A flash of yellow 🤩

Every bunny parent in Scotland is waiting patiently for the fresh growth of dandelions. 🌼 With the heavy rains followed by warm sun this week, you can expect to see them popping up rapidly around you!

Leave the first dandelions for the bees 🐝 These are vital as their first food source out of hibernation. But after the bees, comes bunnies!

Beehive & Buzzy have been with us for 7 months now. 🩵🐝

In that time, Buzzy has been centre of attention as he had ear issues and has needed lots of attention, vet care, surgery and nursing. But we wanted to shine the spotlight on the amazing Beehive today, as she deserves her moment. 😇 🌟

Beehive is an incredible big bun, with a real air of authority about her. She gives off "don't mess with me" vibes, but while she wouldn't hurt a fly, she is very much the boss of everyone. She keeps not just Buzzy in check, but all of us too! When she first arrived she was antsy, chewy and didn't want much to do with us other than at food times.

She has accompanied Buzzy back and forward for countless vet visits, hospitalisation, and put up with 4 weeks of medical kenneling where she had her space and toys restricted. This is a lot for a bun with a high level of intelligence who loves her freedom and gets bored easily. Not once has she taken it out on Buzzy or been hard on him, instead caring for him, being extra gentle, nurturing and providing him with affection through it all. The worse he felt, the more she would care for him.

Despite being bored and frustrated, she never once nipped us, or tried to cause any type of chaos. Our bond with her grew as she started to seek us out for interaction in her own way, and with clicker training she learned how humans can be (almost) as wise as her. This kept her busy while she was waiting on Buzzy getting back on his feet, and she now looks forward to her "sweetie" game, hopping up onto her hide for her syringe of water when he gets his medicine. She is now first at the door waiting for you, pushing in with paws on your lap while Buzzy awaits head down for head rubs and kisses.

Her enthusiasm for puzzles, patience through Buzzy's journey and her incredible burst of binkies when she finally got back out to play has given us a real appreciation for what a special girl she is. ✨️

She's mellowed so much and we are immensely grateful to her as we don't think her little husbun would be where he is today without her. His queen by his side. 👑

✨️ The kindness of community ✨️

When the family from the local Deli handed us in a very full donation tin last week, it reminded us of the saying "One penny may seem to you a very insignificant thing, but it is the small seed from which fortunes spring."

Not only were this family the first people to welcome us all those years ago to this lovely little village, but by having our donation tin in their Deli they helped spread awareness of our cause and the work that we do.

With every penny and pound that people have put in, they have learned about our cause and supported it to continue. Thank you 🙏 From BBBB 🩵🐝🐇

Anyone with a business who would like to support us in this way, we have more tins ready and waiting for your reception desks, tills or checkouts.

In rescue it can be easy to look at the numbers right now and get worried. Right now costs are going up, and adoptions are going down. 💔

Last February we had our record number of adoptions in one month, and this year we've already seen a 78% drop in adoptions. This plus the costs soaring to run things has meant we have been able to take in and help less rabbits than we would like to.

This year we've already turned away rabbits who in previous years we would never have turned away, urgent cases. And other rescues in the country have taken to drastic action such as implementing euthanasia policies for any rabbit with dental issues.

Big organisations are closing branches to cut costs. Donations are at an all time low.

If things continue as they are, there's no doubt that rescues will all close for good in 2026.

We won't scare you with some other figures, like how we spent £170 just on bin bags to clean the bunnies. 😓🗑

⚠️Our latest welfare case is about to land us in another £3000 just to prep for adoption.⚠️

Do you love our content? Appreciate all our free educational content, Fun Fridays and Q&As?

We are walking 23 miles at the Glasgow Kiltwalk next month as a team to spread awareness and we will be bringing you along with us virtually. PLEASE can you sponsor us? 🙏🙏🙏🙏 We NEED to raise funds for these Whisky Bunnies or we CANNOT take in or save another rabbit. If all our followers donated £1 we would be able to cover all their medical bills and feed costs too.

🎈 Success Story Saturday 🎈

“I wanted to share my story as part of the Success Story Saturday. In 2019 we brought home an eight week old mini lop, Hobbs. He was our first rabbit and we loved him from the second we saw him. Being new to rabbits we were confused on just about everything to do with rabbit welfare with so much conflicting information everywhere we looked. We looked for a rescue to try and get some advice and guidance and we reached out to Baby Blue Bee Bunnies. From the first contact we felt instantly supported and a huge sense of relief when we read about their matching process and what we needed to do to get Hobbs ready for friends.

Being new bun parents we weren’t experienced with rabbits, we thought we needed rabbits the same breed and a female. Through the adoption application form and phone calls with Jeniveeve, we quickly realised this wasn’t the case at all. However I’d already fallen in love with a welfare case that they had taken in, The Balcony Bunnies. We were warned about the issues mini lops face, being an extreme breed, but felt terrible that we had shopped rather than adopted. If we could give another two mini lops a home (provided they were a suitable match), then that’s what we would do. We were fully prepared and committed to do whatever it took to give them as good a life as possible.

We were matched with two mini lops brothers from the ‘Balcony Bunnies’, Barberry & Buddlea. Jeniveeve did the initial bonding at the rescue and we continued with the plan at home. We absolutely adored our boy trio! They brightened up our life every day. Covid arrived but we relished every second of all the time we got to spend with them during the lockdowns. Hobbs was the ‘alpha’, he was absolutely excellent at delegating all the rabbit tasks and chores to his beta, Barberry. Buddlea was the cheeky wee bottom bunny and full of mischief. Barberry did an excellent job of keeping his little brother in check. Sadly Barberry passed away from a liver lobe torsion in August 2021. We were heartbroken, he was still so young and it seemed so unfair. Our adorable trio became an adorable duo! In September 2021 we adopted another bunny, Belvedere. He also had a bad start in life and after being diagnosed with a heart condition once at the rescue he was struggling to find a home, despite his huge character and loveable antics. We’d first met Belvedere earlier that year and fell in love with him, who wouldn’t! He was a good match for our boys and after careful consideration we decided to make him part of the family.

He came to live in our spare room and they went off for bonding over Christmas. Our new trio was very different from the original trio but just as adorable and just as much fun. We missed Barberry a great deal but Belvedere with his need for affection and cuddles and his funky hair brought our smiles back.

Baby Blue Bee Bunnies have been fantastic, they love every bunny that come through their doors and continue to love them even after they’ve been adopted, even our Hobbs has become part of their extended family, with his BBBB name being Bobbs! Hobbs and Buddlea are now 6 and Belvedere will be 7 this year. They have their fair share of health problems but nothing we weren’t prepared for thanks to BBBB. Their kindness, support and advice these last (nearly 6 years) have contributed so much in terms of the boys being able to live their best lives. We are incredibly grateful to them and always will be. Louise & family”

No this is not a joke. People ACTUALLY buy their kids rabbits at Easter.

Why shouldn't they?
Because the vast majority of them will not stay to the end of the year in that home. They will be abandoned, sold or given up in their first year.

Why?
⛔ Rabbits often scare children with their behaviour - rabbits will nip, kick and scratch - all normal behaviours
⛔ Rabbits are not good animals for allergy sufferers due to the hay they need, many people realise this after they bring them home
⛔ Rabbits reach puberty and begin spraying urine, become aggressive and fight - people then do not want to pay hundreds to have them neutered
⛔ Rabbits need lots of medical care and are very expensive, with the cost of living crisis people realise the cost of feeding, litter and bedding is too much to afford

💸 A survey done by the ASPCA showed rabbits to be the MOST expensive companion animal to care for correctly. We can vouch for that!

⚠️ Don't be part of the statistics, be a responsible parent/adult and do not buy live animals at Easter. ⚠️

If you want to experience rabbits in your home, approach a rehoming centre and foster first - you will receive support and equipment while you trial living with rabbits and see if they are for you.

Can anyone help foster over Easter?

🎈 Success Story Sunday 🎈

With the arrival of a new family of baby bunnies, The Whisky Bunnies, at the rescue it always reminds us of the previous baby bunnies we have watched grow up. It’s always fascinating to watch how their dynamic and relationships with each other shift once the hormones kick in, they get neutered and grow up. Then they hop of for new adventures and become part of someone else’s bunny story.

We spoke about The Sporty Babies a few weeks back when we covered Basketball’s story. Today is the turn of Baseball! Baseball was always very protective and nurturing of his siblings. He was a sensitive soul and was extremely close to his spotty brother, Bobsleigh. When the hormones kicked in however, his 3 brothers grew quicker than him and became a bit more rowdy! Baseball then spent most of his time avoiding Bobsleigh, preferring the company of his two sisters.

Baseball was the last Sporty to be adopted but when he did he had just as wonderful home as all his siblings did. He was adopted in July 2022 to a lovely family and became best friends with his new bunny friend. Unfortunately his companion passed away and he came back to the rescue early in 2024 as the family could no longer continue their bunny journey.

He went to stay with one of our foster carers. He soon learned where to find all the best snacks, supervising his foster mum and critiquing tv shows on the sofa with a big bag of hay pellets as his snack of choice! He made himself at home, so much so that he decided he’d quite like to stay. After bonding at the rescue to lovely little Gracie (who is also a BBB bunny) in July 2024 they hopped off home. Baseball was just the bunny to help Gracie who had lost her companion, Gordon. He provides her with so much support and his easy going, gentle nurturing nature has helped Gracie get her spark back 🐰🏡

What do all of these girls have in common?

They all arrived through our doors and instantly made their mark. Bashing the walls of their quarentine kennel out of boredom, dramatic flops, heads pressed at the door waiting for attention and making their presence known.

Very big, bouncy, voluptuous lops with huge personalities. They all have similarities - heavy set ears, harlequin markings, but more importantly - all with carefree, confident characters. Outgoing, affectionate and all look after their friends with strong guidance and leadership.

Brighten, Bertone, Ballzi, Bettina and now Besotted. All came from different backgrounds, but all share similar traits. All cherished and adored by our team.

Have you been lucky enough to meet a big bunderful loppy lady like this?

The constant fear and worries when raising little ones. 😪

It doesn't matter how many litters we've nursed, nurtured or cared for - each one that enters our doors brings the same worries.

Baby rabbits are incredibly fragile, part of the reason there are so many born. It's not often that all from a litter make it through each stage from birth to adulthood.

At this age, 8weeks - everything is a potential hazard. ⚠️ Heads can get stuck in bars, jaws stuck on toys, bones broken from jumping, suffocating inside hay bags, legs trapped. And baby mini lops add another serious worry - gastric bloat.

This week during weaning it was time to introduce a new food to the "fleas" (the Whisky babies). Of course, this must be done incredibly delicately and in stages, starting one gram at a time. This week - one dried rose petal each. Their first taste of rose, a wonderful plant packed with healing properties, antioxidants and devoured by rabbits. 🥀

One petal was enough to cause little Ballindalloch a swollen tummy, gas started to build and he took himself off to the corner to rock, eyes squinting and tummy sore. The next few hours of careful nursing and he was back to normal. But this is the nature of baby buns, and baby mini lops no less. Delicate digestive systems require delicate introductions to foods, but vital to promote healthy gut bacteria and a wide and diverse microbiome for later in life.

Whoever said having baby bunnies around was "fun"? 😓
