Grass should be the main source of our horses’ diet right? It’s natural, it’s what they’re bred for. Unfortunately, too much sugar from grass may not be the best thing for our beloved companions.

❔ Did you know?

☀️ Grass uses sunlight during the daytime to photosynthesise and create energy in the form of non-structural carbohydrates (starch and sugars). During the day when the sun is out these sugars are used up as the grass grows meaning sugar does not accumulate.

🌙 During the night time the grass does not grow as there is no sun and therefore the sugar is stored. This means there is more sugar in each blade of grass during the night than during the daytime.

🕛️ Studies have shown that sugars are highest during the evening, not reducing until hours after sunset, and lowest during the early hours of the morning until a few hours after sunrise. This pattern is important to consider for our horses which are at risk of laminitis for example those with EMS or those which have suffered laminitis previously.
