Last week Sarah had the absolute honour and privilege to work with some amazing animals and professionals to complete a two day animal training workshop hosted at @paigntonzoo and led by Jo Mason of Educating Animals. Words cannot describe the humbling experience of working with the amazing Daniel a Hamadrya Baboon, teaching him to put his arm through a drainpipe and hold a bar which can be used for consent based handling for injections or blood draws. Working with other @puppyschooluk regional managers, this team building cpd certainly won’t be forgotten. Wow! We love teaching the APDT Good Companion Awards and the fun, focus but sheer amazing ability it can achieve for dogs and their owners. Lainey and her owners have been working on learning a ‘pull’ cue which is something assistance dogs learn to do to help their owners, like opening a door or drawer. This is for the third level ‘Intermediate’ but they start with Foundation basics and progress upwards. CPD day gun dog training with my girlie yesterday and working on her retrieve, basic level using two toy technique. The key is to show the second toy and make it exciting as soon as she starts to return. Throw the second toy once she brings the first back and drops it. By keeping first toy still, it encourages the second toy to be more exciting to be retrieved. I also use my ‘silly’ voice to get her all excited for the game. Eventually we will swap two toys to retrieve with one and food reward but only when she’s consistently bringing it back.
