Today Nelly and I visited an organisation for adults struggling with mental health,
Quite often our sessions in schools and care homes involve games, tricks and using resources to support Nelly , but today all that was needed is Nelly just being her happy friendly self,
Watching her interact with people who just need some comfort from a canine friend was a joy to see 🐾😍

Training for Bramble has moved up a notch,
Today she wore her ‘Therapy dog in Training’ coat out for the first time,
A short visit to my mums care home was a perfect place to start, I want her to start associating her uniform with work,
She did incredibly well greeting a few residents calmly and settled nicely when asked- so far so good ✔️

One of the most popular things clients love to do when they spend time with Nelly is doing some tricks with her,

Last Saturday I spent the day on a course with IMDT studying dog body language, continuing professional development is so important, especially in this industry as it is not well regulated,
Understanding our dogs and how they communicate to us and other dogs is one of the most valuable skills we can have to help our dogs have a happy life in our care 👍🐾

Training a puppy is definitely a journey!
Lots of ups and downs,
Bramble has mostly been a dream to train and nurture , I thank my co- trainer Nelly for this, as she is so calm and sensible and Bramble has learnt so much from her.
Now to the tricky bits….
Bramble is not very food oriented so finding a ‘ high value’ reward for her has been a bit difficult, this means some of her training has been harder,
BUT I feel she has definitely turned a corner, the last couple of weeks she has not put a foot wrong, I know this might not last ( adolescent behaviour) can be so unpredictable and frustrating,

A lovely meet up with a fellow dog trainer - so proud of little Bramble who took it all in her stride 🐾😊

This morning I met up with a friend, Jackie Dean, who’s also a dog trainer and works for Paws with her therapy dogs. Our 4 dogs had never met each other and this is a very good example of how well socialised dogs can be together without a single bad word between them. All these dogs are very sweet natured but have always been kindly treated and have no reason to be aggressive towards one another and, above all, have been consistently well trained using reward-based, force-free and fear-free methods but it takes time (and lots of it). Note the little black dog! 🤣 All of them loose lead walked and recalled very well. Jackie and I were rather proud of our girls! !

Having a young dog can sometimes be a bit of a rollercoaster ride with training,
Some days everything is going perfectly and other days you feel you are failing, Bramble is a very smart young lady and in general very well behaved, but she has really been testing the boundaries lately with recall,
Switching off when she doesn’t want to come back to me, but the last couple of days it feels like we have been making huge progress!
Lots and lots of consistency, treats and praise!
Today was a massive challenge for her as so many dogs and an incredibly exciting environment, she was absolutely perfect with her recall- so proud of our scruffy little one 😍🐾

Nelly has had a fantastic first week back at work, she was lucky enough to receive a lovely present from a client and it’s currently a favourite toy at the moment 👍🐾😍
