🆘 Safety Saturday 🆘
BHS South Region - interesting note on modern baler twine.

Today's tip... baler twine! Did you know modern baler twine can easily have a breaking strain of 500kg ⚖️ or even more? We conventionally use baler twine to provide a weak point that can break in an emergency, instead of tying a horse to a fixed point... but this strength 💪 means my entire 15hh horse 🐴 could hang from it before it'd break and he'd have to put some serious effort in to snapping it, potentially doing himself some damage in the process 💥!

There are numerous devices on the market such as the Tether Tie (https://www.britishhorseshop.com/collections/tether-ties/products/idolo-tether-tie) that can be used in place of baler twine but for a cheap and cheerful cheat simply split the twine and tie up to a thinner piece!

The Idolo Tether Tie is a unique, knotless, tying system that helps teach your horse to tie safely. It is easy to use, supplied with a double ended trigger clip and simple to follow instructions. The tie comes in various colours. This lightweight, strong, versatile tying aid is a valuable asset to a...

I was very amused today. I thought I spotted a dod of poo and nearly scooped this wee fellow up. He was just the right shade of brown.

Nemo was very pleased that Glen was able to walk far enough for to visit today. And a carrot or two went down well too.

**IMPACTION COLIC**. A useful reminder

This time of year marks changes in many horses' routines, including reduced turnout and therefore less exercise and access to pasture. In combination with freezing water buckets/drinkers when the temperature drops, we see reduced water intake and occasionally this results in colic due to impacted faeces.

**The Facts**

- Clinical signs include pawing the ground, flank watching, increased time lying down, reduced faecal output and straining to pass faeces

- Diagnosis is by re**al palpation. You're horse will be given buscopan +/- sedation to allow the vet to safely perform a re**al exam

- The most common part of the digestive system for an impaction to occur is the pelvic flexure as this is a narrowed region within the large colon

- Mainstay of treatment is oral fluid therapy performed by passing a tube into your horse's stomach via their nose whilst under sedation. Once the tube is in place they will be given a combination of water and either liquid paraffin or epsom salts to help soften and move the impaction. This may need repeated up to 4 times daily for a few days.

- Prevention methods are simple and include providing forage at regular intervals and daily exercise if horses are stabled 24/7, ensuring water is always available and encouraging drinking by providing salt licks and warm water in freezing conditions.
