This gorgeous kitten was found abandoned inside a car exhaust last week, sadly her leg was so badly damaged that amputation was the best option. Luckily cats recover quickly from this procedure and manage very well on 3 legs, she was up and eating and playing only 1 hour after her operation. She’s now enjoying life with her Foster family via … they are a wonderful local charity - please go support them and always 😻

Cosmo update:

After around 5 weeks since the initial infection of the pox virus, Cosmos paw is healing very well. He will be able to be free from the cone and go outside at the weekend. Cosmo is feeling much better in himself with lots of zoomies! 🐾😸

See last post for more details on the virus ⬇️

POX VIRUS

Recently one of our team members cat, called Cosmo, has been infected with feline pox virus. Pox virus is a very rare virus in cats and enters through the bite of an infected rodent. Our vet has never seen a case of pox virus before in the 9 years she has worked as a vet!

Cats who are infected with the virus are usually active hunters. A secondary bacterial infection may occur as a result of the bite meaning antibiotics are needed. In this case the skin on the paw became necrotic (dead) and will fall off. The most obvious clinical signs of the viral infection are lesions on the head, back and limbs, poor appetite and high body temperature. Lesions are identified as small bumps covered in crusts. In severe cases the virus can spread to the respiratory tract. Only certain labs can test for the virus and some vets may not be familiar with it.

Infection usually resolves in six to eight weeks. However if they are immunosuppressed, then severe generalised systematic infection may occur which is life threatening. Cat to cat transmission and human infection is very unlikely. Cosmo is recovering well after a course of antibiotics, pain relief and wound care. He will still have to stay indoors with a cone on until the damaged skin on his paw is fully healed. He has been such a brave boy throughout his recovery 💕

In this summer heat it’s important to keep your furbabies cool to prevent hyperthermia☀️Heat stroke is a life threatening condition where the body temperature rises to a level where it cannot regulate itself. It is more severe than heat exhaustion.

Signs of heatstroke in cats to look out for in this hot weather:
Panting
Drooling
Vomiting/diarrhoea
Dizziness/confusion
Restlessness/seeking shade
Red tongue

To treat heatstroke please seek veterinary care. In the meantime you should put them in a cool environment (in the shade and with ventilation), place a cooling mat/damp towel/ice packs wrapped in a towel beneath them, put a fan on them, provide plenty of fresh water. The veterinary team will bring the cats temperature down to a safe level and administer any necessary medication 😸

This sweetie Thor was involved in a road traffic accident recently and broke his leg. Due to the condition his leg was in, his leg had to be amputated and will heal in around 2 weeks time. Thor has been such a brave boy about it and is already learning how to walk with 3 legs 💗

If your cat has an emergency such as Thor’s you can bring them to our clinic between our opening hours 8:30-6:30 Monday-Friday but please call us first on our emergency number 01767 686228 to book an appointment. If you have an emergency outside of our opening hours please contact the queen mother hospital 😸
