Strange picture for dog training but stick with it 😂

Training dogs and people is not like flicking some magic light switch. Over the years we have met people not just in business but out and about that are looking for this magic switch.

When we as dog enthusiasts, dog trainers I mean myself, my fellow trainers get dogs we have a plan
🐶what do we want from this dog? Right at the start of that list is well socialised, friendly, walks nice on lead, comes back to me

To be honest this is what most people want and actually need to get enjoyment out of there dogs whether they plan to do agility, obedience, scent work or any other sport they still want these foundations.
There are a lot of dog owners out there that think that because I got a certain breed it should just automatically do all of the above naturally. Some breeds are easier to train this is true and also genetics plays a big part but that’s another story for another time. All in all a dog won’t naturally just walk beside you it needs your time and patience to teach it allow them to make choices and be happy when it makes the right choices and support them when they make wrong ones.
We send our kids to nursery, school, college and universities it takes on average 20 years for a human to gain the foundations to prepare them for life. Dogs brains never really develop any further than age 5 in human intellect but we expect them to learn and do things a lot quicker within unrealistic timeframes. Yes I’m included in that sometimes I move to fast for my dogs and my expectations are too high but when I realise I give myself a shake a slow it all down.

We don’t expect are children to come home after a week of primary 1 and be able to do long division. Don’t have unrealistic expectations for your dog.
Enjoy the experience
Let your dog enjoy the experience
Find a trainer you click with
Gain the knowledge use the skills you learn
Be patient

Long story short there is no magic switch, make a plan, stick to it, put in the work and you and your dog will get there.

Good morning

We are looking at running a class on a Friday evening. This class has been designed for dogs that have completed our indoor classes, have the majority of the basics and would like to work their dogs in an outdoor environment that is full of distractions. The outdoor location we use is the runfree fields at Hardengreen these are used regularly by dog walkers so the field has lots of smells, we are also next to a fast busy road which the dogs can hear and foot traffic is quite busy as there are multiple paths that pass the field.
The class will be held on a Friday evening 7pm for 1 hour. It will be a block of 6 at the cost of £60.
If you have trained your dog elsewhere but you would like to have a go at training in a new environment this may be the class for you.
I have a couple of people interested but will only run a class with a minimum of 6. Training exercises we will cover loose lead walking, recall around distractions, impulse control, stays, settle these are just some.
Message me if interested booking is required

Camping with your dogs

As some of you that have been to our classes will be aware we talk a lot about small incremental exposure to new stimuli in this case the exposure is to camping.
We’re currently in Northumberland camping in a tent we’re actually camping for the next nine nights 10 including last night.
When I first took my dogs camping I only did it for two nights but prior to going when I built the tent in the garden to air it the dogs where allowed to wander in and out it we also gave them lickimats inside it so that they where consistently rewarded for being in there feeling and hearing the rustle of the ground sheet and other noises, smells and textures that a tent has.
They probably won’t get used to the sound of rain hitting the tent until it happens we’ve just had a downpour here as you can see the door is open giving the dogs the opportunity to go into our windbreaker garden. We also have banging happening in the distance and I have a sound sensitive dog. I love the fact that he likes the tent and feels safe enough in here to not be bothered.
As with everything take everything slow and at your dogs pace my youngest dog ash did struggle when we where getting ready to leave to come here she had a bit of a runny belly any significant upheaval can cause a bit of anxiety as it can with us don’t worry take it as easy as you can with them.
As you can see from pics below my dogs are pretty chilled it’s currently pouring with rain and very noisy in tent no problem.
Hope your enjoying your weekend

Good morning folks

This little dog went missing yesterday this is not that far from areas like gorebridge, north Middleton, borthwick castle, pathhead and mayfield. Little dog has been missing since yesterday. Can all people keep an eye out, if you were in your shed yesterday have a wee check and if out walking keep your eyes peeled.
Can everyone please keep an eye out for the below dog. She has gone missing with another dog walker at the back of Vogrie park (closest to Crichton side) she has a pink lead attached to her. Can be quite nervous. If any sightings please contact Kelly on 07887535407

Graduation night for our beginners class.
Some of these dogs also attended our puppy class and it was lovely to see them back continuing their training journey with us.
It was lovely to also see some new faces in this class some slightly older dogs getting into the basics. All dogs absolutely smashed it week in week out we seen major improvement, seeing real focus on their owner in a highly distracting environment around other dogs.
The more work you put into training your dog the more you get out we can’t ever say this enough.
Well done ❤️

Graduation night at our puppy class last Tuesday. These puppers and owners have done so well. Owning a puppy is not easy but by taking your puppy to a class is a step in the right direction. It is so lovely for myself and Theresa in any class seeing dogs and handlers choosing to make the right choices and seeing how much they come on each week.
Well done all ❤️

Our current puppy class and their handlers are doing a fantastic job. In this weeks class we had a range of different stimuli ranging from carpet which not everyone has these days to kids toys, umbrellas and dollys. All pups and their handlers did a fantastic job. It is so important to check out how your puppy responds to different stimuli whether that be something they can feel underneath their paws, something they can see, hear or smell. It’s always best to introduce new stimuli slowly you may see the snuffle mats on the floor if the pups where really unsure of one of the stimuli we took them over to snuffle mats for a sniff and some food allowing the pups to investigate on their own terms and not forcing them to be ok around things that may startle them is key to their learning. ❤️
