Puppy classes & why they're not helping your dog...

Now before I go on in this post I want to put a caveat out there... This is not all puppy classes, unfortunately there is a huge number that cause some concern and I'll tell you why!

The format of a lot of these classes is usually perpetrated by the idea of teaching, sit, down, give paw and look commands... which admittedly are all important things to teach our dogs..

However anyone can teach a dog to sit or down at any age, anyone can lure a peice of food to their face for a watch me command... the question is what SHOULD these classes be focusing on with young dogs that they simply are not?

For me 1-2-1 training is absolutely leagues ahead of the class format and especially for puppies.. a tailored plan to your individual dog is so crucial because your dog is (after all) and individual, with individual needs and requirements.

Puppy's should be focusing on the fundamentals of being a dog, not doing tricks! You simply do not get your socialisation window back; you have about 6-8 weeks of prime socialisation time with a young dog then it's gone!

Puppy classes often sell this idea of "let the dogs just rag around and play for 30 minutes, to socialise them." Which shows they have absolutely no idea what socialising an animal actually means!

To teach the animal to be neutral, walk around without caring about other dogs or people as THAT is what you'll expect as the dog gets older!

People who've been going to these classes almost always struggle with their dogs pulling upto other dogs, barrier frustration or just a simple lack of exposure because everyone spends all their time training in some community hall instead of in busy environments getting the pup used to them!

This of course is one man's opinion and I'm certain that there will be people reading this saying "my pup went to classes and she's fine!" And that's totally alright!

What I'm talking about is how to produce an excellent dog, not a "fine" dog..

So Tanks week away is over and he's going home today ❤️ I can honestly say he's been a pleasure and while working on his confidence with dogs and strangers he has taken a massive step forward! I can't wait to see how much further he progresses.

I have a lot of experience with a multitude of animals; their training and their care ranging from horses to rodents so I can guarantee your pet will be treated like my own. I am looking to progress into the professional training industry so building trust and experience is a must so hopefully this will go some way towards both.

Today me, Maiya and Princess went to meet tank the chihuahua cross Yorkshire terrier puppy.

Tank (blue coat) is a very reactive and scared puppy, he is scared of most people and dogs so we’ve been doing meets with my girls to build his confidence. Today we took him to an enclosed area where the owner was worried how he’d react when she dropped the lead, but he did perfectly! He interacted with both Maiya and “the stranger” and after a few corrections he wanted to play but he seemed to take a particular liking towards Princess.
