As temperatures drop, your horse’s muscles and joints may feel stiffer. Here’s how to help them stay comfortable and active:

🐎 Warm up properly – gentle walking and stretching before more intense work
❄️ Check footing – avoid icy or uneven surfaces that could cause slips or injuries
🦴 Support joint health – ask your vet about targeted care for your horse
🧘 Cool down & stretch – help muscles relax after exercise to prevent stiffness

Regular, safe movement is key to keeping your horse happy and mobile this season.

πŸ“ž Contact us if you notice persistent stiffness or lameness – early intervention makes all the difference.

🐴New Strangles Vaccine (Strangvac) Now Available

There has been considerable discussion recently surrounding the new Strangles vaccine (Strangvac).

😷 About Strangles
Strangles is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection in horses.
Clinical signs can include nasal discharge, high temperature, and coughing.

πŸ’‰ About the Vaccine
The Strangvac vaccine helps to reduce the severity of clinical signs and decrease the number of lymph node abscesses.
The primary course consists of two injections, given four weeks apart, with peak immunity achieved two weeks after the second dose.

⚠️ Adverse Reactions
There may be a higher incidence of mild reactions compared to some routine vaccines (such as influenza).
These can include a temporary increase in temperature and mild soreness at the injection site.

🎁 National Amnesty Offer
Dechra, the manufacturer of Strangvac, is offering a national amnesty to encourage vaccine uptake and support herd immunity.
Horses receiving their first dose by 08/12/2025 will be eligible for a second dose free of charge.
(Standard visit or call-out fees still apply.)

πŸ“ž Find Out More
Please contact our practice on 01258 452626 and speak with one of our vets to discuss the vaccine further and determine whether it is suitable for your horse.

🐴✨ Mini Donkey Dental Day! ✨🐴

Our vet Jen had the absolute pleasure of visiting four very cute mini donkeys this week for their routine dental check-ups! πŸ¦·πŸ’š

Because of their tiny mouths, Jen used a special mini burr to gently smooth out any sharp enamel points and make sure their teeth were balanced and comfortable.

Did you know? πŸ€”
Routine dentistry is just as important for donkeys as it is for horses. Regular checks help prevent sharp edges, ulcers, and uneven wear β€” keeping them happy, healthy, and in great condition! 🫏🌿

These little patients were total superstars for their treatment βπŸ‘

πŸ‚ Autumn is Tapeworm Treatment Time! 🐴

Now that the grazing season is ending, it’s the ideal time to treat your horse for tapeworms.
Why now? ⬇️
πŸͺ± The intermediate host in the tapeworm life cycle is no longer active
βœ… Treating now clears existing infections
🚫 Prevents new infestations before winter

πŸ“‰ Just like with redworm, we should also be working to reduce resistance to tapeworm treatments.
πŸ’‘ The ideal approach? Test before you treat.
πŸ§ͺ A simple saliva test (which we can supply) can show if your horse needs medication β€” a blood test is also available.

Let’s make worming smarter, not just routine.

πŸ“ž Contact us on 01258 452626 to discuss testing or to get your horse’s treatment sorted!πŸ’š

πŸ’‰ Vaccination Explained: What Vaccines Do Horses Need & Why?

Keeping your horse healthy means protecting them from serious diseases β€” and vaccinations are key!
Here’s a quick guide to essential vaccines every horse should have:

🦠 Tetanus
- Caused by bacteria found in soil
- Even a small wound can be dangerous
- Vaccination protects against this life-threatening infection

🌑️ Equine Influenza (Flu)
- Highly contagious and fast-spreading
- Can cause fever, coughing, and lethargy
- Regular flu vaccinations help keep your horse safe and prevent outbreaks

🧠 Equine Herpesvirus (EHV)
- Can cause respiratory illness
- May lead to neurological disease
- Can result in abortion in pregnant mares

πŸ“… Keeping up with booster schedules is vital to maintain protection.

🐴 Is Your Horse Ready for Winter?

Autumn is the perfect time to schedule a dental check-up before winter sets in and your horse has to rely more heavily on forage. Identifying and addressing dental issues now helps ensure your horse stays comfortable, maintains condition, and performs at their best throughout the colder months.

🦷 Routine dental care every 6–12 months helps to:

🍽️ Improve chewing and digestion
⚠️ Prevent sharp points and mouth ulcers
🐎 Improve comfort in the bridle
πŸ” Catch issues early, before they affect health or performance

At Damory Vets, we use modern equipment, including a mini burr, that allows us to treat even the smallest ponies and donkeys comfortably and thoroughly.

πŸ’š Let us help keep your horse happy, healthy, and performing at their best this winter.

As Autumn Arrives, Watch Out for Lameness in Soft Ground!

Now we are finally having cooler, wetter weather, the ground is getting softer. This can put extra strain on your horse’s joints and soft tissues.

Here’s what to watch for:

Joint Strain: Soft footing means more work for joints, increasing the risk of inflammation
Soft Tissue Injuries: Tendons and ligaments can get overstretched on uneven, wet ground
Hoof Health: Wet conditions soften hooves, making them more vulnerable to bruising and infections

As the seasons change, adjust your horse’s exercise and keep a close eye on their movement to keep them comfortable and sound.

Have any questions? We’re here to help!πŸŽπŸ’š
