06/02/2024

The medicines we prescribe to keep your pet free from worms and insects such as fleas are called parasiticides and the regulations for prescribing them have changed. This is because of concerns over the rise in resistance to these medicines, coupled with the potential impact they have on the environment.
What this means is that from now on, to prescribe, and dispense the more effective products that we prefer to use (the prescription-only products) we have to examine your animal every 12 months and discuss with you the need for these products.
If you require prescription-only parasiticides and your pet hasn’t had an examination in the last 6 months, you will need to book an appointment where we will perform an examination and discuss your pet’s needs. If you combine this examination with a vaccination or with a consultation for something else there will be no additional charge. If you simply require parasiticides then there will be a minor consultation fee, as well as a charge for the products.
Thank you

We're sorry to say that a system error on our database has meant that some unneccesary vaccine reminders have been sent out this morning. Our developers are working hard to ensure it doesn't happen again, but we're really sorry if you've been affected and apologise for any concern it may have caused.

We are delighted to announce that on 1st September, our vets Steph Cook and Euan Laidlaw officially became directors and shareholders of Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care Ltd. We are very proud to be maintaining and reinforcing the independence of the Practice at a time when so many vet practice owners have sold to large corporate organisations. We strongly believe that selling to City investors dilutes the passion and care that comes from being owned by local people. We are therefore firmly committed to staying independent, offering a truly caring service to you, our clients - and the animals that you love. We will continue to build and grow the Practice and provide opportunities for our amazing team to invest in SMVC. Thank you for your continued support and all your good wishes as Steph and Euan become part of the SMVC leadership team.

We're recruiting a small animal vet for our Hexham branch - do you know anyone who fits the bill? Please share, share, share!
Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care, a highly respected, independent small animal and equine Practice in ‘the happiest place in the country to live’* Hexham, seeks a Small Animal Vet to join our team. You may be a new graduate or a very experienced vet – we’re just looking for that special someone!
We will happily take a flexible approach to your work/life balance, and your days can include a combination of surgery, medicine-work-ups and consultations – to some extent as per your preference. Anything from 2 to 5 days a week would be fine, ideally with an on-call contribution, as we are open and staffed 24 hours. You’d be working with a loyal and varied client base, with plenty of opportunity to work up your own cases in a professional but fun environment, and with happy and motivated colleagues.
We have a deeply embedded culture of care – for our clients, for their animals and for each other. We offer both a new graduate programme and a return-to-work programme through XLVets to support new vets or those returning after a career break. We also provide in-team mentoring and regular clinical meetings.
We have interim accommodation available to rent for anyone re-locating.
And… if you love the outdoors, there are opportunities for CPD participation attached to skiing in the alps and sailing in Greece through our sister training company, CPD Actif. We’ve also been known to party (!) and believe that work shouldn’t be boring!
If you like the sound of all this, please send your CV and covering letter to our Practice Manager, Sue Robson – [email protected] , or if you’d like a chat about the job in the first instance, please call our MD, Roger Scott, or Sue Robson on 01434 608999

We've got a big week next week - we're upgrading to a new, improved computer system on Tuesday (it manages all our appointments, records, etc). We hope you'll all be patient as we get used to the new system - we'll be a little bit slower for the first few days! Thank you, from all of us!

Whilst summer can be an enjoyable season for many of us, higher temperatures and summer activities can bring increased risks to pets. A previous survey by BVA found that half of vets had treated animals for heatstroke, and more than a third had treated animals for other heat-related conditions, including breathing difficulties, burnt paw pads and sunburn.
Follow our top tips to ensure that your pet has a healthy and happy summer!
Today - Heatstroke:

Probably the most well-known summer hazard, heatstroke is a life-threatening condition which can lead to organ failure and in some cases, even death. Pets overheat easily as they are unable to cool themselves down and regulate their body temperature effectively by sweating, so it’s important to take steps to prevent them from developing heatstroke.

Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds such as bulldogs and pugs, breeds with thick coats, overweight or obese animals, and animals with lung disease are even more at risk of developing heatstroke.

To reduce the risks of heatstroke:

Make sure your pet has access to a cool, shaded and well-ventilated area, both indoors and outdoors
Always have clean drinking water available (you can add ice to keep it cool)
Walk dogs during cooler times of the day (early morning or late evening) and avoid the heat of the day.
Never leave pets in a car or hot room (e.g. conservatory). “Not long” is too long.
If your pet shows signs of heatstroke such as heavy panting, restlessness, drooling and lack of coordination, contact us immediately.

Today is World Veterinary Day, so here are some facts that you may or may not know about vets!
💙It takes at least 5 years of schooling to qualify as a veterinary surgeon.
💙There are 11 recognised veterinary schools in the UK.
💙There are over 29,000 vets working in the UK.
💙Full time vets will work an average of 42 hours a week (ours actually work more!)
💙More than 50% of UK vets work in small animal practices.
💙Vets in the UK have seen 40% more patients since the Coronavirus pandemic.
The time, effort, energy, motivation and hard work that goes into becoming a veterinary surgeon is remarkable and it takes a special type of person to make the grade! We would like to say a big thank you to each and every one of our vets at Scott Mitchell. You're amazing and we wouldn't be able to do what we do best without you!
Share a photo of your pet in the comments and tell us what your vet means to you!

It's fireworks time again - and many pets become anxious at the sound of them going off. Here are some things you can do to help to make this time of year as stress-free as possible for you and your furry friends!
* Take your dog for a walk well before firework displays are due to begin.
* Make sure all doors, windows and cat flaps are closed and the curtains are closed.
* If your pet prefers to go away and hide, let them. Don't try to coax them out of their safe place - this is their way of coping.
* Stay calm yourself - keep your behaviour as normal as possible - if you get anxious or comfort your pet more than usual, this can make them worse.
* Music can help - have a playlist ready.
* If you have found that medication helps, talk to us in good time - don't leave it until November 5th itself!
* Make sure your pet's microchip details are up to date just in case they do run away - again, we can help our clients with this, but please don't leave it until the last minute!
We wish all of our clients and their pets a happy and calm fireworks season and don't forget, if you need us out of hours, out Hexham branch is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
