Meet Fergus! 🐭🦷
Fergus is a much loved, frequent visitor to us as he needs a little help with his teeth. Rodent and Rabbit teeth have no roots and therefore continually grow. Without proper enrichment or diet to help gnaw their teeth down, they can overgrow causing painful wounds, abscesses and reluctance to eat, resulting in other health concerns. In these situations, overgrown teeth can often be kept at bay with a change in diet and enrichment.
Unfortunately for little Fergus, his issues with his teeth arise from malocclusion (where his teeth do not perfectly align) which means he is unable to grind his teeth down even with the correct diet or enrichment. As you can see from the photos, he is also missing his lower left incisor. This means that to keep Fergus his happy, healthy, and very adorable self, he needs to come in for frequent burring of his teeth to ensure they do not overgrow and cause him any issues. We always reward him with lots of cuddles and kisses after! 🤍🐭
Fun fact! Rabbits are not actually rodents. Rodents, animals from the order Rodentia, include species such as Rats, Hamsters, Guinea pigs, Squirrels and Beavers! Rabbits actually belong to the order of Lagomorpha. Rabbits vary from Rodents due to having two pairs of incisors (one pair behind the other) whereas rodents only have one.
