Finally the evenings are becoming light enough to get a little bit of training in after work… soon, so soon it will be warmer and more comfortable to spend time outside getting the dogs into shape for tests, trials and picking up again.
Harley aka Colquite Winnie the Pooh. This absolute tank of a dog was by far the biggest of the last litter but such a gentle kind soul. His owner has never trained a Gundog before but just for fun decided to have a go with this handsome chap. Now at nearly two years old he’s doing so well and had his first days picking up last season, he was calm, well mannered and a keen hunter and is a real credit to his dad.
Happy Monday everyone. I cant believe we only have 4 weeks left to go before these little beauties go off to their new homes, it’s going so fast 😢

MP and mamma Chip having a bit of playtime in the garden. Chip is more than happy to leave the pups now, she’s doing such a brilliant job with them and it’s been quite interesting to see how she’s been allot more competent and thorough with her second litter. I guess I feel the same, it feels allot easier this time now I know what to expect.
Apologies to anyone who tried to contact me in the past week, but I’m a firm believer in completely switching off from anything work related when I’m taking a break, I like to be as off grid as I can, no social media, no thinking about work and as much as possible focusing entirely on the present moment.
It’s been a strange few years, with lots of change and upheaval for everyone but I feel this week has been incredibly restorative for me personally and maybe even a teensy bit life changing.
I’ve made so many new friends, human and animal, I’ve seen some beautiful places and more importantly met some beautiful souls who have helped throw a new perspective on life and have helped me see things with new clarity.
Anyway it’s back to reality today, I’ve got some catching up to do, but please get in touch again if I’ve missed anyone out, I’m feeling fully refreshed and ready to give you all my best again ❤️🥳😁🍍⛵️🏝
Good friends are a bit like cushions. Comfortable to relax with, supportive when you need them most, and often right by your side, even if you don’t always notice them.
I’ve been thinking about this girl a lot today, I’ve planted a whole bunch of spring bulbs on her grave. It’s kind of nice because every time I walk the dogs round the paddock we go right past her, so she’s never really alone. It still feels horribly strange to think I’ll not see her lovely old face again though 😓
A dear friend and Gundog trainer once said to me that a Labrador is like a beautiful piece of pliable clay, and that with a bit of skill and know how you can mould it into whatever you want to. She then went on to say that my Labrador was more like a hard piece of granite and I would just have to keep chipping away and see where I got with it.
That was Juno, my first proper Gundog and the one responsible for the start of my journey into shooting, picking up and field sports, perhaps the most important thing to me in my life today. She taught me so much, introduced me to so many new people and places and more or less changed the entire course of my life if you think about it.
Sleep tight dearest most treasured friend, I will always think of you fondly and with so much appreciation for all you gave, always smile at your tenacity, and laugh at your stubbornness, you will be so so missed.

So this should have been my busiest week of the year, getting everyone spruced up and looking their best for the big day. As it turns out Covid had other ideas and as a result I’ve had to cancel over 70 appointments and have spent the past 10 days laid up at home feeling absolutely horrendous.
I just want to thank everyone who has offered support, helped out with dropping things off, posting things for me and generally been there to cheer me up and boost my mood. I also can’t thank all my wonderful clients enough for being so understanding and kind when I’ve had to let you down last minute with appointments, everyone’s been so lovely and I can’t wait to see you all as soon as I’m well again.
Bee’s first bath. Not because she needed a wash but just so she could learn about being bathed. Labs, like most double coated breeds need the occasional bath as adults just to help loosen and remove dead coat when they’re shedding, so it’s a great idea to start them young and get them used to it while they’re small and easily handled. Bee was a little unsure but behaved herself and was soon dry and behaving like a little fuzzy terrorist again.
Sorry if I’ve not replied to voicemails/texts the last few days. I’ve been away for a few days visiting some very special people and attending the wedding of a dear friend. I’ll be back in the salon today so will get back to you all this morning 🙂

A word on nail clipping. Did you know that we offer nail clipping as a stand alone service, but also clip the nails on all dogs booked in for a bath or full groom. Many dogs at the moment aren’t getting the same amount of walking that they would normally get and as a result their nails aren’t wearing down as fast. Older dogs run less and as a result their nails might need checking more regularly than they did as a youngster. Overly long nails cause damage to floors, skin and clothing, they can also get easily caught in something and harm the dog. One thing many people don’t realise though is that when a nail grows really long it puts pressure on the toe joins, twisting them out of position in extreme cases, this in turn alters the way your pet walks and will begin to affect other joints further up the leg. I clip my own dogs claws at least every 8 weeks, more with the puppy who doesn’t walk as far yet. Do get in contact if you are worried about your pets nails, we can normally tell from a photo if they need doing and don’t recommend trying to do them yourself as there is a very sensitive blood source in the nail called the quick, and once cut this not only hurts like hell but will also bleed profusely.

Day off today to help out at Windsor horse show. Riding for the disabled, Newbury are taking part in the fancy dress competition and I have been roped in to help out with a bit of creative grooming on one of their beautiful ponies, Flossie! Wish us luck :))
Don't forget we do tooth cleaning too. Here's a before and a after of carby's teeth today. It costs just £5 and most dogs don't even mind having it done :-D
7 month old Spanish rescue Messi was a really really good boy for us today. He's never been groomed before but took it all in his stride. It was a pleasure to meet such a sweet and well behaved young dog :)
