As Autumn Arrives, Watch Out for Lameness in Soft Ground!

Now we are finally having cooler, wetter weather, the ground is getting softer. This can put extra strain on your horse’s joints and soft tissues.

Here’s what to watch for:

Joint Strain: Soft footing means more work for joints, increasing the risk of inflammation
Soft Tissue Injuries: Tendons and ligaments can get overstretched on uneven, wet ground
Hoof Health: Wet conditions soften hooves, making them more vulnerable to bruising and infections

As the seasons change, adjust your horse’s exercise and keep a close eye on their movement to keep them comfortable and sound.

Have any questions? We’re here to help!🐎💚

Quick Tip: How to Take Your Horse’s Temperature

Knowing your horse’s normal, resting temperature is key to spotting health issues early! Here’s a simple step-by-step to take it safely and accurately:

- Use a clean digital thermometer
- Apply some lubricant (like petroleum jelly) to the tip
- Gently lift their tail—stand to the side, never directly behind the horse for safety
- Slowly insert the thermometer about 2-3 inches into the re**um, then gently - push it up against the side of the re**um
- Hold it steady until it beeps (usually 30-60 seconds)
- Slowly insert the thermometer about 2-3 inches into the re**um, then gently push it up against the side of the re**um

Normal horse temperature: 98.6°F to 100.8°F (37.0°C to 38.2°C). If it’s higher or lower, call your vet on 01258 452626🐎💚

The ACTH test is the primary method to diagnose PPID (Cushing’s disease). A blood sample, collected and sent to a lab under chilled conditions, analyses ACTH levels. Elevated ACTH levels beyond the normal range indicate PPID in horses.

ACTH levels vary seasonally, especially in summer and autumn. While autumn is typically recommended for testing due to these fluctuations, testing can occur year-round if a horse shows symptoms or health concerns arise.

If you have any suspicion that your horse may have PPID, then please give us a call on 01258 452626 🐎💚

As autumn approaches, the risk of Atypical Myopathy rises, a devastating muscle disease that can strike horses suddenly and without warning. The disorder stems from eating sycamore seeds, seedlings and leaves. When eaten, they release a toxin that causes significant muscle weakness and damage.

What to look out for:
❕Sudden stiffness or weakness
❕Difficulty standing or walking
❕Muscle trembling or sweating
❕Dark, discoloured urine

If you notice any of these signs, contact your vet immediately. Early intervention can save lives.

How to reduce risk:
✅ Avoid grazing where sycamore trees may be present or nearby
✅ Remove fallen seeds and leaves from grazing areas
✅ Fence off access to areas of sycamore trees or where seeds fall
✅ Seeds and seedlings can be tested to see how strong the toxins are

Should you suspect Atypical Myopathy, promptly seek veterinary assistance by contacting us on 01258 452626.🐎🌱

Providing a faecal sample for worm egg counts (WEC) is crucial for your horse's health. Here's how to do it right:

1. Collect fresh dung from each horse individually
2. Mix small samples from different parts of the pile
3. Place a small handful in a labelled bag, removing as much air as possible
4. Store in a cool place; refrigerate if delayed
5. Get the sample to us as soon as possible

Ensure accurate results and your horse’s health with proper collection and handling.🐎💚

Have you weighed your horse recently?

Many horse owners estimate weight, but even the best guess can be off by 10–20%! Regular weigh-ins using a weighbridge or weight tape help you keep your horse in peak condition all year round.

Ask us about weight checks at your next visit or give us a call to find out more.🐎💚
