Honestly as a dog owner I have brachephalic breeds.

As a veterinary nurse we have a duty of care but have to be careful I can't stand the amount of dogs that are being walked in this severe heat, mainly brachephalic breeds.

Dogs can also still get heatstroke from having access to rivers, because if your dog gets heatstroke them swimming in water can mask signa of heatstroke therefore it still isn't ideal for them to play chase or play with balls in the water as it can mask symptoms.

Please as a dog owner & a veterinary nurse with the high degree weather keep your dogs in.
Do extra training, extra mental stimulation,
Swap a walk or a pop in

Meet Tinks ✨️

Tink has feline triaditis
Tri means three
Itis means inflammation

This condition causes inflammation in three specific organs:
Liver, pancreas & small intestines
Liver inflammation is known as chloangitis
Pancreas inflammation is known as pancreatitis
Small intestine is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Pancreatitis:
The pancreas is situated next to the duodenum & is very important for food digestion, it produces enzymes to assist in digestion of food & it produces insulin.
Pancreatitis occurs when the pancreas is irritated or inflammation is present.

IBD:
IBD or chronically inflamed intestines develop when cells from the immune system affects the intestinal walls. It can also be linked to recurrent gastrointestinal upsets, bacterial infections & sometimes lymphoma (not in Tinks case)

Chloangitis:
This type of inflammation affects the bile duct, the passageway that carries bile fluid from the gall bladder to the small intestine

Cats are prone to Triaditis; this is because their unique anatomy is part of the problem. Unlike dogs, a cat’s main bile duct and their pancreatic duct share one common opening to the small intestine

Signs that can occur with triaditis:
🐾 Vomiting (can occur with intestinal disease & hepatic (liver) disease
🐾 Jaundice
🐾 Weight loss
🐾 Loss of appetite/ off food
🐾 Diarrhoea
🐾 Abdominal pain
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Sudden change in behaviour

Pancreatitis, IBD & Chloangitis share many of these clinical symptoms, but there are a few symptoms that are more common with one illness

For example:
Abdominal pain is usually linked to pancreatitis
Diarrhoea is most often associated with IBD
Jaundice is usually the result of cholangitis

Chronic Triaditis or repeated bouts can lead to chronic Liver, pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease

Arlo loves long grass and being a spaniel is into all things sniffing!

Post every walk I check all my long haired doggies and give them a once over and scourer for grass seeds

I check short haired paws & ears too!

GRASS SEEDS 🫣

Mabel felt a bit nauseous & decided to eat alot of grass, something dogs do when they are feeling a bit icky to make them sick in the making of this she inhaled thousands of grass seeds (which are still in her mouth).

As a veterinary nurse I managed to tweezer some out (do not recommend this if you don't have the medical knowledge) however I took her to the vets to get her some pain relief & antibiotics for coverage

She's still drooling & less pawing at her mouth.
Grass seeds within her jools can migrate out as weirdly the mouth is the biggest healer but with knowledge comes worry!

Here are some dangers of grass seeds:
🐾 Because of backward facing barbs they can only travel one direction into the skin
🐾 Grass seeds contain bacteria which can cause infection
🐾 Paws & Ears are most common unless your a Mabel in this situation 🫣

Here she is even with grass seeds migrating out her mouth in all her glory x

Today we went to the bulldog meet up organised by The Edward Foundation who help loads of bulldogs find new homes. Mabel inhaled loads of Watermelon 🍉

Followed by a beach walk with Mr O & my gang in the late afternoon

ICE ICE BABY 🧊
Is it safe to give your pets ice cubes? 🧊

Every year we as pet owners are warned that ice is dangerous and it could send your fur baby into shock, however, there is no evidence to support this claim...

Preventing overexertion is so important, here's some tips to keep them cool:

🧊 Put cubes in their water bowl to keep it cool
🧊 Crushed ice in their food bowl for them to lick

⚠️ DO NOT GIVE ICE CUBES TO AN ANIMAL THAT HAS HEATSTROKE⚠️

🌞Cooling vests 🌞

I believe in cooling vests if your dog tolerates them

These cooling vests are made of instant cooling fibre material

How to use:
🌞 Shove in the fridge (I leave mabels overnight)
🌞 Soak the vest under cold water, wring the excess water & place on

❗️PLEASE READ - Temperature warning ⚠️
🌞 This week it's meant to reach 25-26 degrees 🌞

I will be making adjustments as needed therefore if it's too hot for walks pop ins will be the alternative option if needed they are:

30 mins £12
1 hour £15

I have cool mats in the crates, access to water & no need for pavement walks

Please bare in mind temperatures reaching high 20s can be uncomfortable for certain breeds, the size of the dog also, so I will be doing what I feel is best for the dog & their ability.

If you have a lickimat, a snuffle mat or a kong, shove some strawberries, blueberries or banana and pop them in the freezer and let me know and I'll give them when dropped off, I'll also be ensuring that the doggies & cats have fresh topped up water on drop offs / pop ins 🐾
