Flies Flies Flies

Fed up with treating bad eyes over the summer, cows fidgeting in the parlour, increased mastitis rates and getting bitten while you milk? NOW is the time to act and reduce the number of flies bothering cattle on your farm.

The Cornwall Dairy Vets 4 point plan to controlling flies on your farm this year.

1. Make your cows less attractive to the flies. Fly repellent not only discourages flies it can also kill flies on contact so get in there early and it will help reduce their numbers on your farm

2. Reduce the rate that flies breed on your farm with the use of biological control. We used on a number of our farms last season and have started again this month to reduce the rate that flies build up on the holdings by allowing the parasitic wasps to kill the fly pupae before they hatch out

3. Attract the flies away from your cows with use of “Attracter buckets”. These are placed close by your housed cattle or calves in direct sunlight or as they enter your parlour from the fields. They act like a lobster pot where flies are attracted in by a smelly bait and cannot come out. This helps to draw flies away from your stock and housing

4. Reduce fly breeding areas on your farm. Store manure piles as far away from stock as possible to reduce fly breeding sites on your farm.

Clearly a very stressful day for the staff at Kivells Agriculture aswell as the farmers affected by this situation and very well handled indeed!

Confirmation that the sheep from last weeks market tested NEGATIVE for both Foot and Mouth as well as Blue tongue so business at usual thank goodness!
