Our top tips for brushing your dog's teeth 🐾🦷

Introducing teeth brushing into your dog’s routine can be challenging, particularly if your dog has never previously had their teeth brushed before.

Quite often, dogs find this situation stressful and therefore, it’s important to be patient with your pooch. Reassurance and slow introduction is key.

Here are our top tips for introducing teeth brushing:

🦷Introduce teeth brushing when they are a puppy. If your dog is older, or hasn’t had their teeth brushed before, introduce it gradually

🦷Put a bit of dog-friendly tooth paste on your finger first to allow your dog to sniff and lick it first

🦷Run your finger along their cheek and then inside of their mouth. Once they are used to this, introduce the tooth brush.

🦷Allow them to lick the toothbrush before putting it in their mouth. Give them time to get used to it.

🦷If they find the tooth brush too daunting, you can try using a finger toothbrush.

🦷Start with the front teeth, taking regular breaks to allow them to lick the tooth brush.

🦷Once they are comfortable with their front teeth being brushed, moved to their back teeth.

🦷If you’re dog pulls away or is uncomfortable, stop and take a break

🦷If you notice your dog has any discomfort, redness or bleeding, speak to your vet.

7 ways to share the love with your dog this Valentine's Day

❤ Pamper them! Maybe you'll treat them to a brush, a nice warm bath, a paw massage with paw balm or perhaps you'll take them to your local dog groomer for a hair cut and nail trim!

❤ Suprise them with a cosy new bed. Upgrade their snoozy space with a fresh new bed or blanket.

Why do cats love catnip so much? ❤🐾

If you’ve ever given your cat a catnip toy, you may have wondered what it is about catnip that makes your furry friend act in such a strange way.

Catnip produces an organic compound called nepetalactone. This enters the cat’s system through their nasal passage which sends signals to their brain.

The nepetalactone sets off a euphoric reaction which makes cats feel good. Some scientist suggest that the cats respond to the nepetalactone as if it is a pheromone.

Not all cats react to catnip. In fact, 30% of domestic cats have no reaction at all. But interestingly, lions and tigers have been known to react to catnip in the same way as domestic cats.

All you need to do is spend an hour watching the birds in your patch, between 24th and 26th January, and help the RSPB build a picture of how garden birds are faring.

Had a cold recently and wondering if your dog is at risk of catching your cold?

According to some experts, it's said that whilst dogs can get colds, it's not thought that they can catch the common cold from humans.

They can expereince illness caused by dog-specific viruses, such as canine adenovirus and parainfluenza. The symptoms of these canine pathogens cause similar symptoms to those exhibited by humans with colds, such as sneezing, coughing and feeling tired.

Dogs, like humans, can catch colds in social settings. They are also more at risk of catching a cold if they live in poorly ventilated, crowded conditions.

If you suspect your dog has a cold or virus, you should contact your vet, particularly if symptoms persist or worsen.

Equine worm count kits - what are they and how should they be used? 🪱🐴 We have both Faecal Egg Count Kits and Saliva Test Kits (to test for tapeworm) available in-store. The worm count kits is really easy to use. Simply take a fresh dung sample, send it off in the pre-paid package and get the results in 1-2 weeks. If you are concerned about your results, think your horse might need a worming treatment or have a question about using the worm count kits, you can come in-store and a member of our team will be able to help.
