Solar storms and how it may impact your dogs.

Scientific studies have repeatedly demonstrated that dogs are sensitive to geomagnetic changes.

Currently the earth is experiencing a powerful solar storm. It's effects on our dogs should not be underestimated. Especially our sensitive working dogs who are bred to have a heightened sense of direction. Dogs who are anxious or nervous may experience exacerbated symptoms. Dogs are sensitive to even small changes in the earth's magnetic field, this current storm is big and disruptive.

Epileptic dogs and people may be affected. There is a huge body of evidence relating to solar storms and seizures, have a little Google, there's too many relevant bits of literature to post here.

What can you do? Dogs are at increased risk of becoming disorientated in new environments, keep them on lead, in sight, have a heightened awareness of where they are. For dogs who rely on their sense of direction for work such as sheepdogs working hills, search and rescue dogs, tracking dogs, hunting dogs and trail dogs, it might be worth evaluating putting off any work where a dog may get lost. This is not me being a f***y either, I've already heard of a couple of normally savvy dogs becoming lost and disoriented in the north of Scotland, out of character for them.

In humans existing mental health conditions can worsen temporarily, particularly conditions caused by or associated with trauma, where your integral ability to orientate becomes distrupted and makes you feel unsafe, increasing anxiety and hypervigilance. This change in your presentation can also impact your dogs.

Just something to be aware of. As much as it sounds like hippy woo woo nonsense, I can assure you, it's a thing.

"the idea that animals can detect Earthโ€™s magnetic field has traveled the path from ridicule to well-established fact in little more than one generation. Dozens of experiments have now shown that diverse animal species, ranging from bees to salamanders to sea turtles to birds, have internal compasses. Some species use their compasses to navigate entire oceans, others to find better mud just a few inches away."

๐Ÿ•. please help me raise money for dementia uk.๐Ÿ•
My two dogs and I are planning to walk 100 miles in the month of March. please donate what you can to help us on our way. It is all appreciated..
My reason why........
This is my Mother in Law Jan, one of her favourite things to do in life was to wander around the shops with her daughter Nikki buying things for all of her grandchildren. she cooked the most amazing sunday dinners and as for christmas!! going to their house was my favourite thing to do. She had biscuit tins and sweet tins that all the kids young and old always raided. Four years ago she took a tumble at home and ended up on hospital. She never walked again, You see, she has Lewy body dementia, vascular dementia and a few other types of dementia. Her body is forgetting what it should do, her legs no longer receive signals from her brain so she can't bend her legs, she can wiggle her toes ๐Ÿฅฐ but her legs just don't work. The joint pain is terrible so she cannot even be hoisted out of bed. She has spent 4 years in bed. (can you imagine 1460 days and nights in bed). She has lost the ability to comprehend time, and is unable to reason. In a short space of time this vibrant lady has lost almost everything, her husband (died April 2022), her home as she couldn't stay their alone she needs help to do everything including drinking and eating. She gets down , but always smiles when she sees us.
Please help raise as much money as we can.
Thank you
Tracey, Max and Digby. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

As the seasons change, so does the risk of Alabama rot, a serious but rare disease affecting dogs, causing skin and kidney damage. As we enter its most prevalent months, it's crucial to recognise the signs: skin sores, fatigue, loss of appetite, and vomiting. ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ•

Awareness and quick action are vital for your dog's health. Keep them clean, especially after muddy adventures, and always consult your vet if you spot any symptoms.

Be sure to share with your friends who have dogs to help spread awareness.

Grass seed season is officially in full swing! ๐ŸŒฟโš ๏ธ

We removed 38 grass seeds from a family of dogs over the weekend! These were found mainly in their coats and feet, although one was also found in an ear canal! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

During the hot dry seasons it's important to check your dog's coat, feet and ears after each walk for grass seeds (especially if your pet has long hair) ๐Ÿฆฎโ˜€๏ธ

These pesky seeds are designed to pe*****te the skin with their sharp ends and also migrate through tissues and canals such as ears and nostrils ๐ŸŽฏ

* although uncommon, these seeds can also attach onto cats and small furries as well ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฐ*

๐Ÿ“ž If you suspect your pet has a grass seed and it is not visible to remove easily then please call the practice on 01843 260278 so we can help your pet the best way possible

We often talk about a dog being over threshold. This is a great example of what we mean.
24/06/2023

We often talk about a dog being over threshold. This is a great example of what we mean.

๐Ÿ’กUnderstanding your dog's threshold is crucial in managing their reactivity and anxiety levels. It helps you determine the optimal distance or intensity at which to expose your dog to triggers that cause their reactivity during behaviour modification exercises. By keeping your dog emotionally below โ€˜thresholdโ€™, you can create a more controlled and comfortable environment for your dog, allowing them to remain calm and responsive.

When the concept of โ€œgoing over thresholdโ€ is brought up, people often envision a dog barking, snarling, or displaying aggressive behaviour. However, it is important to recognise that โ€œgoing over thresholdโ€ means crossing over into an emotionally distressed state, which may manifest as shutting down, freezing, exhibiting overly excitable behaviour, or becoming so distracted that there is a loss of connection.

โš–๏ธPushing a dog beyond their comfort zone (threshold) can lead to heightened anxiety, fear, and potentially aggressive behaviour. It is essential to respect and work within their threshold levels to ensure their emotional well-being which in turn will help facilitate effective training and behaviour modification.

When a dog is over threshold, they are primarily reacting rather than thinking โ€“ they are in a fight-flight, freeze, fidget, or fawn state. Their emotional and physiological responses are heightened, making it difficult for them to โ€˜listenโ€™ or respond to cueโ€™s. They may be too overwhelmed or focused on the perceived threat to process information effectively.

Through systematic desensitization (gradual exposure therapy), and counter-conditioning (changing an emotional response) techniques, you can help raise your dog's tolerance levels towards a stimulus that causes emotional distress over time. By carefully managing their exposure to triggers and pairing it with positive experiences and rewards, you can help them develop more resilience and confidence, allowing them to handle challenging situations with greater ease.

Mardi Richmond MA, CPDT-KA describes it as: -
โ€œConsider the threshold of a front door. When you cross a threshold, you move from one space to another. A behaviour threshold is a similar concept; it is when your dog crosses from one emotional state to another. If you spend time with a dog that is concerned about other dogs, you have probably witnessed the moment when he or she moves from seemingly okay into out-of-control behaviour. That is going over threshold.โ€

When a dog is over threshold, teaching them new behaviours or trying to modify their behaviour becomes challenging and would be inappropriate to do at that moment in time as they are not in the right frame of mind for learning to take place. Their heightened state makes it difficult for them to learn and retain new information. It is important to bring the dog back to a โ€˜sub-thresholdโ€™ state before attempting any training or behaviour modification.

โœ๏ธFurthermore, thresholds are not fixed and can fluctuate. Unlike physical thresholds like a front door, emotional and behavioural thresholds can fluctuate depending on various factors. These factors include the dog's current state of arousal, the environment, previous experiences, and the specific trigger or stimulus.
Having awareness of the dog's threshold levels and being vigilant in their behaviour and responses is crucial for effective management and training.

Adjusting the distance, intensity, or duration of exposure to triggers based on the dog's threshold can help create a more conducive learning environment and prevent the dog from becoming over threshold.
