Such a lovely afternoon judging the dog show at Trifest on behalf of Second Chance Animal Rescue Southampton.
What a lot of lovely doggies - so hard to pick but the best in show went to Jessie, the smiliest little schnauzer 🥰
Betty you make us laugh so much 😂
We love that the new sea defences on Southsea Common double up as a free agility course 🐾
I had to share this little video from yesterday as it just sums up why I love my work ❤️
This is Lola, doing figure of 8 walking training with Millie. Bearing in mind that just a couple of weeks ago, Millie was a “head down pull like a train” at the end of the lead dog, who made no eye contact and wouldn’t even take a treat on a walk. You can tell that both Lola and Millie are enjoying this training and it is working wonders!
Delighted with such lovely progress for this boy. Happily wearing a harness and playing a nose touch game on a walk. Small steps… all in the right direction 🥰🐾
Working with an equipment phobic collie to wear an escape proof harness. This first video from last week shows him choosing to engage positively. By the end of the session today the harness was fully on and we went for a walk around the garden 🥰. This huge progress was purely down to him having the choice to volunteer to play the game, knowing the harness will not be forced on him.
Impulse control training coming along nicely 🥰
Love this boy, but he is of the most anxious collies I’ve ever met. He desperately needs to burn off some energy but he is so triggered by everything in the outside world that he really struggles to focus when he is out as he is always in panic mode.
Yesterday we managed to find a quiet patch in the woods with no one around and he showed me we can have fun together on a walk 🥰.
When a dog is having fun they are capable of doing amazing things. I think we have found his joy, so we will keep working and building on this. Although it looks like I might have to get a bit fitter to keep up with him!!
My brilliant travelling companion, Dhala is absolutely loving our trip to Northumberland, especially the empty beaches!
She’s a bit bored of castles now though, and doesn’t even bother to get out of the campervan when I make yet another stop to look around 😂 🐾❤️
Little Nova showing off her newly acquired recall skills this week 🥰.
Start teaching recall with them on a long line until they learn what to do, then build up to dropping the long line in safe places. You can always pick up the line again if you are approaching exciting distractions where you think they might forget to listen 😜.
Where possible, train with good role models (in this case Otto and Dhala were very happy to share the cocktail sausages!) so that you set your dog up for success. Repeat repeat repeat!
Bonnie’s first time on the beach today 🥰
Here’s a fun little game that might help if your dog pulls like a train on a lead.
Yesterday on our walk, Bonnie was out front pulling on the long line and paid very little attention to me. So later that day, we went out played this game for 10 mins (I probably looked like a crazy person in the churchyard 😂).
Well it was a totally different walk with her today, she was regularly checking where I was and when she got to the end of the long line she came back to me. Much more pleasant for everyone 😊
