Enzo had been his typical naughty self and eaten something he shouldn't have 🙈
He presented with vomiting and inappetence. X-rays suggested something stuck in his intestines, so Dr Zoe operated to find and retrieve the offending object (check out the last picture! 🧸)
Unfortunately the affected intestine section was so bad it needed to be cut out entirely. The body is so clever, that Dr Zoe could stitch the two intestinal ends together and they would heal together and function normally.

Enzo needed an extended stay at our Out-of-hours provider to continue with intravenous medication and fluid therapy to make a full recovery.

He is such a happy soul, he couldn't help himself smiling at his post op check! 🌟 But his owner has had to take away all toys and hard treats so it doesn't happen again 🫣

Please share! Brush up on the signs of heat stroke in cats and dogs 🐶🐱- These apply to other small pets too!🐰🐭🐾

If you are in any way worried your pet may be experiencing heat stroke, remember this:

💧WET THEN VET🧑‍⚕️

Get your pets fur damp with cool water as soon as you notice a problem, then call us to let us know you are on your way, so our team can prepare to start treatment immediately upon your arrival.

☀️Heat stroke, aka hyperthermia, is a life threatening condition where the body is unable to cool down.
☀️It can happen to any animal exposed to excessive warming. 🌥This can even be on a cloudy day or a day you think is rather pleasant than hot.
☀️Animals have a fur coat to contend with rather than being able to strip down to shorts and a t-shirt.
☀️And some breeds have a compromised airway too - such as Persian cats, Pugs and French Bulldogs, and short faced rabbits.

Let Sleeping Puppies Lie...😴

🐶Did you know that puppies need 20hours of sleep a day!😱 (And adults 15-18 hours)

🐶Behaviourists are concerned that puppies are not getting enough sleep and as a result could be at risk of developing behavioural problems. Sufficient sleep allows their emotional health to develop by processing the days events and create new connections in their brain.

🐶Allowing puppies to rest and observe their surroundings, whether at home, on a walk, or wherever they may be is also important. There is a lot to learn, so giving your puppy the time and space to watch is preferred. So be careful to not push them too quickly into interactions and socialisations.

Who knew?? There IS such a thing as too much fun 🤭

Want to know more about puppies and their development? Our lovely registered veterinary nurses would be happy to chat with you, or why not book for one of our puppy parties?? 💜

Happy Feline Friendly Friday!

A study has been published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice determining the risk factors for cats under the age of 7 years old developing gingivitis (inflamed gums).

They found the odds were significantly higher in these cats:
🦷 Fed wet food
🦷 Didn't hunt
🦷 Dribbled whilst being stroked
🦷 With orange variants in their coat colour

Do you agree with their findings? Does your cat fit more than one of the criteria?
😸Or have they got sparkling teeth and gums despite fitting the criteria??
Let us know in the comments 👇💜

If you're at all concerned your cat may have gingivitis, book an appointment with Dr Anissa or Dr Rita, our dental experts 🤓

🐱It's Feline Friendly Friday!
And what better way to celebrate than with our 🌟Patient of the Month - Toothless 🌟

👅Toothless came to us very subdued and uncomfortable. He wasn't wanting to eat or drink and it was no surprise why when our vet found he had a nasty lesion on the side of his tongue which looked like a burn of some sort. (The picture is after surgery when his tongue had been cleaned and treated).👅

We needed to find a way to support Toothless and give his tongue a rest to heal. An oesophagostomy feeding tube was placed and his owner was trained in how to provide his new liquid diet until he could eat by himself again. The tube comes out of is neck and sits in his oesophagus to bypass the mouth.

🐱It only took a few days and Toothless was back to his normal self eating without the need for the tube, so it was taken out without the need for sedation.

Congratulations Toothless- you superstar🌟💜

UPDATE! We are very pleased to say that the owner has been located and reunited 🥰 thank you for all the help and shares

📣 We have had a white female chihuahua brought in to us by a member of the public. She was found on Farthinghoe Close in Brackley and unfortunately is not microchipped. Please contact us or share so we can reunite her with her owners. Thank you! ☺️

🐾Our team are always learning to make sure we stay in the know with current advice, treatment options and therapies to keep your pet healthy and happy.

🎓In order to stay on the RCVS register and practice, our Vets need to complete 35 hours of further study each year, and Veterinary Nurses need to complete 15 hours.

With how busy we are, we often combine this with our lunch breaks- it's a good thing we all enjoy learning so much! 🤓

Here, the team are being informed of the latest updates in our VetPro range- supplements to support our pets with their skin and coats, joints, brain function, anxiety, digestion and more!! So feel free to ask any of the team about these non-prescription items. 🤓 (PHC members are eligible for discounts on these products, plus we have a fab in-store offer of buy 5, get the 6th free!)

🌙After a nighttime walk, it was noticed Daphne was bleeding from her front right paw and very sore to it. After inspecting her owners couldn't see anything, and left it alone to monitor. A month later, Daphne was still sore and lame on her leg, so she was brought to us for a check over and our vet noticed something shiny in the pad.
With sedation on board, the vet found and pulled out a deep piece of glass from her pad 😱

Imagine having that in your foot for that long! Daphne is a trooper for acting like nothing was wrong and recovering so well.... must have been her stylish and protective footwear 😎

24/04/2024

🐾Eva was in for her spay yesterday, but she also needed to have some baby teeth extracted as they were making no effort to fall out! 🦷

Baby (deciduous) teeth fall out on their own in most cases, but commonly in smaller and short faced dog breeds they can stay put. In the teeth images (which is not Eva!) the retained baby tooth pushes the adult tooth (the asterisk) out of position which can cause problems for jaw alignment, tooth location and gum irritation. They also increase the risk of plaque and tartar build up by trapping food.
For most teeth we use tools to help loosen them, but as in the case of the second tooth photo (also not Eva) we will drill away the overlying bone to help remove the long rooted tooth to prevent root fracture.

🦈We've also seen our fair share of little sharks at the practice too, where there seems to be a problem of any baby tooth falling out! 👀🦈

It's also not exclusively dogs either 🐱

And for our keen eyed followers, that *is* Eva from our PupStar post last year 🥰 She got so big! (Don't they all? 😅)

Meet Ginger!! Our incredible Patient of the Month! 🌟

Ginger's keen eyes owners noticed she had blood from her v***a and was skinnier than her Guinea Pig friend. 🐹
On clinical exam, the vet felt an abnormality in her abdomen and suspected an ovarian cyst or tumour about the size of a large blueberry 🫐

Options were discussed and surgery was elected- spaying a Guinea Pig can either be done midline (like in the photo) or with two incisions near their back to take out just the ovaries. As fiddly as the midline approach was, it was just as well as the o***y had grown a lot in just a few days!! It was now the size of a grape 🍇 😱 so the o***y was too big for the other technique!

Check out the photo! (For the none squeamish) Ginger not only had a large left ovarian tumour but her right o***y was also cystic. These were taking up a lot of room in her abdomen and also a lot of energy- no wonder she was losing weight.

She recovered beautifully from her anaesthetic and went home the same day, and immediately started putting back on the weight. We are pleased to report over 1 month later, Ginger is making leaps and bounds- quite literally 🥰

Well done Ginger and to your family too! For being incredibly brave and strong throughout 💜 🐹

Ovarian cysts and tumours are surprisingly common in female Guinea Pigs but we wouldn't recommend neutering them without a clinical reason, like in Gingers case.
Males on the other hand we definitely recommend neutering to help with aggression and prevent unwanted litters.
