When most people think of reining, the Quarter Horse and Paint Horse typically come to mind. However, there are several other breeds that can excel in reining with the right training and preparation. If you’re considering a horse for reining but are looking for something a little different, here are five great breeds that are capable of performing well in this exciting sport:
1. Appaloosa
Known for their distinctive spotted coats, Appaloosas share many traits with the Quarter Horse, including a calm disposition and agility. They can be excellent reining horses when trained properly, and their versatility allows them to compete in a variety of disciplines.
2. Arabian
Though less common in reining, Arabians can excel in the sport due to their natural athleticism, intelligence, and stamina. While not as large or muscled as Quarter Horses, their agility and responsiveness can make them successful in reining, particularly for riders looking for a lighter, more spirited horse.
3. Welsh Cob (Section D)
A versatile and athletic breed, the Welsh Cob is widely available in the UK and used in various disciplines. With their intelligence, stamina, and natural athleticism, they can make excellent reining horses. Typically between 13.2 to 15 hands, Welsh Cobs are responsive and willing, making them a great option for riders looking for a smaller, capable horse.
4. Friesian
Friesians are elegant, larger horses often seen in dressage, but some have competed successfully in reining as well. Known for their strength, balance, and intelligence, Friesians can be trained to perform reining maneuvers at certain levels, making them a unique and capable choice.
5. Morgan
Morgans are known for their versatility and athleticism across various disciplines, including reining. Their smooth gaits and strong work ethic make them ideal for regional or amateur reining competitions, where their natural balance and agility shine.

While these breeds may not be as dominant in reining as Quarter Horses, they all possess the agility, intelligence, and athleticism needed to perform well in the sport with the right training.

Some very interesting information here. We are all responsible for our horses and British Reining supports within the reining industry.

Please take a look to ensure you are up to date on the latest substances lists.

Do you know the difference between banned substances and controlled medications? 🤔

Clean sport is based on the philosophy that a horse should compete on its own merits, without any unfair advantage. It’s also to protect equine welfare because medication can mask issues such as poor fitness, lameness or disease.

The FEI’s prohibited substances list is updated on 1 January each year. It applies to all horses and ponies competing at national and international level, and is divided into two categories…

💊 Banned substances are deemed by the FEI to have no legitimate use in the competition horse and/or have a high potential for abuse. They’re not permitted for use in the competition horse at any time.

💊 Controlled medications are substances deemed by the FEI to have therapeutic value and/or be commonly used in equine medicine. However, they have the potential to affect performance and/or be a welfare risk, and shouldn’t be in your horse’s system at the point of competition.

The 2024 British Reining Championship Show was held at Sovereign Quarter Horses. The first stand alone championship show in many years and boy was it a success!!!

Our 2025 calendar is already looking in good shape with 2 British Reining Clinics at the beginning of the season 1st - 2nd February Gilles Huyghe at The Crescent Arena (sold out) and 14th, 15th and 16th March Lukasz Czechowich at Bodiam International Arena (contact for details)
14th March will be our AGM Bodiam International Arena
2nd, 3rd and 4th May British Reining Standalone Spring Show - venue to be confirmed

We are super excited to announce classes being held at the Sovereign Quarter Horses Heart of the Fens Show June 6th - 8th 2025. Thank you to this fantastic venue for including us in their schedule.

5th, 6th and 7th September British Reining stand alone Championship Show - venue to be confirmed.

Huge congratulations to Francesca Sternberg for becoming the first British qualifying competitor for The Run For The Million!!!! Wow what an achievement 👏👏👏👏.

We are all backing Francesca as she heads towards the biggest Reining event in any calendar!!

Solo went one more time for me today, and clinched us a spot at next year’s Run For A million!! 😍 Whilst doing that I also believe he went over the $100K NRHA LTE. That’s a lot of $’s per square inch, when you consider how small he is!! 🤣 Thank you to all at Galaxy Quarter Horses for sharing your home with us this summer, it’s been a lot of fun as well as successful 🤩 we couldn’t have achieved what we did without you!
