Last Saturday. I delivered my gundog workshop.
I love doing these.
I hope this shines through.
The attendees were amazing.
Lovely bunch of people.

Something funny did happen.
This off lead dog come and interrupted the class.
Greeted all the dogs which they are handled really well.
I had left my gundog training bag on the floor.
This dog stole one of my dummies from my bag and paraded around the park.

I had to laugh.
Don't get me wrong. it was annoying.
But what bothered me the most was the owner gave me back my dummy
and DIDN'T apologise.
I was fuming at that.

The owner might have been too embarrassed or couldn't care less.
I am not sure.
We have all been there.
But I would have apologised.

It's week 2 of my classes and I start teaching Recall.
This story came at a perfect time.

If you are struggling with recall or lead pulling, then why not apply for a space at my classes.
Spaces are selling fast for January intake.
Here's all the info

This is what Lisa , one of my attendees had to say about my classes.

I found Harriet very approachable and she explained things clearly.
Knowing what I was experiencing was normal behaviour for my teenage puppy . Spending quality 1 to 1 time with River . Made to feel welcome .
I feel more confident. To be consistent. Feeling in control. Yes I would definitely recommend Harriet ( I already have )

Calling all frustrated dog owners*

Are you strong enough to walk your puppy?
Has your cute bundle of fluff turned into a teenage troublemaker who ignores and embarrasses you?
Are you worried your dog will run off and never come back?

I might be short, 5ft3 inches to be exact.
I haven’t met a dog that I couldn’t control using my ‘tame your teen’ formula.

You will discover this by coming to my Award winning ‘ tame your teenage troublemaker’ programme starts Monday 4th November @ 7:30pm Held at Pebsham Community Hub ( 1 space left) or Friday 8th November @ 1pm held at St Stephen’s church Hall ( 1 space left).

Problem puppy to tame teenager in 5 weeks.

I have had great results so far.
This is what Mel, one of my attendees had to say about my classes.

‘I found pawtastic gundog adventures via a Facebook post and I think it was the ‘Tame your teenage dog’ that was exactly what I needed as I have a teenage dog that has been going through a little rebellion recently. The price seemed affordable and it seemed to cover most of the issues that I was dealing with, so I enrolled myself and dog. Course participants are kept at small numbers so you get the most attention and help from Harriet. Myself and my dog came on leaps and bounds by the end of the 4 weeks, I found Harriet so understanding and she really helped explain things as simply as possible for me as I am on the autistic spectrum so can sometimes get easily confused or overwhelmed by too much information. Harriet was amazing and I’d recommend her whether you are also Neurodiverse or Neurotypical. My dog’s behaviour has improved immensely and I realise the importance of repetition and practice to get better results, I’m feeling much more confident in myself to train my dog to behave the way I want him to behave and I know Harriet is only an email away if I need any advice. If you have a cheeky dog going through teenage tantrums then don’t delay, enrol today as it’s such a helpful course’.

You too, can achieve similar results with your dog.

There are limited spaces in each class so that everyone gets the help and support they deserve.
My classes are very popular and you will need to apply for a space.

Today is National Author Day.
In 2021, I published my first book, 'Teenage Pet Gundog Firework survival guide'.

I spent years watching my parent's dogs, Barney and Jake being so terrified of fireworks.
It really is the worst feeling, being powerless, not knowing how to make them better.

That was the reason why I wrote the book.

I also wanted to help other owners in the same boat.

If it was just Bonfire night that we have to worry about, then it wouldn't be so bad.
These days, people set fireworks off for every occasion, New Year's day and Diwali to name a few.

In the book, I share with you all my practical tips and advice to stop your dog from being scared of fireworks.
It is packed with humour so hopefully it will make you smile as well.

You can either buy it from me or from amazon.

Wishing you a stress - free firework season

This is what Jamie, one of my attendees had to say about my classes;

‘Harriet was lovely and would definitely recommend her to anyone. Gave us homework every week with easy to follow tasks which has definitely improved my dog’s obedience on and off lead. I appreciate the feedback she gave each class. The class sizes were small, meaning I felt I got personal pointers, and my dog was much calmer’ – Jamie & Zelda

Today is National Make a dog's day.
This is all about finding a way to put a smile on our dog's face.
Well, it's the least we can do as they spend most of the year making us happy.

To celebrate, I am thinking of taking Finn to his favourite place, the beach.
And later, he will have his favourite chews.

For Rose, I will be taking her to the park to do her favourite thing, hunting for treats and tennis ball.

What are you going to do to make your dog's day?

How about finding an outlet for your dog's natural instinct?

Dogs are much happier, when they are doing a ‘job’, what they are bred to do.

Why not sign up for my gundog workshop on Saturday 9th November.
Fun packed 2 hours of gundog foundation training, retrieving, heel walking, hunting, steadiness, introduction to sit, stop on whistle and recall.

Early bird offer ends this Sunday.
Spaces are gone already!

Enjoy your day

Today is National Fetch Day
The game of Fetch has been played for years between human and dogs.
It is a great way to bond with your dog.

My boy, Finn loves Fetch. His favourite toy is the Frisbee.
I encourage him to fetch many different things.

In the past, he hasn't always been that great at giving me the toy.It likes to play 'mine, mine you can't get it'.

Over the years, I have worked on his delivery and now, I can get a nice solid retrieve from him by using L*z Graham Retrieving roll.

You are probably wondering what the hell is that......I explain all in this video.

Go out and play fetch with your dog.
if you want to brush up on your dog's retrieving skills then how about signing up for my gundog workshop on Saturday 9th November.

Grab your early bird offer at lowest price of £65, price will go up to £129 on the 27th October 2024 at 5pm. Only a few spaces left so book today to avoid disappointment.

Happy Fetching

16/10/2024

One day in the woods, Finn met a French Bulldog.
He tried to romance her with his Labrador charm.
They fell in love.

Ok, it didn't quite happen like that.

Finn sniffed her and would not leave her alone.Weird I thought. I become invisible. Eventually I spoke to her owner.
I said, 'My dog seems to like yours'
She replied 'Oh it could be because she's in season'.
Ah I grabbed his lead and attached it straight away.
Probably the fastest I have ever moved.

Finn was obsessed with her. He was pulling me towards her. From that moment, I knew I had to neuter him.
So I did ..............

That was about 3 years ago.Sometimes, I regret my decision.
I wish I had looked at other ways like a chemical castration.
I feel it has knocked his confidence meeting other dogs especially unneutered big dogs.

I can't change it but I can help owners in a similar situation. Give them all the information so they can make the right decision for their dog.

Watch the video, where I bust a myth. The only way to calm a dog down is by proper consistent training.
If you want help, then apply for my teen classes, which start in November. Only a few spaces left

*Calling all gundog owners*

I am inviting you to grab the early bird offer for my ' Gundog Fun workshop' on Saturday 9th November 2024.

I will be covering gundog foundations such as retrieving, heel work, recall, hunting, steadiness and introduction to sit and stop on whistle.
Your dog needs to know basic obedience such as recall and wait/stay etc and be comfortable around other dogs.

The benefits of gundog training;
🐶 better relationship you will develop with your dog.
🐶 More fun with your dog.
🐶 give your dog an outlet for his or her natural behaviour.
🐶 less boredom and destructive behaviours.
🐶 well mannered dog
🐶 happy and fulfilled dog
🐶 builds confidence in both owner and dogs.

I want owners to learn gundog training in a fun and non ‘military' environment. I can guarantee once you get started you won’t want to stop.
It’s highly addictive, rewarding and 100% fun.

This is what my lovely client, Fiona had to say about my previous gundog workshop; 'We wanted to come for an introduction/ taster session with Nellie to see if it was something that would be good for her to do. We enjoyed it all, it was good for us to see the more experienced dog and handler, we got some good tips to take away with us too. Our biggest takeaway was probably that dogs should be walking on their walks and not ‘self employed’ that’s not something that we’d really thought about before. The only thing to add is thank you for a super session, we were pleasantly surprised that Nellie wasn’t more distracted with the passers by and the dogs playing fetch’ .

Grab your early bird offer at lowest price of £65, price will go up to £129 on the 27th October 2024 at 5pm.
Spaces have gone already, so book your place today.

Time goes so fast, doesn't it dear reader.
I can't believe I am looking around Secondary Schools with my daughter, Scarlett.
It doesn't seem long ago since she started at Primary school.

I can remember when I was looking at secondary schools with my parents.
I wasn't totally happy with the one I went to.
But it's done now.
It's really important to me that I pick the right one.

Scarlett will be eleven in November,
She isn't officially a teenager yet but she certainly moans and groans like one.
She doesn't do everything I ask.
I am waiting for her to say 'I'm not your slave' but she does storm off to her room so she is half way there to becoming a girl version of 'Kevin'.
If you know, you know.

A similar thing, can happen with our teenage dogs,
We ask them to come and they take one look at us.......
And decide to go and greet that dog instead.
They might as well, have put the middle finger up.
It does feel a bit like that.

Thankfully our teenage dogs are not in this stage for too long but it is important to do something about it otherwise you will continue to have a dog that won't come back when called.

I am getting booked up for November teen classes, only a few spaces left for daytime and evening so if you haven't yet, apply for your space

10/10/2024

Yesterday, I took Finn out on a walk at the park.
We made a friend.
A bouncy Pointer cross wouldn't leave us alone.
Owner was nowhere to be seen.
He kept jumping all over me.
Finn didn't look happy with that.

The owner did finally appear.
She shouted 'Joey. Joey' quite alot.
So I assumed that was the dog's name.

I did wonder if the owner had named him after Joey from Friends.
It would have been a lot nicer if Joey asked ' How you doin?'
instead of jumping up at me and trying to take Finn's ball out of his mouth.

Owner did nothing but shouting.
I think everyone knew he was called Joey except well Joey.

The owner's first mistake was not teaching a good recall cue like 'Come' no wonder he wasn't responding.
We say our dog's name like 30 times a day 'I need to walk Finn' and 'I need to feed Finn'.
There's no meaning for them, it's just white noise so they choose to ignore it.

The second mistake was to continue to repeat his name.
If a command or cue is not working then what is the point in continuing to say it. She may have got a better result if she said 'what's this',
After the third 'Joey', I would have done something else.

We have all been there.
But a apology would have gone far.

Most days, we have a off lead pest that refuses to go back to his or her owner.
This is the sort of thing that I cover in my progression outside class where we go to a different locations for 4 weeks and I help you to deal with all the distractions.

This next class starts on 12th October 2024
There are limited spaces and this will be the last one of 2024.

If you are lacking in confidence out on walks, then this is the course for you.

Feel free to ask any questions,

Harriet
