Lest we forget 🌺

Did you know that the purple poppy is a symbol of remembrance for animals that served during wartime, based on the traditional red poppy for Remembrance Day.

Lots of different animals were employed to support both sides in WW1 and as a result, millions died. Birds, dogs, horses, mules, camels and elephants all played a vital role in the fight for our freedom.

β€œThey had no choice, their contribution should not be forgotten.”

We were very saddened to hear of the passing of Carol Calder last weekend. Carol was 'inherited' when we bought the practice from Les Clerihew back in 2005, and luckily stayed on to help as our evening receptionist in Biggar, until she retired from Two Rivers in 2016.

Carol was a familiar face to many in Biggar, having also run the town's pet shop, and volunteered with the local Cats Protection charity. Carol will be very sadly missed, and our thoughts are with her family xx

Hopefully not too sad a post. Recently one of our receptionists, Dianne, went to visit to PCS Pet Cremation Services in Ayrshire. This is the crematorium we use as a practice for deceased pets, for either individual cremation with ashes returned to the owner, or for simple communal cremation with ashes scattered in the PCS garden.

It's important to us that deceased pets are handled with care and dignity, and we want to ensure that this continues after they leave the practice. Dianne was really impressed by the senstivity of all the team at PCS, and the care and attention given to all the pets. She saw the process of cremation, and was happy that if her pet was to be cremated there, she would be satisfied with the kind and personal service provided.

While most owners prefer to have us arrange cremation for them, it is possible to take a deceased pet to the crematorium directly. PCS offer a same-day service by appointment, and it may be possible to take a pet's ashes home immediately after. Otherwise, we are very happy to assist in arranging cremation at a difficult time.

Is anyone in the Peebles area missing a cat? This girl was picked up as a stray by someone visiting from Edinburgh, and was taken home by them. They've taken her to a vet in Edinburgh, and she has no microchip. So they are just trying to make sure she doesn't have a home with someone missing her before they adopt her.

If she might be yours, please call Mr Carracedo on 07541604120, thank-you.

David has registered his chooks. Have you? πŸ”

It is now a legal requirement for all keepers of birds (with some exemptions) to register on the Scottish Kept Bird Register. Anyone with a flock, or even an individual bird, must register by 1st December 2024.

Who needs to register? Anyone who keeps any type of bird, including pet birds, poultry, waterfowl, game birds, racing pigeons and birds of prey.

Who doesn’t need to register? Pet psittaciformes (parrots and budgies) and passeriformes (finches and jays) which have no access to the outdoors are exempt. To be exempt, they must be housed completely indoors or in a fully enclosed outdoor structure. If they are taken out for any reason (e.g. to exercise or to attend shows) they must be registered. Taking an exempt bird to the vet does not require registration.

Why must I register? This is a response to bird flu outbreaks in recent years. Registering will ensure that you can be contacted with important updates on any local bird disease outbreaks and information on any biosecurity rules to help protect your flock. This will help to manage potential disease outbreaks such as bird flu and Newcastle disease and limit spread. Identifying all the bird keepers in disease control zones will allow for more effective surveillance so that restrictions can be lifted at the earliest opportunity.

How do I register? Registration is free, online at https://keptbirdregister.service.gov.scot/

You will be asked to provide details of how many and what type of birds you keep and where they are kept. These details have to be kept up to date and they are required to be updated at least annually.
