Here Tilly is showing what a good sniff walk entails. A sniff walk essentially is letting your dog sniff around to their hearts content and allowing them to take the lead on a walk. This is so, so important for a dogs mental stimulation, and you’ll notice that afterwards they seem just as, if not more tired than they would having a frenzied walk. Just simply follow your dog where they lead you, don’t call them away if they stop to sniff, let them just be dogs. This is extra important for working dogs, like Tilly here. She’s a Weimaraner, bred to hunt game. However the breed has evolved to track, hunt, point and retrieve. So letting the breed do what their instincts are telling them to do (within reason), is extremely beneficial as you can surely imagine. Think of your dog as a data analyst, each scent they catch a hold of, their brain is going a mile a minute analysing endless amounts of that data. They can detect wild animals, other dogs, what sex that dog is, how old they are, what their mood is, how far away they are and their mating probability. Amazing! Allowing them to do this has a calming, self soothing effect, and can reduce anxiety and stress in some dogs. Highly recommend for all dog owners 💯
