Today we remember the brave men, women and service animals who sacrificed so much so we could live in freedom.

As we always say, we hope you don't have to use us in the coming days, but of course if you do, we are open daily from 8.30-8.30 and our team are always on hand to help you work through your next steps.

FIREWORKS

Over the weekend and early into next week people will be celebrating fireworks night. It's an enjoyable time for adults and children alike but some pets hate it.

There are many things you can do to make your dog or cat more settled when fireworks are going off:
Ensure they are inside. If you have outdoor cats, get them in and make sure they stay in for the evening. Get a litter tray prepared if they normally toilet outside. If you have dogs, walk them early. The darker nights now means fireworks may start earlier. Ensure there are some warm blankets and hiding places for your pets. They may seek comfort in nuzzling in somewhere and hiding away. Loud music also can help to drown out the bangs. Classic FM do a specific playlist over these dates that are geared to ease pets anxiety. Distracting and playing with your pet can help. Having them with you for reassurance can be a good way of normalising the sound if they aren't over anxious. In the worst case your vet will have medication that can help remove extreme anxiety and create some calm. Make sure you have some handy if you know your pet suffers very badly.

Have a lovely weekend, but should you need us we are open 8.30-8.30 7 days a week. 01245 922023 .

AUTUMN DANGERS

The weather is changing and autumn is creeping in. please see our list of dog dangers to look out for as the season changes.

ACORNS & CONKERS - In larger quantities both can be toxic to dogs. Although they are quite bitter and shouldn't be a tasty treat, just keep an eye out for what your dog is nibbling on whilst out on walks.

TOADSTOOLS & WILD MUSHROOMS - Some mushrooms can be deadly, again, just be mindful of what your dog is eating if on forest walks.

FIREWORKS - Fireworks night can be stressful for many animals, and there are many resources available from the dogs trust website that helps with tips from helping them to hide somewhere securely that makes them feel safe, calming sounds or music to medication if its that bad.

https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/life-with-your-dog/seasonal/fireworks

Remember the chemicals in fireworks are also very toxic, so they are another thing to avoid them treating as a toy or thing to pick up if found on a walk.

TICKS AND FLEAS - The tick and flea cycle continues all year round. Make sure you are up to date with your spot ons or tablets from the vet to make sure your dog and home stays infestation free.

FALLEN FRUITS - As the trees start to lose their leaves and in some cases fruit, again be mindful of what your dog is picking up as many berries and fruit seeds or pips can be quite toxic.

Stay safe on your autumn walks and make sure you are in the know about what can cause problems.

If you sadly do need us this weekend we are open from 8.30-8.30 every day to help you.

7 WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN COPE WITH THE GRIEF OF LOOSING A PET....

Losing a pet is a significant and often deeply emotional experience for children. For many children, their pets are not just animals but beloved members of the family and cherished companions. When a pet passes away, children may experience a range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, and even guilt. As parents and caregivers, it's essential to provide support and guidance to help children navigate the grieving process and cope with the loss of their furry friend.

Here are some strategies to help children cope with pet loss with compassion and understanding.

Encourage Open Communication

One of the most important things you can do to help children cope with pet loss is to encourage them to talk about it and reflect on the good times they shared. Create a safe and supportive environment where children feel comfortable expressing their feelings and asking questions about what happened to their pet.

Be Honest and Age-Appropriate

When discussing the loss of a pet with children, it's essential to be honest and age-appropriate in your explanations. Provide simple and straightforward answers to their questions, using language and concepts that they can understand. Avoid euphemisms or vague explanations, as these can lead to confusion or misunderstandings. Depending on the child's age and maturity level, you may need to explain the concept of death and the natural cycle of life in a gentle and compassionate manner.

Validate Their Feelings

Children may express their grief in various ways, including crying, withdrawal, or acting out. It's crucial to validate their feelings and let them know that it's okay to mourn the loss of their pet. Offer comfort and reassurance, and let them know that you're there to support them through this difficult time. Encourage them to express their emotions in healthy ways, such as talking about their feelings, drawing pictures, or writing in a journal.

Create a memorial

Creating a memorial can help children cope with pet loss and honour the memory of their furry friend. Consider holding a small memorial service or ceremony where children can share stories, create artwork, or plant a tree or flower in their pet's memory. Allow children to be involved in planning and participating in these rituals, as it can provide them with a sense of closure and comfort as they say goodbye to their pet.

Provide Opportunities for Expression

Children may find it helpful to express their grief through creative outlets such as art, music, or writing. Encourage them to create a tribute or memorial for their pet, such as a scrapbook, photo collage, or poem. These creative activities can serve as an outlet for their emotions and allow them to honour the bond they shared with their pet in a meaningful way.

Seek Support if Needed

If children are struggling to cope with the loss of their pet, don't hesitate to seek professional support or counseling. A therapist who specialises in grief and loss can provide children with additional tools and strategies for coping with their emotions and navigating the grieving process.

Be understanding

Finally, use the experience of pet loss as an opportunity to foster compassion, empathy, and understanding in children. Teach them about the importance of caring for animals and the special bond that exists between pets and their human companions. Encourage acts of kindness and empathy towards animals and other people who may be experiencing loss or hardship. By instilling these values in children, you can help them develop resilience and empathy as they navigate the ups and downs of life.

For younger children we have created a booklet to help them navigate the feelings that pet loss can create. If you feel your child could benefit from one of the booklets, please let our team know if you would like a digital download or an actual copy; both of which are completely free.

HOT WEATHER WARNING

As temperatures rise this week please be mindful of what times you walk your dogs and the support they need in the warmer weather.
Heatstroke is a condition that can come on in dogs seemingly very quickly. They are not able to self regulate - meaning they don't realise how hot or thirsty they are until it's too late. It can seem like they are having fun running around to retrieve a ball in a park but they may be starting to struggle, but just not know when to stop, until it's too late.

5 THINGS TO DO TO PREVENT HEATSTROKE
Have walks in the morning or early evening when the temperatures are cooler Ensure cool water is available at home, in the garden if its warm or on trips out. Make sure there is a shady cool area for them to retreat to if they feel warm, a cool mat or even a paddling pool if you are able in order for them to stay at a nice temperature Keep games and strenuous activities to a minimum, remember they don't know when to stop when it comes to fun. Keep car journeys to a minimum and of course remember never to leave your dog in a locked car for any length of time while the temperatures are like this.

So grateful to Phoenix Pet Cremations who have looked after both of our beautiful boys. We lost Murphy last August and Paddy this week. I cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness and compassion and a special mention of David who collected both my boys from my house in their beds and bought their ashes back in beautiful caskets. His sensitivity is second to none. My family would like to thank you all so very much for making this sad time bearable โค๏ธ
