7 WAYS TO HELP CHILDREN COPE WITH THE GRIEF OF LOOSING A PET....

Losing a pet is a significant and often deeply emotional experience for children. For many children, their pets are not just animals but beloved members of the family and cherished companions. When a pet passes away, children may experience a range of emotions, including sadness, confusion, and even guilt. As parents and caregivers, it's essential to provide support and guidance to help children navigate the grieving process and cope with the loss of their furry friend.

Here are some strategies to help children cope with pet loss with compassion and understanding.

Encourage Open Communication

One of the most important things you can do to help children cope with pet loss is to encourage them to talk about it and reflect on the good times they shared. Create a safe and supportive environment where children feel comfortable expressing their feelings and asking questions about what happened to their pet.

Be Honest and Age-Appropriate

When discussing the loss of a pet with children, it's essential to be honest and age-appropriate in your explanations. Provide simple and straightforward answers to their questions, using language and concepts that they can understand. Avoid euphemisms or vague explanations, as these can lead to confusion or misunderstandings. Depending on the child's age and maturity level, you may need to explain the concept of death and the natural cycle of life in a gentle and compassionate manner.

Validate Their Feelings

Children may express their grief in various ways, including crying, withdrawal, or acting out. It's crucial to validate their feelings and let them know that it's okay to mourn the loss of their pet. Offer comfort and reassurance, and let them know that you're there to support them through this difficult time. Encourage them to express their emotions in healthy ways, such as talking about their feelings, drawing pictures, or writing in a journal.

Create a memorial

Creating a memorial can help children cope with pet loss and honour the memory of their furry friend. Consider holding a small memorial service or ceremony where children can share stories, create artwork, or plant a tree or flower in their pet's memory. Allow children to be involved in planning and participating in these rituals, as it can provide them with a sense of closure and comfort as they say goodbye to their pet.

Provide Opportunities for Expression

Children may find it helpful to express their grief through creative outlets such as art, music, or writing. Encourage them to create a tribute or memorial for their pet, such as a scrapbook, photo collage, or poem. These creative activities can serve as an outlet for their emotions and allow them to honour the bond they shared with their pet in a meaningful way.

Seek Support if Needed

If children are struggling to cope with the loss of their pet, don't hesitate to seek professional support or counseling. A therapist who specialises in grief and loss can provide children with additional tools and strategies for coping with their emotions and navigating the grieving process.

Be understanding

Finally, use the experience of pet loss as an opportunity to foster compassion, empathy, and understanding in children. Teach them about the importance of caring for animals and the special bond that exists between pets and their human companions. Encourage acts of kindness and empathy towards animals and other people who may be experiencing loss or hardship. By instilling these values in children, you can help them develop resilience and empathy as they navigate the ups and downs of life.

For younger children we have created a booklet to help them navigate the feelings that pet loss can create. If you feel your child could benefit from one of the booklets, please let our team know if you would like a digital download or an actual copy; both of which are completely free.

HOT WEATHER WARNING

As temperatures rise this week please be mindful of what times you walk your dogs and the support they need in the warmer weather.
Heatstroke is a condition that can come on in dogs seemingly very quickly. They are not able to self regulate - meaning they don't realise how hot or thirsty they are until it's too late. It can seem like they are having fun running around to retrieve a ball in a park but they may be starting to struggle, but just not know when to stop, until it's too late.

5 THINGS TO DO TO PREVENT HEATSTROKE
Have walks in the morning or early evening when the temperatures are cooler Ensure cool water is available at home, in the garden if its warm or on trips out. Make sure there is a shady cool area for them to retreat to if they feel warm, a cool mat or even a paddling pool if you are able in order for them to stay at a nice temperature Keep games and strenuous activities to a minimum, remember they don't know when to stop when it comes to fun. Keep car journeys to a minimum and of course remember never to leave your dog in a locked car for any length of time while the temperatures are like this.

Hi Elaine, we are very sorry you found yourself having to use our services again for your beloved companion, it never gets easier and we are glad we could support you during this difficult time
🌈💛

So grateful to Phoenix Pet Cremations who have looked after both of our beautiful boys. We lost Murphy last August and Paddy this week. I cannot thank everyone enough for their kindness and compassion and a special mention of David who collected both my boys from my house in their beds and bought their ashes back in beautiful caskets. His sensitivity is second to none. My family would like to thank you all so very much for making this sad time bearable ❤️

Due to a smaller staff team we will have to prioritise emergencies and spaces available for clients to be able to bring their pet in to us and collections from homes and vets, over ash collections so these will be limited on the days below.

A POEM FOR CATS

They will not go quietly,
the cats who’ve shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.

Old habits still make us think
we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.

Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.

And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them. . . and always will.

WHEN THE TIME COMES TO SAY GOODBYE

Making the decision to let your beloved pet go after an illness or diagnosis, or if they are elderly and loosing their standard of life is so very difficult.

The process can be confusing and it can be hard to work out what to organise first.

We are lucky enough to work with an amazing selection of vets who cover Essex, London and some of the Home Counties. Let us know where you are and we will provide you with the contact details of a vet who can help you in your area.

All aspects of the service can be discussed with the vet directly including costs and bookings.

We are then available to help you discuss your cremation needs and will help you by collecting your precious pet or arranging a suitable time for you or the vet to bring them to us.

We are available 8.30-8.30 every day (please note out of hours charges apply after 5.30 and at weekends)

Please see our guide below to help you with the process 🐾

OPTIONS

There are many different ways to honour your pets, and no one way is better, they are all individual. Here are a few things we can do here if its something you feel is right.

VIEWINGS

After your pet has passed you may want the opportunity to view them before their cremation. A viewing takes place in the peaceful setting of our remembrance room. You are able to view them alone, or bring up to 5 other people if needed who may also want to say goodbye.

ATTENDED CREMATIONS

Some clients want to be present in their beloved pets final moments before the cremation takes place. In this instance we are able to clear the area in the actual crematorium and allow up to 5 people to be present to witness their special friend have their cremation.

Both of these options do have a small charge attached as adaptions have to be made to facilitate them.

Both of these options are by appointment only and can be organised by speaking to one of our lovely team members on the phone on 01245 922023.

BOOKINGS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Just a little note to remind clients that any collection of ashes, drop off of your beloved pets, collection of jewellery, private viewings or attended cremations are all by appointment only.

Even though we are open during the week we need to ensure we know you are arriving, and have the right amount of time set aside to ensure you are able to get the attention you deserve on such a delicate matter.

Our opening hours are 8.30-5.30 Monday to Friday (we operate the phones remotely until 8.30pm for emergencies) and Saturday 8.30am-1pm (again we are open until 8.30pm for emergencies). On Sunday we accept emergencies only between 8.30-8.30.

If you need any help our number is 01245 922023, and one of our lovely team will help you.

WHAT HAPPENS IF MY PET PASSES AWAY OVER THE HOLIDAY PERIOD?

Sometimes we are lucky enough to be able to have the time and space to plan our special friends last few days, but on some occasions the decision may be taken out of our hands.

Here are some tips to help you should the worst happen over the Holidays.
if you know your pet is unwell, ensure you know the phone number of your registered vet and get a copy of their opening hours. They will have specific opening hours and will be able to direct you to an out of hours service when they are closed.
Assess the situation carefully, if you feel your pet has passed away, please check airways and check they are definitely not breathing.
If your pet has passed, there isn't always a need to go to the vet, although some people may feel comfort in having their veterinary professional guide them in the next steps after death.
There are a few different options available from home burial to using a cremation service such as ours. Our opening hours are pinned to our page should you wish to use our services, or ask for advice.
It is very normal to panic if you find your pet has passed and feel it necessary to act immediately with regards to sourcing veterinary help or help from us here at the crematorium. If you find that certain services are closed or restricted due to the holidays you must simply ensure that your pet is kept somewhere cool and safe until you are able to organise their next steps.
Your beloved pet can be stored in a cool place at home 24-48 hours after their passing should this be necessary.
At this time of year the outside temperatures can assist us by keeping them cool. Secure outbuildings or garages are ideal for short term storage. You might wish to place them on their bed or in a blanket or towel. It is suggested that you line the underneath with plastic sheeting or something like a bin bag that can be opened up so any waste they pass after death can be contained more easily.
A shorter term option for storage might be a spare room with the radiators turned off.
For small pets such as hamsters or gerbils a fridge or freezer is ideal if placed in a box if you feel comfortable doing so.

Remember all of these tips are for emergency periods only. In normal working hours we are here to advise and assist and can help you by either collecting your pet, or arranging for you to bring them to us.

Our telephone number is 01245 922023 should you wish to contact us.

ASHES INTO JEWELLERY

The way we celebrate the lives of our pets is different according to every individual going through that loss. We know one size doesn't fit all and that different people want different things so we like to ensure you all know of the range of options available to you.

Turning a small amount of our loved ones ashes into a jewellery piece is becoming more and more popular and we work with a fantastic company who offer a generous selection of items including pendants, rings, earrings and necklaces. The items are handmade and are a truly bespoke offering.

There is a choice of metals, and the ash encrusted jewel comes in a variety of colours.

When its comes to your beloved pets final journey with us, it's the little things that really make a difference.

Since opening many years back the owner Harry has always had our beloved friends who need collecting, transported in pet beds with little blankets to keep them cosy on their journey to us.

Ensuring our special friends get the dignity they deserve is one of our top considerations when transporting from your home to our crematorium.

if you have any questions about any aspect of the process please do feel free to get in touch with our lovely team who are always genuinely more than happy to help ease your mind and explain anything you aren't sure on.
