❤Senior Sunday❤

This week is all about Liver Disease. The liver is responsible for many important functions, including removing toxins from the body, digestion, metabolism, and storing vitamins & minerals.

There are many causes of liver disease, however, with age can come ‘wear and tear’. This means that it is common for there to be deterioration in liver function as your pet gets older. In early cases of liver disease, your pet may not show signs of being unwell. The liver has the ability to regenerate, meaning that by the time a pet shows signs, there may already be significant damage.

Early management can help your pet to continue to have an excellent quality of life. If your vet has diagnosed your pet with liver disease, they may recommend managing it by prescribing supplements and a special diet. The special diets are designed to be easy to digest, contain high quality fat & protein and contain additional vitamins and minerals to aid liver function.

The great news is that by early detection of liver disease, your pet may be able to continue to have a long and happy life.

With the New Year approaching us, here is a reminder of our Firework tips for keeping your pet as calm as possible 👇

🔹Try to walk your dog as early as you can, before it gets dark and before any fireworks have started.
🔹 When walking, keep your dog on the lead to stop them running away if they hear any sudden noises.
🔹 Keep doors and windows closed to minimise the noise from outside.
🔹Putting the TV or radio on nice and loud will help to distract your pets from the sound of fireworks.
🔹Playing with your dog will also help you keep them distracted.
🔹Provide your dog with a safe space to hide in. This could be their crate covered with a blanket, or their bed tucked under a small table (as featured in the video). So long as it’s cosy, somewhere quiet and your dog can come and go as they please, you can’t go far wrong.
🔹Stay home with your pets – they’ll find your presence very comforting!

Some nervous pets can benefit from a calming aid for stress and anxiety.

For more information please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

❤Senior Saturday❤

This week is all about Chronic Kidney Disease.
At our Senior Pet Health Clinic, your pet will have a blood test that will screen for kidney disease. As they get older, the risk of the condition increases, but the good news is that early detection can increase their life expectancy and quality!

🎄🍗Christmas Poisons🍗🎄

Leftovers:

It may be tempting to give the leftover turkey to your dog, but be careful as cooked bones can easily splinter and get lodged in - or even puncture - the oesophagus or gastrointestinal tract.
Eating large quantities of leftovers, likely cooked in oil or fat, can easily cause vomiting and diarrhoea, or a more severe gastrointestinal upset called pancreatitis.
Leftover food should be disposed of well out of reach of dogs, as ingestion of older, mouldy leftovers can cause severe seizures.

If you think your pet has ingested anything dangerous to them. Please do not hesitate to give us a call.
