It’s true what they say, a problem shared really is a problem halved and it’s no different when it comes to our dogs…

Sharing the stress with a non judgmental and caring trainer should feel like a heavy weight lifting off of your very tired shoulders 🪶☁️

Shedding light on once dark and confusing areas, along with the reassurance that we will be there through every step of the way is music to most clients ears.

This sweet Spaniel is Ollie, who is part of my growing MK team. He’s been on a rocky road over the past couple of years but we’re working through one challenge at a time together.

He’s now mastered most of our indoor work (super clever boy!) so we’ve moved on to tackling the hurdles of the unpredictable outside world 🌎

We’ve got this Ollie 🤎

💔 Sadly Dior has been returned so we’re back fostering her again 💔

Do any of my followers have a 3 legged pug shaped hole in their home and heart for Dior?

She’s such a special girl who gives so much love but just seems to receive constant bad luck in return 😔

I’m determined to find her the right home, with people who will give her time to settle and truly understand her.

We really want to continue to foster different dogs in need but at this rate I‘m not sure if this is a sign for us to adopt her ourselves…

Problem solving is a super power that I’m constantly using when training 🧠

I first met Ruby, the sweetest cockapoo, under the impression that she needed a little help with basic toilet training after some regular accidents in the house💩 💩

Although after some digging and problem solving we soon realised this wasn’t the case at all!

Ruby knew the exact desirable place to go to the toilet and is more than capable of holding her wee’s and poo’s for reasonable time frames.

The problem lies in the space around her and sometimes if a stressful event (in her eyes) may of taken place before hand. When Ruby is left alone with too much space she can find it over whelming and will toilet in an attempt to self soothe, particularly when sleeping in the kitchen over night 🌚

So…we needed to some how make things small with out rebuilding the whole house of course!!

We started with a cosy crate in the kitchen over night and have now moved onto a bigger, more open pen. This evening (after a week of success) the pen will be opened up further to create a larger space for Ruby and will keep growing as long as she is comfortable.

Our goal is that we will be able to have a small divider across part of the kitchen, splitting it in half when Ruby is ready and feeling more secure 😌

3 weeks ago we welcomed little old lady Dior into our home as a foster. Her health was deteriorating in kennels and she needed somewhere to feel safe.

In such a short time she well and truly stole my heart and today she’s taken a piece of it with her to her new forever home🥺

This poem reminds me why we should always consider fostering and how amazing every fosterer out there is!!♥️

A Foster Dog Poem
by Diane Morgan

I am the bridge
Between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.

I am made of mush,
Because my heart melted when I saw you,
Matted and sore, limping, depressed,
Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.

For one little time you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand
I will love you with my whole heart
I will make you whole.
I am made of steel.

Because when the time comes,
When you are well, and sleek,
When your eyes shine,
And your tail wags with joy
Then comes the hard part.

I will let you go -- not without a tear,
But without a regret.
For you are safe forever—
A new dog needs me now.

Sunday was a day for the duos ✌🏻

🐮🌸 Cow & Poppy demonstrated how far they’ve come over the past few weeks. We’ve added a little more to their training plan to help them grow in confidence both together and individually

🦖🎀 Rex & Lyla completed their 4 part puppy course with flying colours

🇬🇧🐻 Stanley & Albert have been working on their sensitive relationship in the home. We have a long road ahead but plenty of positive options to work through to help these boys out

Buddy you are such a brave boy!! Last night we took a leap and made a huge accomplishment in our training journey.

We wasn’t sure if it would be possible due to how reactive Buddy can be when people come into the home BUT WE DID IT 🥳

Buddy’s parents have been wanting the help from a dog walker for a while but haven’t been able to go forward due to his big feelings. We’ve now had two sessions with Ems Follow MyLead, putting in the time to build Buddy’s trust with Emma which is going well.

I still needed to know if Buddy could eventually accept someone coming into the home that wasn’t part of his family to take him out for a walk. I felt like I gained enough trust to try it out myself, so we went for it last night!!

We worked out the safest way possible and had a plan in place before I entered. We was all so extremely shocked as to how well Buddy handled the situation. All of our previous training helped to keep him calm and in no time he let me pop on his walking equipment and we was out the door enjoying a walk🥹

Lazy Sundays are currently a thing of the past for me over the next couple of months!!

The new year is always a busy period in the dog training world, much like the gym (guilty of that one myself!🫣)

I’m currently unable to take on anymore clients in the Bicester area so have set up a short waiting list.

I have ONE space available in the MK area for a client who can attend training during week days and in day time hours only.

Here’s some snippets from yesterdays shenanigans 📸

There’s nothing better than starting a training journey with guardians who have a complete open mind and are willing to accept change.

Change has to happen in order for progression to take place, with out it we would be stuck exactly where we left off.

Change can be scary, inconvenient and challenging, especially if you’ve been used to the same routine for years.

It’s not about instantly flipping everyone’s world upside down, but instead making small, impactful changes along the way.

Cassie, Denzil and Derek are 3 superb Chihuahuas who are going to be experiencing small amounts of change over the next few weeks, mainly revolving around food. How much we feed, how we feed and when we feed. This is to help build motivational reinforcers when training outside of the home.

Even by the end of our session after implementing some of these tiny changes, each dog was eager to work for a small piece of food which has never happened before. It was wonderful to see the trio become so motivated 🤗

If you couldn’t tell they’re all waiting for another reward from their humans hand!

January is set to be a month full of dynamic Duos!!

Rex and Lyla are the youngest pair in my team at the moment, navigating their way through the 4 part 1:1 puppy course together. Both pups are extremely intelligent and motivated, which can mean double the trouble but most importantly … double the triumphs 🏆 💛

Poppy and Cow are two fabulous cockapoo sisters who have an incredible bond. They have been joint at the hip since birth, making them inseparable. Where ever one goes, the other isn’t far behind 🐮🌸

Like some relationships, when we have such a strong bond, mixed with insecurity and anxiety, it’s easy to become dependable on that being. No one else matches and no one can come between.

The main concerns Poppy and Cow’s guardians have are their reactivity along with lead pulling. Instead of diving head first into basic training as a pair, we made a start on building their confidence separately, growing a sense of independence outside of the home.

They had a fulfilling individual walk each, both working on different difficulties and areas at a time. As although both similar, Cow can sometimes shut down on her own and Poppy is a more vocal puller.

After they both enjoyed their separate walks we headed out as a group, putting some of our training to work. Occasionally we created space between the two along with enjoying each others company close up again.

Luckily my day wasn’t too disrupted by the horrendous weather, meaning I still got to see these gorgeous faces today!!💙

✨ Gizmo has been working his socks off with his training over the past month but sadly had a little set back after the scary fire works on NYE. We soon got him back on track today and quickly saw all of the pieces his guardians have worked so hard on falling back into place

✨ Little Rex & Lyla had their first puppy session, I could’ve easily popped one in each pocket and taken them home with me but I resisted!! Communication was a big focus, along with learning calmness and teaching them that it’s perfectly okay to share...typical siblings 🤣

I couldn’t let Christmas pass with out uploading one of my favourite festive pics from December!

Guy played a cheeky game of hide & seek when home time came around after a fun weekend and chose to blend in with my ever so tasteful Christmas decorations 🤣

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR ALL OF YOUR ENDLESS SUPPORT THIS YEAR, AS ALWAYS IM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL ♥️

A little bit of a different post today, as you can see there’s no dogs in the photo below (now don’t be rude!) 🫣

I love what I do, deeply, but it can get emotionally draining at times. I adore my clients and can honestly say some feel like true friends but it can still get lonely out there.

A couple of years ago my path crossed with Caz, who is now a wonderful dog trainer based in Kidlington.

It’s such a privilege be able to express how you’re feeling to someone who just totally gets it, with not one ounce of judgment and to have someone to share ideas back and forth with. For once, sharing our burdens between each other, as the nature of our work is to literally take on other peoples problems…adorable, furry problems 🤣

The dog training world can be full of judgment and criticism, as emotions often run so high. To have someone be able to reassure you that you’re not going crazy is a blessing and a much needed breath of fresh air 🫶🏻

Flash is preparing for the Christmas chaos well in advance 🥂🎄

With lots of gatherings happening at this time of year it’s important that your dog has a safe haven to retreat to if needed.

Flash is a BIG cuddle bug but isn’t the biggest fan of unfamiliar people and struggles to find his ‘off switch’. He’s been learning to get cosy in his safe crate during the evenings whilst slowly extending the time with the door closed.

He’s been doing so well his mum got him a luxurious new bed for his crate. Get yourselves down to Aldi guys, how amazing is that dog bed!!😍

How often should my puppy greet other dogs??

We often hear different pieces of advice from dog lovers on how to best socialise a puppy around other dogs. Although they’re just trying to help, some of this advice can do more harm than good, such as …

🫣”You must let them meet as many dogs as possible every day”

😣”They must be off lead”

😬”Go to the biggest puppy groups as possible”

🫠”If they scrap they’ll sort it out between themselves, they’re asserting dominance”

If you follow this advice to the fullest, it’s more than likely you will raise a young dog that is hyper obsessed with dogs and has very little respect for other dogs boundaries. Instead try to…

🤗 Give your puppy the opportunity to meet a new dog a couple of times a week, if they are a good match

🧐 Be selective, you want them to influence your puppies behaviour and help teach them how to play respectfully

😌 Calm adult dogs are ideal

🥳 Vary the size, s*x and breeds you meet over time

🐷 Keep in mind flat face dogs can sometimes be a little confusing to puppies, so make these extra positive encounters and reassure them they mean no harm

😁 Your puppy can go off lead with dogs for short periods where the play flows naturally and they seem in sync. Look out for lots of mirroring and give them plenty of breaks

REMEMBER : Dog greets are a very small part of over all socialisation

Ended last week on a high with Buddy the springador! It’s safe to say the Buddy that greeted me into his home this time round was a world away from the first time I met Buddy just over a week ago 🌎

He gained security from our specific routine put in place, grew confidence from his handlers and found comfort in familiarity.

I could talk, move, express my words with my hands and observe Buddy with out him feeling utter fear and panic which was becoming unmanageable.

I had to initially take a different approach with Buddy’s training and verbally guide his guardians through out, as I was unable to interact with him myself which doesn’t happen often. Needless to say they’ve done a fantastic job, it’s never easy following verbal instructions alone with out a demo first. Brilliant work from everyone in the household 👏🏻

Wowza Bailey, we are very proud of you!! At such a young age you are already excelling in so many different areas💛

✨ Acing calm lead walking
✨ Toileting on walks (for the 1st time tonight!)
✨ Nailing sits and stays inside and out
✨ Gradually braving new and busier environments
✨ Remaining neutral by high volumes of traffic

Tonight we worked on observing passers by and resisting the urge to dive over to say hello. Difficult when you’re SO cute and everyone wants to cuddle you!

🪣 BUCKET GAME 🪣

Lola’s mum decided to have a little refresher of the ‘Bucket game’ recently and sent me a great video which I’ve shortened down.

This cooperative care method is designed to mainly help keep dogs settled during husbandry tasks such as vet visits, grooming or administering treatments💉

The dog is able to feel more in control as they can say “I’m fine carry on” 🟢 or “please stop now” 🔴 with out the need for extreme behaviours such as growling or snapping. The dog being handled just needs to simply look away from the bucket/cup for us to stop touching or look at it again for us to continue.

Once Lola mastered this first part of her training we introduced a soft brush to parts of her body she was comfortable with, moving on to the dreaded area…her paws!

I couldn’t resist uploading the last part of the video where excitement got the best of Lola 🤣

At some point, in almost every behavioural case, a caregiver will compare their dog to another dog in someway or another.

The envious and intrusive thoughts are only natural when you see a desirable trait or skill that you long for your dog to have. No judgment, I totally get it, but perhaps take a moment to consider the fact that you never truly know what happens behind closed doors.

That dog with with outstanding recall could have severe separation anxiety. That dog walking loosely on the lead could show fear aggression towards strangers. The dog that’s playing with other dogs in the park could resource guard and not seek affection from family members.

We all have areas that we strive to work on with our dogs (professionals and all!) So on those tough days just remember the positive qualities your unique dog shows and embrace them to the fullest 🤗

Three years ago today I officially set up Saving Grace Dog Training 🥳

The time has FLOWN by but in the same sense it feels like waaaaay longer!! Blood, sweat and tears (both happy and not so happy) have been shed over the years but it’s always worth it when I get to make a difference in families and their dogs lives.

Here’s to many more years dog training and to all of my amazing clients, past, present and future 🥂 🐾

We had so much fun during Margot’s behavioural training at the Bicester garden centre on Monday🪴

Lots of varied exposure to different people and we even got a member of the public involved to help with her training, as she has a particular disliking to tall men with scary beards! There was always lots of safe space around us for Margot to observe comfortably on her own terms.

She was a superstar so of course her mum treated her to a new toy from the pet shop on our way out 🧸

06/11/2023

Touch ✋🏻 has become an invaluable cue we taught Darcy during her puppy course almost 2 years ago!

She LOVES nothing more than diving head first into bushes and getting carried away following scents.

‘Touch!’ brings her right back to her handlers side with in a matter of seconds. This means she is still trusted to have fun and live her best Dora the explorer life 🎒

Please excuse my comfy clothes, I took this video whilst pet sitting Darcy and her lovely cockapoo sister Trixie recently, got to be warm and comfy on winter walks 🥶

✨ FULFILMENT ✨

One of the most important elements when looking to train or improve your dogs behaviour and wellbeing.

Is your dog satisfied? Are their natural needs being met? Are they a ‘good tired’ after their walk or just physically exhausted from stress?

These are all of the questions we discussed during Bruno’s initial assessment last week and most importantly came up with a plan of how we can meet his needs even more…

🪢 We changed his walking equipment
🌲 Found better suited places to walk him
🏃 Gave him more freedom
⏰ Altered the length & frequency of his walks
👀 Allowed him to observe his surroundings
🧸 Introduced sensible ragging games
🏥 Identified some lameness which will be checked out by a vet

The video below was sent to me by Bruno’s guardian, using the long line for the first time in one of his new walking areas. Great to see him sniffing and feeling so chillaxed😌

Big welcome to little Honey Bee who joined the Saving Grace team yesterday 🐝💛

For such a young dog she’s sadly experienced a lot of turmoil in her life already, so understandably her stress levels are sky high! We got to work on calmness, communication and focus with in the home.

Honey’s mum made a start on her homework that evening and had great success working with her around their cat which has been a challenge over the past couple of weeks. Good job Honey Bee 👏🏻

Wow! We didn’t expect these DNA results for Olive😯

Knowing specifically what breed Olive is or any dog in general when training isn’t the be all and end all. I always reiterate that we must work with the dog we have in-front of us today. Although I still stand by this, genetics do play a large part in your dogs being so can be extremely handy to know.

The predominant breeds initially shocked me but looking back they explain A-LOT about the traits we see in Olive.

🐕 How she interacts with dogs
🎾 Go to play styles
📚 Preferred learning methods
💗 Particular motivations and desires
🧀 Let’s not forget the picky eating…the girl knows what she wants

Super interesting results which can help guide us and boost her on going training!

Knowing the small amount of what my soul dog endured for many years makes this piece all the more special. I know it will touch many dog lovers hearts ♥️

“Here in this house...

I will never know the loneliness I hear in the barks of the other dogs 'out there'.
I can sleep soundly, assured that when I wake my world will not have changed.
I will never know hunger, or the fear of not knowing if I'll eat.
I will not shiver in the cold, or grow weary from the heat.
I will feel the sun's heat, and the rain's coolness,
and be allowed to smell all that can reach my nose.
My fur will shine, and never be dirty or matted.

Here in this house...

There will be an effort to communicate with me on my level.
I will be talked to and, even if I don't understand,
I can enjoy the warmth of the words.
I will be given a name so that I may know who I am among many.
My name will be used in joy, and I will love the sound of it!

Here in this house...

I will never be a substitute for anything I am not.
I will never be used to improve peoples' images of themselves.
I will be loved because I am who I am, not someone's idea of who I should be.
I will never suffer for someone's anger, impatience, or stupidity.
I will be taught all the things I need to know to be loved by all.
If I do not learn my lessons well, they will look to my teacher for blame.

Here in this house...

I can trust arms that hold, hands that touch...
knowing that, no matter what they do, they do it for the good of me.
If I am ill, I will be doctored.
If scared, I will be calmed.
If sad, I will be cheered.
No matter what I look like, I will be considered beautiful and thought to be of value.
I will never be cast out because I am too old, too ill, too unruly, or not cute enough.
My life is a responsibility, and not an afterthought.
I will learn that humans can almost, sometimes, be as kind and as fair as dogs.

Here in this house...

I will belong.
I will be home."

The video of Flash below is a common learnt behaviour that occurs in many of our homes when the post man delivers letters✉️ 📦

This is stressful for both dog and owner so during our most recent session we started to introduce the ‘counting game’ inside of the house.

This is designed to help positively teach Flash to drop and come away from the high value item, whilst also teaching him to feel comfortable enough to allow us to pick up the item from the floor, as he calmly watches.

We stayed clear of playing the well known chase game or prying the high value item from his jaws. This only adds value, breaks trust and makes matters worse. If you seem to want it so bad then surely your dog is going to protect it even more right?!

Repetition is SO important with this technique, making sure they fully understand what the counting means, working with lower value objects first that they desire but most importantly mean nothing to you.

I currently don’t have a video of Flash showing off his counting work but his mum gave me an update to say that it has successfully worked with a parcel yesterday! Good job Flash 😁

I will make sure to get an informative video uploaded soon of counting work!

🎃 Spooky season is upon us 🎃

Newbie Margo would like to show her face and remind everyone of some helpful tips this Halloween to keep your dogs safe and to make sure the scary stuff is left to the humans👻

🧛🏻 Costume Practise: If you plan to dress up your dog, start practising with the costume well in advance. Stick to short sessions and make sure it doesn't restrict their movement. If they’re worried by the costume possibly choose a funky Halloween print collar or harness instead.

🚪Training Refresher: Before the big night, refresh your dog's cues such as “sit," "stay," and "leave it." These can help keep them safe during festivities. If your dog struggles to follow these cues, a baby gate could be good management.

🦮 Leash up outside at all times and make sure your pooch is comfortable around other dogs, strangers, children and loud noises if you plan to take them trick or treating.

🌟 ID and Microchip: In case your dog manages to slip away during the Halloween chaos, make sure they have proper identification tags and a microchip with up-to-date information.

🍭 Candy Caution: Keep Halloween sweets, especially chocolate and sweets containing xylitol, out of your dog's reach. These can be toxic to dogs.

🏡 Safe Space: Create a quiet, cosy spot for your dog to relax away from the Halloween hustle if they seem frightened.

Most importantly have a spooktacular time together!
