What information is kept on a microchip?

The microchip only contains one piece of information: your pet's unique identification number. This number is linked to a microchip registry or database, which stores a range of information, including:

📁Your name (the owner)
🏠Your home address
☎️Contact details (Phone number and email address)
🔢Pet's ID number
🐶Pet's name, gender and date of birth
🐱Their breed/their fur colour and if they have any identifiable markings

It's essential to keep this information up-to-date, for example, if you move house or change your phone number or email address. Failure to update your information could prevent someone from reuniting you with your pet if they become lost.

📁All of this information is stored within a government-approved database and can be used to identify and reunite you with your pet if they go missing.

❔Did you know it is now a legal requirement for your cat to be microchipped❔

The new Government rules now mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks, and owners contact details should be stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database.
All owners must have their cat microchipped by 10th June 2024, and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted.

❔What is a microchip❔

A microchip is a tiny device, about the size of a grain of rice, that is placed under the skin at the back of the neck. It's a quick, simple, and relatively painless procedure, and once the microchip is in place, it won't bother your pet.

Each microchip has a unique number stored in a database corresponding to the owner's details. So, if your pet gets lost or is stolen, scanning their microchip can help reunite you quickly.

Only one month to go❗️ From 10 June 2024, cats in England will need to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old.

🧑‍⚕️ Be sure to contact your vet to book in an appointment.

Microchipping will help reunite you with your cat if they ever become lost. Even indoor-only cats should be microchipped because they are also at risk of becoming lost.

Owners could face a fine of up to £500 if they do not microchip their cat by the required deadline.

We are currently going through our address book and are looking to update our volunteer list to transport sick and injured wildlife to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital. They're an amazing specialist wildlife hospital located in Haddenham near Thame, but unfortunately we are usually not in a position to be able to transport animals there ourselves.

If you would like to be on our list to be contacted please email your name and contact details to [email protected].

This afternoon we had a stray cat handed into us by a member of the public. The poor boy is in a bit of a bad way, and is currently receiving treatment.
He was found on camp road in Upper Heyford, unfortunately he is not microchipped and does not have a collar.
He is a neutered tabby and due to his current condition hard to say what age he is, however we believe he is 10+ years.
For further information please contact the practice on 01869 323223.

It’s the 1st of May, which means it’s the start of Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month 2024!

This year, our theme is ‘Progression’, and we aim to highlight the diverse range of skills, abilities and career pathways of veterinary nurses. We’ll also be raising awareness amongst the public about why protecting the ‘veterinary nurse’ title is so crucial.

In 2024, we celebrate 20 years since the campaign began, from its early beginnings as Veterinary Nursing Awareness Day from 2004, and since 2012 we’ve been campaigning for the whole month.

Visit our website for more information on how you can get involved this year; https://bvna.org.uk/blog/your-vnam2024-your-way/

💚 How will you be raising awareness of veterinary nursing this month? Let us know in the comments below! 💬

Handling Rabbits…

Rabbits are a prey species and feel most comfortable on the ground. In the wild the only time they would be picked up would be if they were about to become a predator’s dinner so we can forgive them for being uncomfortable with it - poor buns.

So when we need to examine their bottoms, cut nails, groom, give medicines or tend to any injuries, it’s important we handle rabbits in a way that won’t frighten or injure them. This means…

❌ No scruffing, No Trancing & NEVER lift them by their ears ❌

There is tons of information on how to correctly handle buns in our care booklet.
