We have had more followers and likes recently so I thought I would repost this as so many people use a ball all for the wrong reasons

Students who train with me know can use balls in training for close work but i dislike ball throwers so I thought I put this to you all
What are the dangers of dog ball throwers?

You chuck the ball off into the far distance. The dog hares off after it, races back and drops it at your feet. You scoop up the ball and fling it away again. Rinse and repeat.

What could be easier?

A ball flinger can throw a tennis ball up to 140 feet – around two or three times further than the average non-bionic human can manage.

However, there’s a growing sense of unease about the dangers of ball throwers for dogs. Sure, they make it ridiculously easy for your dog to clock up their daily exercise quota. But are they actually good for your furry best friend?.......

Turning a stroll into a high-intensity workout
If you watch your dog out on their everyday walk, they’ll be stopping to sniff interesting bits of grass, meandering around, and generally bumbling along and enjoying the company, the fresh air and the environment.

When we repeatedly fling a high-speed ball for them to catch, we’re transforming that pleasant amble into a continuous HIIT session.

Obsessed with balls
The problem is that dogs just love chasing balls. It feeds into their ancient instinctive drive to hunt down small animals. And although you regularly give them delicious food and they don’t have to catch their own dinner any more, something of that instinct remains. So when they see a ball, an ancient part of their brain thinks “Rabbit!” and they speed off to track it down, hyped up on the thrill of the chase.

Wear on your dog’s joints
When your dog repeatedly dashes after a ball, they’re racing from a standing start to 100mph, screeching to a halt and often jumping up in the air too. This can put an extra strain on your pup’s joints, muscles and cartilage.

Interestingly, braking can cause the most potential damage, as this is the moment when your dog’s weight is flung forward onto their shoulders.

The burden on the joints is increased if your dog is tearing up and down hills, or is running on a sandy beach, which takes much more effort than running on grass or a woodland path.

And because your dog is excited about chasing after a rabbit disguised as a ball, that enthusiasm can easily lead to them over-riding any warning signals their body is giving them to slow down.

The result? Wear and tear on your dog’s joints that can lead to stiffness and stop them from enjoying their life to the full as well as other health issues along with possible choking and getting stuck into your dogs throat.

You want to treat your pups with a festive pupcakes
This recipe makes roughly six pupcakes

Once baked, these treats can be frozen before you add the 'snowy' topping.

Ingredients:
1 ripe banana
75 g peanut butter (xylitol-free)
1 egg
35g honey
50 g wholemeal flour
35g rolled oats
60ml water

For the snowy topping (optional)
One tsp of Greek yogurt per pupcake

Method:
Preheat your oven to 180°C/ 160°C Fan/ gas 4
Mash the banana.
Mix in the peanut butter, egg and honey.
Add in the dry ingredients (flour, oats and baking powder) and stir until thoroughly combined.
Mix in the water, adding a splash at a time.
Divide the mix between six cupcake cases, and place in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Leave to cool thoroughly and remove the pupcakes from their cases.
Coat the top of each pupcake with a teaspoon of Greek yogurt and a bit of mint

Christmas tree tips to save it from your furry friend

🎄Invest in a quality stand or make sure you secure the base of your tree well

🎄Maybe place a baby gate, a fire guard or a puppy pen around the tree

🎄 When decorating place your pup in a different room and bring in once the ball balls and branches aren't moving around and makeing it fun for them

🎄When decorating use boundary or placements mates so can watch what you are doing

🎄 Enrich your 4 legged friends with snuffle Matts, kongs ,lick matts ect to to help settle and make it less fun for them.

Be aware or any additional cable lying around the floor for lights and other decorations

Always turn off at socket when you go out and don’t leave your dog unattended with the tree! 😊

Take. From a friends post but so very true
Sharing this to raise awareness . Most of you on my friends list can see from a mile off how this bite escalated (as this dog is a pure gem gives clear warnings / multiple warnings and a careful warning bite) .

Lots do not ! you might get only one of these warnings especially if they’ve been ignored or punished in the past .

Dog bites at Christmas are so common as dogs are subjected to different challenges and children they do not know entering their lives without any warning.

This isn’t to teach your children or your dogs this is 1000% the adults responsibility to learn .
If you are NOT sure then shut the dog
Away . They are much safer snoozing in their car than dying because they felt afraid and bit someone …..

I have had a few people ask if I'll am and will still help and train XL bullies and the answer is YES.
lots of trailers around here are not wanting and refusing to train this breed / mastiff breeds this breed is being banned all for the wrong reason and people need to look more into the breeders and how they are raised rarther than the breed them selves (or in a minute owning a dog will be banned 😅)
The breeds need more help than ever ATM and I'm willing to help them because our government doesn't know what they are doing once again
These days it's a privilege to own a dog and people need to take more responsibility owning them and there are more than ever sacure dog fields to higher and keeping dogs safe and a simple thing like leads and training can make all the difference and as these issues are only going to be passed on to different breeds and get worse

This is the statement from the gov website:

New laws banning XL Bully type dogs have been laid in Parliament today, as the Government adds the breed to the list of dogs banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Under the new rules, which come into force at the end of the year, it will be illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL Bully dogs to stray in England and Wales.

From this date, these dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. Owners of XL Bully dogs are recommended to start training their dog to wear a muzzle and to walk on a lead ahead of the legal restrictions coming into force.

From 1 February 2024 , it will then become illegal to own an XL Bully dog if it is not registered on the Index of Exempted Dogs. By staggering these two dates, current owners of this breed will have time to prepare for these new rules.

Owners who wish to keep their dogs will have until the end of January to register them and will be forced to comply with strict requirements. As well as being muzzled and kept on a lead in public, these dogs must also be microchipped and neutered.

Dogs under one year when the ban comes in must be neutered by the end of the year, older dogs must be neutered by the end of June.

From 1 February, owners without a Certificate of Exemption face a criminal record and an unlimited fine if they are found to be in possession of an XL Bully type, and their dog could be seized

As it's getting close to firework time please think about your pets and make sure they are secure indoors as well as when going out to the loo putting them on lead as you would be surprised what a dog can do if scared

This is just bit of advice but if living around Bideford area and have a dog walker please check yr dog walker has insurance and no what they are doing. Today at melbery woods a dog ran out of the woods and almost got hit by a few cars
it was a dog walker walking them it had no collar on and no control
If use a dog walker please make sure u have collars with your details (this is law forming they leave yr premise) or the dog walker should be putting a collar with their details on for the walk..
It's safer for them to be walked on lead in groups as they are not the owner so behaviour can change once away from u

Treat dog walkers like trainers ask questions and instructions on how u want them to work for u
make sure got insurance and the big key is make sure you dog is happy to be around them
Thanks

This is to all breeds and not just XL bullies

It's another hot one today and it's still scary how many people are walking the dogs midday

Keeping their brain busy is just as good and sometimes better then waking them
Here are a few things u can do to keep them busy and safe at home

Kongs
A filled Kong can help deter boredom and prevent bad behaviors in that it gives your dog something to focus on and be stimulated by. It provides a reward. (We always like to reward good behavior!) Additionally, it allows your dog to forage and chew, which are natural behaviors for canines

Lick Mats
They alleviate stress, create mental stimulation for dogs if their exercise is limited or if physical exercise doesn’t always tire them out, they encourage healthy teeth and gums and can be useful to reinforce activities like grooming,

Snuffle Matt
Provide mental stimulation.
Prevent speedy eating.
Reduce begging.
Burn energy.
Keep your dog entertained.
Help curb separation anxiety.
Reduce stress.
Stimulate their sense of smell.

Just a reminder that the weather is warm currently yr dogs won't die if they don't get Walked
I'm a big believer no routine is the best routine for yr 4 legged friends so mixing their times up for walking is never a bad thing

Please keep an eye out for signs
Dogs are getting more of a bad name when it comes to the new breeds and kids
dogs show so many signs that they are not happy in a situation where we don't read them correctly

Once again, so you're all clear - one tin of tuna = 3 donuts!

These posters are actually really handy - if you see them on the walls of your local vets, you know to run.
