Imagine if you could inoculate against undesirable or inappropriate behaviour when your dog is an adult.
Measured doses of punishment early, like vaccinations, can nip behaviour in the bud early doors, before small issues become big issues. They create opportunities for clarity and young dogs to instead move past unwanted behaviour and onto WANTED behaviour that can be repeatedly REINFORCED with food or play!
But left unchecked, with a history of rehearsing the behaviour, it may take a bigger dose of punishment, or longer to manage and train through the situation to get rid of it!!
Be smart, work under the guidance of a trainer, but don’t dismiss it from your training plan. You have a puppy…. But you got a dog 🐕

I bet, most people, would fond their dogs would run rings around them if they ever tried jogging or running at either their dogs pace or for the duration their dog wants to run.
Get them to a poi t they can safely be off lead so they can run.
And if they aren’t there yet… buckle up and get yourself moving a bit quicker with them now and again!
I promise, it will be worth it.

The term ‘dog training’ doesn’t sit quite right with me.
Were you ‘trained’ as a child, or raised to become a well behaved rounded member of society?
When you get a dog…. Training is absolutely part of the process (think of it like education) but there are countless daily interactions we have (or dont have) that affect our relationship with our dog, for better and for worse.
What do you want? Tricks or Behaviour?

Want a better life with your small dog?
Make sure your providing FULFILMENT not just enrichment or luxury.
Give your small dog a reason for existing, beyond being just a lap dog…. Thats comes at the end of the day!

This little f**k-knows-what-a-doodle is shaping up as a cracking, energetic and fun dog.
But let me tell you a secret to our success…. He learned NO means an inescapable and unpleasant punishment, in the same way GOOD means ‘your going to get to fill your face’.
Teaching him that young and early has meant two things.
1) the punishment required has been minimal and undesirable behaviours have rarely stuck around. Less reinforcement history means less is required!
2) because we have set the boundaries 99% of the time, our existing dogs didnt need to, which made for a more peaceful integration into the family unit (kids and all).

I want you to think about this and how it might apply to your dog.
Often, our dogs behaviour is driven by a history of practice and success, even if we weren’t paying attention. Or even worse, an assumption by the dog that we actually WANTED that behaviour because we allowed it to play out in our presence!
Sitting at the window staring out for prolonged time before barking at a passer by.
Pulling us on the lead.
Running up to every dog it sees.
Being allowed to chase birds in the garden because its
‘harmless’ but not safe to be off lead for fear of chasing off after things.
Training for individual commands or behaviours can sometimes feel like whack-a-mole if we don’t consider the wider relationship.

Sometimes there are things you can’t control that make you feel like you and your dog had a set back.
You were probably doing the best you could do in the circumstances at the time.
If it went south because of something you couldn’t control (other owner or other dog) it’s best to not dwell on it. Think if there’s anything you can’t action next tome, bit move on from it.

MILLIE
On friday, we said goodbye to Millie ❤️
She was 15 1/2, had kidney disease, was blind and was a shadow of her former self.

She will always be a special dog, not least because she was my first dog!
She was there from the beginning of my adult life, the day we collected the keys to our first house.
She taught me the unconditional love of a dog. The joy they bring. The fun.
She taught me how to read dogs, to understand them better.
She is the reason I wanted to learn about training and behaviour. But I got many things wrong…. I wish I could have my time again, to use what I learned to give her even more of what she needed.
She was far too smart, with potential we barely tapped i to.
We was happiest when running the agility course, bathing in the sun, or pressed up against the fore or a radiator.
A true lap dog, with a stereotypical chihuahua spicyness.
She was half jack russell, so her energy had no end!
She took 3 puppies and 3 children joining us in her stride over her 15 1/2 years of life.
She never ceased to amaze us, right up until the end.
I dont think we will ever have another dog quite like Millie.

Be mindful of the things your dog is allowed to repeatedly do, that are maybe counterproductive to your training goals.
Use management to prevent unwanted behaviour when your not able to give your full attention.
Ask yourself if you let too many little things slide.
Make a training plan that doesn’t just focus on the single problem, but rather tackles the overall communication and boundary setting.
Have a successful week 👊

Everything in moderation.
If you want to build value, moderation will be key.
Give too much fuss and affection and your dog may take it for granted.
Too much unstructured play, and your dog may find it hard to switch off.
Too much restriction, and you may drive the dog to frustration.
People often find that overindulgence in their own lives has its downsides.
Maybe it does for your dog too.

Food for thought….
Does your dog earn their rewards? Or are you bribing them?
If your not sure, think of this example:
A) The dog walks past another dog without lunging, we mark as we pass and reward AFTER.
B) the dog only walks past without lunging BECAUSE we hold treats and repeatedly feed.

In A) the dog has earned the reward. Its learning.
In B) we have bribed or distracted the dog. Its not learning the correct behaviour.
