Better late than never......

Our Royal Cornwall Show competition for guess the amount of cows in the yard...

The answer was... 412!

Well done to the two winners who guessed 412 exactly and the next best at 410 😮 ... Better luck next year to those who guessed over 1000 🙈

Both of our winners have been contacted.

Owner found! Left on our stand at the Royal Cornwall Show.. can we manage to find its owner? 🤞🤞

How it works...The packets of Biowasp’s are dispersed around the farm every 2 weeks, they hatch within a few days and reproduce themselves by laying their eggs inside pupae of nuisance flies which stops the development of the fly.

We have orders arriving 2 weekly for clients so let us know if you are interested 🪰🪰

“Calving cows, spotting bulling behaviour and practical cow feeding tips”
Last night, Phil Dawber hosted a meeting with Launceston YFC to show them a little bit of what we do at Cornwall Dairy Vets, hopefully teaching them a few useful techniques for use on their farms whilst having a laugh in the process!

Bluetongue has been confirmed in a single animal near Canterbury in Kent and due to this a 10km control zone has been put in place to minimise spread whilst further surveillance is carried out.

Bluetongue is spread by the Culicodes midge which can be spread / blown up to 200km. With the recent reports of Bluetongue in Belgium and Netherlands it’s likely that this has been spread across the channel. Vigilance remains the priority to keep spread under control.

What should you look for?
· In general, sheep tend to show more signs than cattle
· Ulcers and swelling in the mouth
· Nasal and mouth discharge
· Swelling of the coronary band in sheep
· Swollen teats in cattle
· Red skin and eyes in cattle
· Depressed

If you have any concerns, please contact us as soon as possible so we can hopefully rule Bluetongue out or carry out the appropriate sampling and assessments.

Please remember, Bluetongue does not affect people or food safety.

*Bluetongue and EHDV*

Be aware that these two midge-spread notifiable diseases have been detected in close continental Europe, and farmers should be vigilant for the clinical signs in their stock. Signs include: fever, drooling, reddened skin, rashes, lesions in the mouth and teats as well as others.

A full list of clinical signs can be found at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bluetongue

Any suspicion of disease must be notified to DEFRA on 03000 200 301.

How to spot bluetongue, what to do if you suspect it and how to prevent it spreading.

🐮🐮Lungworm look out🐮🐮

Bovine Lungworm causes infection of the respiratory tract in cattle. Outbreaks of lungworm are unpredictable, but disease typically affects young cattle during their first grazing season during the later summer months and into autumn.

Low level exposure to lungworm larvae allows the animal to develop an immunity to re-infection. This means that older animals are generally lower risk for the disease.

We have seen cases of Lungworm this season already so be on the look out for the common signs:
➼ Frequent bouts of coughing
➼ Mouth breathing/difficulty breathing
➼ Weight loss
➼ Increased respiratory rate
➼ Air hunger positions with head and neck outstretched
➼ Fever (if a secondary bacterial infection occurs)
