🎆FIREWORK PREP 🎇
🎆FIREWORK PREP 🎇
Fireworks can cause stress, anxiety and even aggression in pets. Be prepared for the party season approaching. Here’s our top tips:
1. Use a calming diffuser such as Pet Remedy or Adaptil/Feliway in the house. This should ideally be done a few weeks before firework season.
2. Walk dogs early! Gradually alter your normal walking routine and time a week before to minimise disruption.
3. Keep cats indoors. Cats are more likely to roam and go missing when they are frightened, keeping them inside and distracted keeps them safe.
4. Provide hiding places. Dog crates with blankets over them, cat hides, covering small furry hutches.
5. Shut down the house. Close windows, doors, curtains and blinds. This will muffle the noise from outside.
6. Turn up the TV or Radio. Some stations will also be playing calming music for pets during the fireworks.
7. Consider bringing hutches inside into the house, garage or shed. This will muffle the noise as well and will also protect them from falling sparks and shrapnel.
8. Stay at home. If you know your pet is frightened or this is your pets first firework season, consider staying at home with them and giving them reassurance.
9. Give them a treat. Giving your pets a high reward treat, one they don’t often get, is a good distraction. Using stuffed chew toys or puzzle mats can keep them stimulated for a few hours.
10. Make sure they’re microchipped! Spooked animals will try and run away. It is not always possible to prevent them from getting out if they are scared, so make sure they’re microchipped with your updated details to allow for quick return.
