Recall tips for a food driven dog ๐Ÿพ
All dogs are different therefore what motivates one dog may not be the same for another. You have to really know your dog when training. What gets them moving, what excites them and what doesn't.
If your struggling with your recall drop me a message to book a session or for further information regarding training.

๐ŸพPUPPY OF THE WEEK ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ…

Meet Oreo.
She has just started her puppy power training classes with her family. Already she shows so much potential. A proper little pocket rocket ๐Ÿš€

She had her first session this week and we worked on getting used to the new surroundings, focus, we also started some heel work and worked on recall ( mainly recalling to a sit position rather than launching at whoever called her)

Summer is here finally,
Meaning we are due to have a few warm days coming up like last week. A lot of us will be spending more time outside with our dogs but we need to make sure we know the signs and dangers of heat stroke to have fun in the sun with our dogs safely.๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒž

Puppy sessions are commencing on Sundays in July, at Witton lakes park. I currently have 3 slots still available on Sundays for puppy sessions staring in July. Get in touch via Facebook messenger or WhatsApp to book your slot of a puppy course or for further information. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

The dogs heath is a priority therefore if temperatures succeed 22 degrees sessions will be postponed as it is not fair on the dogs and could make them ill. If sessions are safe to go ahead fresh drinking water will be provided at the sessions and we will stay in the shade where possible.

Apologies for being a bit absent on here lately, I have had a lot going on personally recently, But I am back!
Thankyou for your patients during this time๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฅฐ

Meet daisy!
Shes such a sweet, happy girl. One big problem... impulse control. She has no or lack of impulse control, around her sister Bella mainly and can be too rough with her. She has high prey drive too which is not the best mixed with lack of impulse control. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ

Today we worked on her being calm and focused on mom while her sister Bella was playing fetch.
She did so well I'm so proud of how she was today. We even swaped roles and let daisy do some fun play while Bella was working on impulse control with her dad. Huge win as daisy was more focused on her mom and the game then jumping all over her sister!

Can't wait to see how she progress over the next few sessions!

Fun Fact for you!
Dogs are not actually colour blind. They can actually see shades of blue and yellow. This is due to them having fewer cones (light sensitive cell) than rods(low light cell) in their retina(thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye). This is also the reason why they can see better than us in the dark.
Although yes they can not see a range of colour as we can, they do see a lot better in low light than we can. Colours that they cant see blend into either blue, yellow or grey depending on their shades.

3 of our favourite Enrichment games to play.

Dogs are olfactory, meaning they use their nose way more than any other sense, however forget to use this alot as We try and get a dog to see things and look for things without using their biggest tool. Nose work is so powerful and is possibly the best way to mentally stimulate your dog.

All three games in the video are olfactory based, meaning the dogs has to use their nose.
Yes the first game although it is memory and requires your dog to remember where you put the food they could just as easy sniff the food out. If you swich the cups around or don't let them see where you put it.

These are all pretty easy games and great for young and old dogs.

Have a go and have fun with your dog.๐Ÿพ

How many of you actually have fun training๐Ÿ• โค

Often we get so stressed and focused on one specific thing during training we forget to let go and have a bit of fun!

We need to remember to not get over worked, its not good for our dogs and its definitely not good for ourselves!

Me and blue love doing a bit of freestyle heel work to music( I can't dance to save my life ๐Ÿคฃbut that dont matter because we have fun doing this)

Does your dog know how to
๐Ÿšซโ›”LEAVE ITโ›”๐Ÿšซ

I class this as one of the most important things you will ever need to teach your dog, especially a puppy!

Teaching your dog a leave it command could one day save their life! Puppies like babies are into everything that they shouldnt. Some of these things could kill your dog or put them at serious risk like: wires, small objects they can choke on, food they should not have, candles+fire etc ( bliss was fascinated with our open fire)

Blissful is 15 weeks old and this is her second session on LEAVE IT.
I keep session small for her and break her off a few times so its not too much for her.๐Ÿพ

Also note I have blue on a boundry while I train with her. He is also learning to be patient. Its hard to train 2 dogs at one time belive me but it pays off in the end. Bliss will also do the same when I do a session with blue as boundrys are also verry important for a puppy and an adult dog. Especially if you have a multi dog/animal household. Everyone needs their space. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

Should you be letting your dog off the lead if you don't have a reliable recall?? ๐Ÿค”

The world can be a dangerous place and if your dog doesn't have a strong recall they can get them selves into a lot of bother.

Did you know if a farmer thinks your dog may be a danger to their live stock they have the right to shoot and kill your dog? ๐Ÿ’ฅ
Therfore it is vital for you to have a super reliable recall to prevent this.

If you are not 100 percent sure your dog will come back dont let them off the lead. Even in some situations I put blue on his lead for his own safety. Around livestock, near a road or moving vehicles, children and strange dogs ( ones he doesn't know). The reason behind this is I dont know what they may be like with blue or anything about them so I just put blue on lead until we pass then take him back off.

If you want a super rapid recall like this give us a call or drop us a message to book a session on recall.

Short session with blue this morning to get him back into the swing of things๐Ÿ’™

Its a good idea to record your training sessions and watch them back, that way you can look at what improvements you need to make and the progress you have made๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

No dog is ever perfect no matter if its a trainers dog or a behaviourist. If you want perfection then you should probably get a robot. Blue has bundles of personality and enthusiasm and I wouldnt ever want to change that. There are many things we work on and improve. This video shows that mistakes in training get made and thats how we and our dogs learn. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™
Try to not get frustrated when your dog makes a mistake, misses a cue or three, what matters is you have fun and correct the mistake.
After all the dog never knows its done wrong you just want to make sure the right choices get reinforced.

Muzzle training with blue ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

As promised a short training session video of blue doing some muzzle conditioning.

During this session I wait for blue to offer his face in the muzzle. I click and reward him for this. If he feels uncomfortable and tries to take his head out I let him.
I dont want to force him into it as we are only training and forcing him could result in him thinking the muzzle is a bad thing.

My aim for this session is to build up duration on him offering his head so I wait a few seconds before I reward. But if you are just starting out you want to reward them with any interaction with the muzzle first before building up any duration. Remember to start small and look at the small improvements. A tap or a sniff of the muzzle will be a good way to start and then build on that. ๐Ÿพ

I then fasten the muzzle to him and reward him highly for it. I keep the session short as you don't want to over whelm them and do too much. Always end on a good note. ๐Ÿถ

You don't have to use a muzzle for this. You can use a cone, a halti, a cup or a tub will do. Swich it up with the objects to keep it fun and different. ๐Ÿพ

I cover muzzle conditioning in the puppy package. The puppy package is five 1-2-1 structured lessons set in a local park for puppies 12 weeks and up. For more information drop a us a message.

Apologies for being so quiet on here lately. Unfortunately blue (my dog) had a bit of a accident the other week so he has taken my full attention.

I wanted to talk about MUZZLES and how important they are.
It is important to set your dog up for success and one of the ways you can do this is by getting them comfortable wearing a muzzle even if they dont need one!

If this year has tought us anything it's that you never know what might happen in the future. A situation may arise where a muzzle is needed. Just like for blue at the vets. He was in pain and scared so for the vets saftey we agreed for him to be muzzled and due to our training sessions blue was ok with wearing one it didn't add anymore stress to the situation. I've seen the same at groomers, some dogs get nervous and need to be muzzled for theres and the groomers saftey however most of the time they are not used to it and this can make situations worse. This is not fair on either dog or groomer.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how well trained your dog is fear and stress can take over(due to fight or flight )and they can do something completely out of character, therefore it's better to be prepared just in case!.

Muzzle training is something I cover in the puppy package.
For more information drop us a message on Facebook or text on 07862178725 ๐Ÿพ

I will post a video separately of a short training session I do with blue on muzzle training so keep your eye peeled. ๐Ÿ‘€

Are you having fun when training, or are you finding training to be a chore?

Dog training shouldn't be a task it should be enjoyed by both parties. If you find that you seem to be losing motivation or getting stressed STOP. Take a break, do something fun or change the way your doing it to make it more enjoyable. The same goes for our dogs too. Once they seem to have had enough change the session and have fun together. Afterall the main reason we get dogs is for companionship and to enjoy life together! Puppies especially as they have a shorter attention span so they need a lot more breaks inbetween and more play sessions.๐Ÿพ๐Ÿถ

It's a common myth that dogs love to please... dogs know what's good for them and know that when they do something good it pleases us and in turn they get something out of it through rewards. This can often be seen as working just to please. Take a sniffer dog for example they enjoy the game of sniffing and tracking. It would be rather difficult to near impossible to get them to do the job if they didn't enjoy it and reward they get after.

Each session we do at blues clues dog training is designed to be fun and filled with lots of learning. The best way to learn (for us and our dogs)is to have fun, that way you hardly notice your learning so it doesn't feel like a task/chore. ๐Ÿพ

14/11/2020

Do you find yourself repeating a command/cue over and over again until your dog listens?
Do most people tell you your dog is too stubborn or ignorant?
This can be fixed easily in just a few simple steps.๐Ÿพ

1) stop repeating your command/cue.
So for example if your asking your dog to sit, give the sit command and wait a few seconds for them to do it.
2)lure them into the sit if they dont sit once you've given the command.
3) practice, practice, practise. Reward them highly when they do the command without being prompted.

If your teaching a new command you do this in reverse, so you lure them into that position and give the cue as they do the behaviour. For example for sit, you give the sit command as soon as their bum touches the ground, and reward highly for this. As they start to learn and understand you can start to take out the lure.
Dont progress too prematurely and dont be afraid to go back a stage if your dog is finding it a bit difficult. Take your time and have fun!๐Ÿถโญ

Give it a go, and let me know how you get on!
We Love to see progress videos of your dogs ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

Its that time of year again, the time most pawrents dread... ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐ŸŽ†๐ŸŽ‡
Each year seems to be getting worse with the amount of fireworks being let off and more animals suffering from anxiety due to it. Here are some of my tips to help get through this stressful time with your pets.

1)Dont let them see you panic. This is probably one of the most important points, as animals pick up on our emotions. As their care givers its our responsibility to show them its not so scary, even baby talking them can make them pick up on your anxity. Console them yes of course but dont make a big deal out of it, talk softly and calmly reassuring them theres nothing to worry about.

2)Exercise and feed them before the fireworks start, this way they should be tired and would have eaten something as Most dogs struggle to eat and drink when scared.

3)Crerate a safe space/den. Make it dark and comfy, add a blanket or something with your scent on, as it is known to give them some comfort.

4)Remove visual stimulation, close your curtains and turn down the lights. This will easy some anxiety as they dont need to focus on so much going on.

5)Mask the sound of the loud and unexpected bangs by playing music, classical is good for calming pets down or there are specially made playlist on spotify and youtube. Find a volume that they are ok with, too loud and you could be making things worse

6) Give them a long lasting chew (if they will eat) just before the fireworks start- You will have a better chance getting them interested in something before to pair the fireworks with something nice. You could even try a play session and start getting them engaged in something before they get too scared, especially with young dogs as this can help desensitise them to the sound/event.

7) Try and fill you home or the room the pet is with aromatherapy smells. lavender, mint, vanilla or some of the calming spays and plug-ins you can get from a pet shop. (mixed reviews on this one but every dog is different)

8)Massage them, Just like us some dogs enjoy a good massage to relax their mussels. Have them lie down either on the floor or on you and gently rub their mussels on their legs, back, neck and shoulders. Dont force them though, some dogs wont like it, you should know what your dog is comfortable with and where they do and do not like being touched.

9) Anxiety wraps or thunder shirts. these work by adding pressure to the dogs torso causing an calming effect, that similar to swaddling a crying baby. You can pick these up at a shop or create one your self using bandages r even a scarf. (if you are interested in making one yourself drop me a message and i can show you a step by step in making one for your dog out of a scarf or bandage)

10)Have a talk with your vet for some anxiety medication if none of these tips help.

11) sock muffler- this is where you cut the end of a sock and put the sock over the dogs head covering their ears( make sure its not too tight) it helps them feel comforted like the thunder shirt technique but also helps muffle the sounds.

one more important thing to remember is to make sure you dogs microchip is up to date and they are wearing an id disk with your contact details on, just in case they manage to escape.

If there is anything you have found that helps calm your dog down and i have not listed, Drop it in the comments to help other dog pawrents like yourself. We are all in this together.๐Ÿ’™

Meet the inspiration for blues clues dog training.

I have been in the very same position you might be in now with my own dog. Blue was facing trouble, in open space he would try to escape his harness/ collar. He would bolt out of the front door when it was opened and go stir crazy when the door bell rang. Amongst many other common training struggles.
Many trainers gave up on blue and I.

Truth was because of all the stress me and blues relationship was getting dragged though the mud with all the stress we both went through and not every dog is the same. What may have worked for one might not work for another. I've found what worked for blue ๐Ÿ’™ he is now a confident, happy go lucky dog that does silly things at times but I dont have to worry about him running off or going crazy at the door anymore

At blues clues the training is tailored to you and your dog. Finding out what motivates them and using that to our advantage ๐Ÿพ
