✨️ Success Story Saturday ✨️

Last year we camped out in a park all night in Edinburgh to catch some dumped baby mini rexes. You will remember our delight when we managed to capture little Birken, who quickly became a favourite of our volunteers.

Fast forward a year and he now lives with his two buddies - fellow mini rex boys, Super Bun and Brew Bun. They had sadly lost their brother and were missing having a bro at the bottom. Birken filled that gap as the new baby brother and absolutely adores his new family. You know how much we love boy trios!

They now live away in England but we get spoiled with lovely updates. 😍 Nothing makes us happier than seeing his wee face squished between his brothers and learning how to bunny. He's even found new confidence to explore the garden! 🙌

🧸 MEET BUNNELBY 🧸

You would have a hard time believing the age of this sweet tiny tot! Not quite ready to sleep the day away, he is active and playful once he settles in and feels safe.

Bunnelby is a shy boy initially with people but once he knows you, you'll be nudged and feel his tickly whiskers. He loves exploring when your back is turned and he loves his toys. His favourite place to sleep is his doll bed, next to his teddy.

He is a gentle little soul and won't put up any fuss on his spa days, happy to be brushed and trimmed. He is much happier when his coat is short and having his hair away from his eyes. Free grooming for life is a promise from BBBB for this wee fluff ball.

Bunnelby has always lived with other rabbits and has sadly lost all of his companions. He is very much a bottom bun and seeks to please. He loves following other buns and is very much a rabbits rabbit! He will be a dream to bond again as he is grieving and absolutely desperate for company. He is a perfect candidate to add to an established pair or group and we would like him not to be left alone again at his age.

The babies have moved out! 🥲

Now 8 weeks old and going through a little growth spurt, they were truly ready to leave their mamma and the nest and find their feet. ⛰️

They're enjoying their lodge and haven't sat still for more than a nano second. Bunro waved them off and has been enjoying some peace and quiet already, flopping in the sunshine. 🌞

Keep following their journey as we document it on our Instagram stories each week and watch them grow up. As they move into their next stage of life, we love to teach about what it's like raising youngsters and how complex they are! 🐇🐇🐇🐇

That's Princess Blitzle hopped off to her foster home to stay until she gets adopted. 😍 We will miss her but she is off to serve therapy duties and be spoiled which she will love. 🩷

We firmly believe Blitzle would be kept as a single bun if she was at another rescue. Likely advertised as an "unbondable" or "single house bun".

She is incredibly attached to humans and will melt like putty in your hands, trusting you with everything including her soul. She wouldn't even nip you if you promised her 1000 treats to do so. She would lick you to death instead.

But with other rabbits she goes from angelic to demon, going straight for the jugular. In an intense and over the top reaction, which you would have to see to believe.

Is Blitzle bonded to humans? Does she just prefer humans to rabbits? Does she just want to live on her own?

No. No. No.

Blitzle clearly has some trauma from previous experiences with other rabbit/s. She very much assumes they are coming to get her, so she will act quickly and efficiently to ensure she gets them first. This doesn't mean she doesn't want to be loved or listened to, it just means she's been hurt before.

Lucky for Blitzle, we don't shy away from behavioural issues and we love being challenged. Blitzle has gone through lots of assessments at the rescue and we know just the type of bun companion who will be best for her. The process to bond her won't be quick or easy, but it will be done here by our Behaviourist who will work with them as long as it takes.

Adoption applications are being considered carefully for Blitzle and while lots of people want her because she's cute and cuddly, we will be carefully selecting which rabbit is the best possible friend for her. A condition of her adoption will also be that the bonding must be done here, to ensure success and no further negative experiences for Blitzle or the other rabbit.

Whoever gets this little lady will be incredibly lucky, and we can't wait to see her finally learn how wonderful being bonded to another rabbit is. 🥰

⚽️ MEET BRAKES ⚽️

Our loving lad, Brakes is our first senior to get in the spotlight. ✨️

He's been let down by humans more times than we can count, and we have been searching now for 9 months for the right home for him.

Brakes is a gentle, loving and affectionate boy who loves nothing more than hunkering down for snuggles and will always be there at the door waiting for you to say hello to him.

He is very calm and confident and not easily phased. He enjoys being both indoors and outdoors and gets along with everyone and anyone. While he may be 8 years old, he still has plenty of sparkle and is in very good health for his age.

Brakes has had many husbuns and bunwives in his time and would make a great partner for a fellow senior bun or as a companion for a pair or group who would like to be nurtured. Brakes is a team player with his companions and still has a lot of leadership and social skills. He likes to provide confidence and guide other rabbits in a kind and loving way. Other rabbits tend to look up to him and follow him, appreciating his calm directive manner and tolerant, gentle spirit.

NB: He has lived with EC so needs to go to an EC exposed home.

Brothers and sons of Bunro, Ben Nevis and Braeriach are polar opposites both in looks and personality and it's amazing watching them both develop their own characters. ⛰️🗻

🤎 Ben Nevis was very easy to bond with initially, as he is a loving rabbity baby very self assured and calm. He doesn't mind you cleaning his space, he likes you to give him an activity and leave him to get on with it.

He is bigger, more muscular and is very intune with his environment. While he still has his soft baby coat, he's quite mature and very book smart. He is confident, outgoing and loves to explore, binky and play with toys. He will put his paws on strangers laps and hop up onto them for a treat, but likes to make his own decisions and be in control. He is extremely nosy and wants to know what's going on. We can see he is going to be quite the bun when he grows up!

🤍 Braeriach arrived very shaken, nervous and worried, a skinny little rake with no muscle. His relationship with us has been a rollercoaster, we've been irritated by him, frustrated, annoyed and now we don't want to be away from him.

He's a skinny gangly teenager, all limbs and no finese. He hates you cleaning and disturbing his space, he's ridiculously insecure and is forever watching his back. But he's super spirited, never gives up, and while not clever he is very street smart. He is now the first to race to you and ask to be picked up. He will cuddle on you for ages, falling asleep so long as you're stroking him and telling him everything will be OK and when he is scared he will oddly run towards you and into your arms. He is everyone's annoying baby brother, scrambling over everything, legs akimbo. He gets told off a lot but usually needs it, because he's annoying. We love this little boy a ridiculous amount and he just needs mothered as he grows up.

Both boys are now ready to find forever homes (seperately as singles!) and we would love them to have a home this young where they can continue to grow up with their own rabbit companions each.

It's an amazing opportunity to adopt such a young bun who is ready with all the foundations laid for you and have them their entire life. 🩷🩷

When is having a single rabbit living next to another rabbit suitable?
* Grieving - a grieving rabbit may find comfort short term in the lead up to bonding by having a new companion next to them until you have time for bonding them.
* Assessing behaviour - observing behaviour in a single rabbit.
* Improving hay consumption - having a competitor next to them can increase hay consumption which can be helpful in a rescue setting.

When is it NOT suitable?
* When you have bonded rabbits - placing a new single rabbit next to bonded rabbits (whether a pair/trio/group) is a trigger for fighting in bonded rabbits and should just never be done.
* Rabbits who have defense aggression or are fearful of other rabbits due to negative experiences - this only increases their tension and can cause repeated GI stasis episodes.
* Long term - having two single rabbits living next to one another long term causes tension to build and is not a substitute for actually bonding rabbits. It is not a quality of life for a rabbit to live their life next to but not able to receive comfort or communicate with the other rabbit. It can also lead to defensive behaviours and aggression.

In the case of our super submissive little golden oldies, Bastiodon and Bunnelby - having them next to one another at the rescue is currently beneficial for both of them. For Bastiodon, he has never met another rabbit and this has aided his post neutering recovery. And for Bunnelby who is grieving badly, he has perked up, become more animated and started eating hay now he has fellow oldie next to him.

It's no substitute for them being bonded however, so get ready for our golden oldie appeal starting tomorrow -

⚠️ TOXIC TREATS & TOYS ⚠️

Understanding the basics of rabbit care include knowing what things are extremely harmful or toxic to your rabbits. Sadly this includes what is sold in the shops labelled for "rabbits".

These 3 items some of the MOST harmful products still sold labelled for rabbits (mainly because rabbits are grouped in the "small furry" category when they have very different digestive needs to other small mammals):
🌽 CORN - whole dried corn cannot be digested by rabbits and can cause a blockage. Corn should not be part of your rabbits diet, but particularly dried corn which is the most harmful.
🪵 GNAW BLOCKS - these colourful gnaw blocks/shapes sold are made from compressed wood shavings and flavoured to make appealing to chew on. Sadly these expand in the gut causing fatal impactions. Stick to natural chews instead, far safer!
🪨 SALT/MINERAL LICKS/STONES - causing dehydration which in turn causes GI stasis in addition to adding stress on the kidneys. As a species prone to bladder stones and calcium sludge, these are a recipe for disaster.

Learn more about biologically appropriate toys, treats and supplements on our website under the "rabbit care" section. Throw any of these toxic items away and do not give them to your rabbits. 🚫

Little panda, Bastiodon is back from being successfully neutered today. 🐼

He may be 9 years old, but we believe neutering is vital for his quality of life in order to gain companionship of his own kind. We neuter senior rabbits when they are surrendered to the rescue, no matter how old they are. Now he is one step closer to a bunfriend, something he's waited his entire life for. 🤍🖤

We have 3 lovely senior rabbits for adoption, so if you have space in your heart and home for an oldie - get in touch!

I talk a lot about behavioural issues in rabbits, which I have categorised. You can learn more about them over on our Members Page. But what I don't talk about is, is there any correlation in domestic rabbits between s*x or breed and behavioural issue?

I've gone back through all of my case studies from the last 10 years to collate date and you may find this interesting!

The highest percentage of rabbits with hormonal issues were male mini lops. I've worked with my fair share of these randy little boys and they can be really difficult to manage in group situations.

The highest percentage of rabbits with severe reactivity were by far.... mini rexes. I have "psycho mini rex" as a tab in my email for a reason. Attacking when under stress and having elevated cortisol levels has been a consistent finding when working with mini rexes. Sadly they also find themselves often injured during bonding with other rabbits and can be hyper sensitive to touch.

What about resource guarding? Females were significantly more prone to resource guarding than males. No surprise there!

I'm currently working on some charts and graphs to better show the data and will publish this next month on the members page for all our bunny geeks. 🤓

They are starting to look like real rabbits in miniature now. Teallach is Bunro's mini me and Dorain is just like daddy, Ben Nevis. 🥲

Saturday is getting closer now, we will be climbing The Ben for them 💪 Keep growing big and strong little ones and we will support you every hop of the way. 🩷🩵

Working with complex behavioural cases is where my heart lies. Rabbits who have been unable to be bonded by anyone or have complex behavioural issues, my favourite!

These three stunning siblings came to BBBB as an external client asking for help. They had been unable to be bonded together and lived separately their entire life so far. A rescue had tried to bond them and been unsuccessful. What we love about bun parents like theirs is that they didn't give up, they sought specialist help and didn't accept the advice that they were "unable to live together".

The first step in all cases is to assess the temperaments of the rabbits and any underlying issues that have caused them to remain solo. Often when a few rabbits have repeated fights they are branded as "trying to be the boss", which in this trios case was what the rescue had said about the two sisters. Sibling relationships can go one of two ways in adulthood, and assessing whether there are any temperament clashes (aka sibling syndrome) is the first step.

In this trios case, we were bowled over at their amazing communication style and how well the 3 of them were able to communicate and understand one another. During assessments before bonding, it was clear that the brother was actually far higher in temperament than the sisters and would make a great alpha for them both. Neither sister wants to be boss at all!

Being misunderstood is a common dilemma that causes roadblocks during bondings, as the right approach to bonding involves knowing and understanding each rabbit you are working with. Are there any behavioural issues, any specific triggers?

Tsuro, Titch and Stella leave us a happy trio and their family have the support and understanding needed to work with them long term. That includes what type of layout will specifically work for this trio in the home, how to understand their communication and how to continue to strengthen their relationship. We know this trio are going to live a very happy life together from now on as they have been a dream to work with!

We waved our cheeky little chops Blesbok off this morning as he was whisked off in his bunny limo all the way to his new home in Kent, England. 💙

He's had quite the journey with us these last 5 months. From being found dumped, choosing his own name, knackered knees from hu***ng, hating trainers, loving cheek rubs, scampering around, refusing to jump or be a rabbit in any way shape or form.

Have a great time with your new bunny bestie ✨️🐇🐇 We hope she teaches you a thing or two!

We adopt out UK wide, the right bun for the right home. ✅️

🏅 LAST DAY TO SIGN UP 🏅

Why Ben Nevis? The arduous 5 mile trek up to the top of the mountain highlights just how much space your rabbits need.

Cages and hutches AREN'T good enough. So next weekend, to highlight the amount of space that rabbits should be in to meet the minimum welfare requirements, we are taking on this challenge of climbing the UK's tallest mountain.

The group will be undertaking this challenge, showing that there is no excuse to keep rabbits cooped up in small spaces. And to shout from the UKs highest point about rabbit welfare.

All the money we raise will help towards the recent welfare case we have taken in, who we are calling 'the Hoppy Hillwalkers'. A family of rabbits who have all been rescued from a life in a small hutch, inbreeding and in cramped conditions. These funds will go towards them getting the veterinary treatment they need and given the chance at a better life with their welfare needs fulfilled.

🌼 Success Story Saturday 🌼

Who remembers little Basam the unwanted xmas gift who was dumped to us in a crisp box?

Back in the Spring we matched him to his new friend and family and bonded them here at the rescue. Hogan his new giant bro might have been 3 times his size but we just knew he was the right one to befriend baby Basam.

4 months on and these boys are living their best bunny life free roaming and cuddling always together. They want to spread the message that bonding rabbits has NOTHING to do with size, age or gender and that rabbit social dynamics are much deeper than any of that. 🧡

So happy for you Basam, you are always happy and smiling now you have everything you dreamed for. ✨️

Meet our newest arrival, little old boy Bastiodon. 🐼

Left behind in a children's residential home, living in this cage and most often ignored. The standard of living he had as you can see, does not meet welfare guidelines. Concerned about his safety, wellbeing and welfare, we were contacted and asked if we could offer him a space with us.

Baby Blue Bee Bunnies as a welfare organisation does not support rabbits being kept in care homes, residential homes or schools/nurseries. These environments are not suitable in any way for rabbits as a species.

To understand the reasons why, please visit our website and the Scottish government legislation on rabbit welfare.

We've been running our One Hop Shop for 7 years now, under the hands of our amazing volunteer Richard (resident BBB bunny dad). 🌟

Things have changed a lot since we first opened, and now online shop options for bunny caregivers are abundant. Which is amazing!

In a bid to keep our One Hop Shop open, Richard has been training up some volunteers to help with it. Please bare with us as our newbies try to find their feet - they have big shoes to fill!

If you're a OHS customer, here's what you need to know:
🛍 Follow the OHS pages to keep up to date on restocks, new products and order info ( Instagram and Facebook 'babybluebeebunniesfundraising')
🛍 Our product selection is decreasing to a core range to make it easier to keep things in stock - we welcome your feedback on which items you want us to keep
🛍 Our USP is focused on why you can trust every single items is safe and suitable for rabbits but also 100% vegan and from ethical companies
🛍 Our forage is seasonal - we will add reminders for when we harvest select plants/branches to each listing so you know when in the year it will be available. Once it's sold, its gone until the following year so we suggest stocking up when it's available to feed over Winter.
🛍 Orders are shipped out twice per week and if no volunteer shows up for a shift that means the orders will not go out that day. If you're in a rush and need something asap you can always put a note on your order but we cannot promise to get it out to you the way Am@zon will. Try to shop in an organised and sustainable way by managing storage containers, knowing how quickly you use up feed etc
🛍 If you would like to click and collect, please ensure you give us at least 48 hours to make up your order. For those boarding with us, don't forget to use your boarding OHS discount if you want to shop while your buns board with us. Your order will be ready to collect at your check out appointment
🛍 Any issues with your orders, please contact Richard directly at [email protected] as he will still be the one managing all the admin associated with the OHS. Please do not DM social media volunteers as they will not be able to advise you.
