We were invited by Lorraine who runs Islay Dog Rescue to train some of her group on Canine First Aid 🥰

They were a fun bunch to teach and clearly very caring about the dogs under their care.

They have some amazing dogs that are looking for their right home 😚 was hard for me to not walk away with them all

But for now the dogs are in the best hands and care 🥰🥰

A win for The Kennel Club today. 🏆

Westminster has announced the ban on Electric Shock Collars starting from Feb 2024 in England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

This is a huge step in animal welfare.🏆💪

Following behind Wales who introduced the ban in 2010 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The Kennel Club will continue the fight to have the ban introduced in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This is a risky post but it needs to be said!

🏆Today was a good day!🏆

Today a client asked me about trainers and balanced training.🤔

My nursie senses went on high alert and I asked them if they were referring to shock/prong collars. Yes!🤦‍♀️

This pup is lovely, friendly and really fun to exam. 🐶

❓️I have had a lot of clients ask me if it was right for a trainer to demand their pups wear prong/shock collars if they are attending their classes.

🙏Thankfully these guys have all been diverted to more ethical trainers and I feel I have saved a life and given the owners more understanding of the harm these can cause.

🚨I have seen injuries such as below and yes those clients claim to have been "properly trained"

❌️I have had clients come in with their dogs with these collars on and made my stand that if they didn't remove the collar I wouldn't continue with the consultation.

⚠️ I stand by this.

⚠️ I always will.

⚠️ Dogs have the right to express themselves.

Puppies should most certainly never have to be exposed to these devices.

The world shines a little less brighter today, with the news of the sad passing of Paul O'Grady 😔

I have so many fond memories watching "for the love of dogs" and "The Paul O'Grady Show" with even winning my own little nodding Buster 🐶

I am sure Buster was wagging his tail waiting to meet him at rainbow bridge 🌈

Sleep tight Mr O'Grady x the world will miss you dearly 😔

I have to say I love reactive dogs!

I love their characters especially when you get to know them! 🥰 and see what they can over come.

Even more than this I love people we come across whilst out on a dog walk with reactive dogs.

Hubby was on it walking ahead warning people that there are dog reactive dogs in our group and people were so considerate and understanding and thankful they were made aware but knew that we wanted to keep everyone safe but able to enjoy the walk without judgement 🥰

Communication makes all the difference for both handers and owners of reactive dogs and for the general public.

All in all a successful doggo walk with a new friend for this fur group 🥰

Stirling Dog Behavioural Centre gave me the confidence and skill set to walk my own reactive guy anywhere and the confidence to help my friends walk their reactive doggos too 😊

Fair and honest point.

Some insurance companies won't cover illnesses that are vaccinated against if your dog isn't up to date with their vaccines.

🦠Leptospirois: Myth Busting Series

4️⃣ Myth: Leptospirosis is easily treated.

➡️Leptospirosis is a disease spread via a bacteria called Leptospira

➡️Leptospirosis has been classified by the BSAVA (British Small Animal Veterinary Association) as a core vaccine – one that all dogs should receive, regardless of circumstances or geographical location.

➡️The purpose of vaccination is to protect individual animals and populations of animals from lethal or disease-producing infections.
Some infections are zoonotic e.g shared with humans.

➡️Leptospirosis carries a zoonotic risk and control of the disease in the animal population is a means of limiting human infection.

❌ Veterinary professionals encounter misinformation about leptospirosis vaccination that can be worrying given the potential for both animal and human health implications

✅We are going to write a series of posts to help ease the minds of owners who may have come across misinformation online and want to know more.

❌ Myth:Leptospirosis is easily treated, you don't have to worry about it.

➡️It is often cited that a quick course of antibiotics is enough to treat leptospirosis in dogs.

➡️Although it is true that dogs with leptospirosis are recommended a minimum 14 day course of antibiotic, this is rarely the only treatment these cases receive given the hepatic and renal involvement and severity of the disease.

➡️Dogs commonly require hospitalisation, intravenous fluid therapy, analgesia, intensive nursing care, anti-emetics, anti-hypertensives, and nutritional support. In severe cases with pulmonary injury they may even require oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation.

➡️ Devastatingly dogs are often extremely sick, with multiple organ failure and have to be humanly euthanised. This is extremely upsetting for both the owners and veterinary professionals.

On member on Veterinary Voices reflects on a case:
💬One case I particularly remember survived but required a feeding tube, a weeks hospitalisation and very intense barrier nursing.
After she went home, she had weekly blood tests to monitor kidney and liver parameters for around 8 weeks. Very expensive for the owner, compared to vaccinating. Also, not covered by insurance, as she was not vaccinated and it’s a preventable disease.

➡️Dogs presenting with kidney injury associated with leptospirosis can take months to recover and in approximately 50 per cent of dogs impairment persists for more than one year. This will incur veterinary costs for ongoing treatment and monitoring of the animals renal health.

🗳️When polled 100% of veterinary professionals from Veterinary Voices UK agreed that Leptospirosis was not easy to treat and often requires intensive care or euthanasia.
