean and dry, we will always try our hardest to give them a dry and clean before they go back in your home.

What is the difference between a dog trainer and a dog behaviourist? This is a completely unregulated industry in the UK with a lot of people claiming to offer more than what they are trained for and capable of. Always think twice before booking anyone and don’t be afraid to ask questions, see evidence of qualifications and experience. For more information and to find out who you should book, read on and don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Breed Specific Fulfilment or Enrichment. What is it and why is it important?
All dogs were originally bred for a purpose, from companionship to herding, protecting, finding and retrieving game and more. When looking for a dog breed for your home and lifestyle, first look at what they were bred for. This can always give you some idea of their energy levels, enrichment needs and what they will be like to live with.
For example a herding breed such as border collies are bred to be able to run all day with high levels of mental stimulation. They will need far more exercise and stimulation than a companion breed such as those from the ‘Toy’ breed category.

So what is breed specific fulfilment/enrichment? In its simplest form, it’s providing your dog with enrichment based on their breeds specific needs. So for gundog breeds this is likely to be retrieving work, scent work etc. You will be fulfilling your dogs need to hunt, retrieve and more. This can help with understanding and supporting a variety of behavioural issues as well as helping to tire your dog out. Think no more spaniels with seemingly endless energy!!

What activities can you think of to provide breed specific fulfilment for your dog?

A particularly important one this time of the year…

No dog died from missing a walk but lots of dogs die from a walk on a hot day. Here are some top tips on how to entertain your dog from the safety of your own home!
~Long lasting treats & chews are great for keeping your dog entertained. The act of chewing is a calming behaviour and the long lasting chews will tire them out physically & mentally. Remember! Never give your dog rawhide or cooked bones!
~Early Morning & Late evening walks. If your dog really does need a walk, avoid the middle of the day when it is hottest. Stick to shady spots and avoid hot pavement where possible.
~Paddling Pools & Water Activities. A good dip in a pool or a play with a sprinkler can be a great way to release some energy without them getting too hot.
~Play games to tire them out mentally. Trick training, search and sniffing games are all great ways to mentally tire your dog without over exerting them physically. Hide treats or toys and get your dog to hunt them down for quick and fun games to play together.

If you do suspect your dog has overheated, see medical attention as soon as possible. Remember not to cool them down too quickly, don’t cover them in ice cold water. Instead put them in a cool dark place, keep them calm and contact your vet. Offer them cool but not ice cold water to avoid shock.

Things to look out for when searching for a dog walker…
This is such an important topic, there is currently no regulation regarding dog walkers, anyone can set up and claim to be a professional. So how can you wade through the masses and find someone genuine?
•Are they insured? Any dog walker should be able to provide evidence of valid insurance, including public liability. If you’re unsure, just ask!
•Are they first aid trained? Accidents can occur at any time! Being first aid trained can ensure that your dog received appropriate medical care as soon as possible. Also make sure your dog walker is carrying an appropriate pet specific first aid kit at all times!
•What qualifications do they have? Does your dog walker have good understanding of the dogs they are working with? Understanding behaviour and body language is key to success. A great dog walker will always be looking to improve their knowledge and undertaking new qualifications to better their work.
•What experience do they have? Have they owned dogs themselves? Worked with them in a professional setting? Find out what experience they’ve got!
•How are your pets being transported? If your dog walker needs to transport your dogs, are they being safely and legally contained? Dogs legally need to be restrained either in a crate, behind or dog guard or with a suitable restraint. Make sure your dog is being contained correctly and safely.

If all of these measures are in place, and hopefully more! Then go ahead and book that meet & greet, ask all your questions, see how they interact with your pet and go from there.

If you have any questions or comments, just get in touch now and we will do our best to help you :)

Archer here with a reminder to let your dogs chill and rest in the heat! No dog died from missing a walk but this heat can pose serious and life threatening risks to your dog! Beat the heat and get out early or late evening.
We will always swap our walks to early or late evenings where possible, and provide pop in services instead of walks in high temperatures. Your dogs safety is paramount!!
