Happy Christmas everybody, the diary is now closed for training until 2025.

2024 wasn't as outstanding as I had hoped due to personal circumstances, yet still many happy clients and I'm grateful for each of you.

Have you ever seen a photo or video of a dog wearing a harness and they aren't pulling?

Yes, most likely.

If harnesses caused pulling, you would never see one of these images or videos because the dog would start pulling immediately, as soon as they were harnessed if they did..

Why then, do people think they do?

Lack of knowledge and education is the primary reason, but also a reliance on equipment which stops pulling through pain/discomfort.

You see, prong collars and slip leads cause pain. The dog walks next to us in order to avoid/escape the pain caused by the device. The understanding of the next part is a false dichotomy - if the prong collar stops pulling, then everything else must cause it (plus - sLEd dOgS pULl sO tHeY mUSt cAuSe it). Some critical analysis and reading a book on behaviour might help (might, because some people's beliefs get in the way of logic and evidence - ask flat earthers and climate change deniers).

Why a harness? It's easier on the dog (yes, there are exceptions, no need to highlight it, we know). Harnesess take all pressure off the dog's neck.

Let's be part of the global, cultural shifts to stop restraining dogs by their necks.

I've been a little slow on the social media front these days. I do get lots of positive feedback but this team have worked particularly hard and I'm very proud of what they have achieved.

I just want to say thank you to all guardians / owners who recognise they need help and put the effort in to making positive changes. This demonstrates how anything is possible with hard work and consistency.

A lot of my role tends to be helping to breakdown barriers of communication and to understand things from your dog's perspective . The rest tends to fall in to place after this.

Dinner is served! 😋🤔💡

I've recently had a few clients where dissection behaviours (nibbling and biting clothes, pulling stuffing from toys and destroying corners of cushions) is becoming an undesirable behaviour.

Contrary to what you may have been told or read, ignoring this type of behaviour is only likely to make it worse. Your dog is actually communicating with you and often letting you know what they want or need.

This is quite normal for most dogs to enjoy the act of dissecting, but for some dogs they really NEED it so embrace it, find ways to meet their needs in a positive way so they don't manifest into problem behaviours.

Below is a great inexpensive way to meet the need to dissect and is highly rewarding for most. I'm often advising my clients to find other ways to deliver their dogs food rather than in a bowl and this ✅️ the 📦. Make it easy and fun, never frustrating.

It is great fun watching them pull it apart and once the game is understood, you could even hide the ball to make it more difficult and meet even more of your dogs needs!

🚨 You should supervise your dog at ALL times and may not be appropriate for those dogs who have a tendency to ingest🚨

🔹 **1:1 Training Sessions** - £50ph Sessions can take place at home, on a walk, or in a secure environment. I generally work within a 5-mile radius, but I do travel further for complex cases (assessments and extra travel costs may apply).

I take your dog out and implement the required training. Perfect for those short on time. Note: This approach may take longer and will require handover sessions.

No Dog is badly behaved, or naughty!
It isn't possible.

People are often confused when I say this.

Dogs learn through a history of reward and punishment or act on impulse. So, if there is something in it for the dog it is likely to perform that behaviour again.

Let's consider this in context of a scenario.

A dog that jumps up to greet people.

Owner walks in the door > dog jumps up > we stroke and greet > dog chooses to jump next time

Now to flip your mind, from the dogs perspecrive the following could be the same..

Owner walks in the house > dog jumps up > owner pushes dog down and shouts at it > dog enjoys the physical contact and bark (vocalisation)> dog chooses to jump up again next time

Naughty dog ☝️👀 or... naughty owner 😊

There are many solutions to these seemingly naughty behaviours, but we have to think more like a dog 🐕
