Learn with your dog, is dog training for people and their dogs. All of us want to enjoy our dogs, but sometimes if your dog is getting mixed messages, they get frustrated and challenging. Most of these behaviours are created by people, some by a dogs natural drives. All dogs need rewards, whether it be food, toys or just a need to please their owners. If that is not there then a dog will revert to

doing what pleases itself. Dogs grow really quickly, and they are dogs, not children. If they learn it right in the first place, it's easier to maintain, than to reteach an already learned behaviour. And a lot more fun. Socializing is training. In a perfect world we would all have polite social dogs, but we need to teach our dogs to be that way, it doesn't happen on it's own. I have been training my own dogs for over 35 yrs. Initially domestic training, and leading on to competitive obedience. I have been running classes for over 20 years, in one way and another. When I started,it was the yank and check days. Then came the puppy socializing, never say No days. I try to teach a happy medium. And if your dog is happy, it will be receptive. Which will lead on to a partnership that could take you forward to anything you want from your dog. Whether that be a well balanced pet, or a super duper competitive dog. Obedience is not compulsion, it is a progression of exercises which lead on to our dogs wanting to work with us in all walks of life. And the cornerstone of all the dog disciplines. If you want to do agility, flyball, Working trials, gundog work, obedience, search and rescue, schutzhund training, then your basics must be there first. And if you get an older dog, then you need to bond with them. Training is the best way to do that, and work in environment where you can both be safe, and not have unexpected surprises jump out on you. It should be a fun learning curve for all the family when you get a dog, and that is what I aim for when I help train your dog.

Impulse control is a must if your dog goes off lead. Every one is telling you that you have to have a reliable recall. If your pup is 50yds away, and these popped up in front of you, he'd probably be gone. If your dog is near you, and has a great leave, then you have a better chance of getting him back.
This fella was on a line from tiny. When something popped up, I was able to stand on the line, and reward him for leaving, and then as he got older he got a really good game for leaving, satisfying his urge to chase.
Just after this photo was taken, the deer took off, and then doubled back in front of us. If your pup doesn't learn how good the adrenaline rush of a chase is, then it's easier. But start young, and be consistent. If they have already learnt, it can be done, but consistency is the key. Dogs learn by repetition, don't let them repeat unwanted behaviour, and start out by teaching them leave on not so high value things, and then upgrade to the higher value stuff.

Why is my puppy potty?
Your pup doesn't need hrs of exercise every day to wear them out.
Your pup needs to learn to relax.
If you run your pups for hours, apart from it not being good for their growing joints, all you do is make them fitter, and more able to run further. And getting them overstimulated, which makes it difficult for them to settle.
If you have a high drive, excitable breed, then rather than run them, teach them with games, that will exercise their brains, and encourage them to chill. Terriers like to sniff and hunt. Working dogs need to have mental stimulation. Breed specific training is the way to wear them out, and scent training is brilliant for most. Scatter feeding for pups, and even older dogs is a fab way to slow them down, and utilise their hunting and searching drives.
Playing with other pups is fun, but can again overstimulate them, and as they get older lead to nervousness or aggression, depending on pup. So if you are using a daycare facility, choose carefully. They need to be supervised, and learn manners around other dogs. And if you have older dogs in the home, it is not their responsibility to teach your pup. That's your job. If I had a pound for every person that said, my dog needs to learn, but my older dog won't tell him off, I'd be retired by now. Your dog approaching others inappropriately, and being corrected by the wrong dog could create a lifetime of problems.
Walks should be interactive, especially as a pup. They learn in context. And if walk time is playing with other dogs, then as they get older they learn to ignore you on their walks. They get over excited on walks and chasing becomes more interesting, sadly wildlife run faster and further.
Please invest your time in your pups. Not just the first 6wks when you go to puppy classes, but until they are mature. And even then there are always going to be times that they could go self employed, around livestock possibly.
The more time you have invested in your dog, the better you will anticipate problems by being able to read them better, leading to a long relaxed relationship, enabling you both to enjoy your time together.
Enjoy your pups most of all.

One day he will grow into those ears! All the better to ignore you mum. Lol.
So when do you start training impulse control. As soon as possible!!!!
No point working on your pups prey drive when theyve found out how much fun a chase is, and what to chase. My pup at the moment is 19wks, and just discovered deer! There are loads where we walk. We have been working on the leave command on everything, including my poor big dog. And the latest thing to learn on is bumble bees. And lots of horse poo.
It needs to be exciting to come away from a moving target, and having a longer lead on them gives you the opportunity to just stand on the lead and reward, reward, reward, when you get a good response.
So this morning when 3 deer popped up right in front of us, and he started to go, I shouted No, leave, and he turned around. Well I was impressed, and he got a massive jackpot sweetie game followed by a big game with his toy.
So much easier with a pup. And wait for horses, bikes, joggers just as important. Dogs drives are strong, and as they get older, get stronger. It's funny when they chase the birds, or bunnies, but not so much when the chase goes faster and further.

Christmas puppies. This one is mine. My present to me. I've been really lucky. He came from a good breeder, so house training, apart from his first day when his routine was shot to pieces, has been going great. 3days, and we're nearly there.
Routine is so important for your new baby. Christmas is a bit chaotic, so getting back to a routine is great. The biggest issues with people that are at home all day is puppies learn to demand attention. Good or bad. Having structure is good. My pup comes to work. He has learnt really quickly to settle while I'm working, and then he gets all my attention when he comes out between jobs. He gets regular toilet breaks, and when we come home he has my attention but always settles well after he has had some training games, and playing, because that is what happens all day.
Socialising is beginning, in that he is seeing lots of things, like cars, other dogs, and meeting other people. But seeing is the most important thing, and being rewarded from me so he realises if anything does bother him, I'm his safe place. If your pup is meeting other dogs, it is better a level adult dog, and not lots of puppies, and in a safe place. So important not to overface them, or scare them. They are so vulnerable, and at about 4 months they hit a fear period, so vital that they are not scared at that age because it will stick there.
Biting is the big issue with most pet owners, but if pup is really bad, he's probably very tired. They need so much sleep. Evenings are the worst as they are busy all day, and like toddlers get fractious.
Placing boundaries and teaching pup things like in, out, on, off, and building your relationship is the most important thing. And everything else will fall into place, and you'll enjoy them, and be on the way to a happier well adjusted pup you can take anywhere.
Good luck.
