We visited Gracie due to her urinating a little more often than usual and occasionally posing to urinate with no success. A full health check revealed very little, and her urine appeared normal to the naked eye. Further urinalysis however showed increased red blood cells and high protein levels in the urine🐴.

To investigate further, we put a camera into Gracie’s bladder to assess the area (cystoscopy) and to obtain further samples from the kidneys if necessary. As it happened, the cause of the problem was clear 🔎.

After having her bladder fully drained, administration of local anaesthetic and muscle relaxants, Gracie allowed Izzy and Ricki to manually remove the bladder stone (urolith) using a combination of small fingers and laparoscopic retrieval instruments.

We are pleased that Gracie has made a full recovery and is back to normal exercise🥳.

❗Bladder stones, or uroliths, are uncommon findings in horses❗

They are made primarily from calcium carbonate (chalk) as opposed to uroliths in dogs, cats and humans which are often composed of calcium oxalate (due to their high protein diets).
Horses excrete large amounts of calcium in their urine, as calcium absorption in the body is unlimited - what they eat, they will absorb. It is then up to the kidneys to excrete the surplus calcium which is why horse urine appears so cloudy.
If horses are fed calcium rich diets (large quantities of alfalfa, clover and beet pulp), the excess calcium absorbed will predispose them to cystitis symptoms or uroliths as seen in Gracie.

Increasing acidity in urine can also help prevent calcium deposits and can be achieved with Vitamin C or apple cider vinegar supplementation.

⭐Introducing Izzy⭐

Izzy hails from South Yorkshire originally but crossed the Pennines to study veterinary at the University of Liverpool 🎓.

Whilst there she was awarded the prestigious Barrie Edwards Prize for Equine Clinical Studies, awarded to the top performing final year student in equine studies. 👏.

After graduation, Izzy was awarded a Student Travel Bursary to attend a veterinary practice in Durban, South Africa to gain experience of the busy racing scene there 🏇.

Last year, she spent time backpacking across South America for 3 months after she completed an 18 month internship at Three Counties Equine Hospital, rotating around medicine, lameness, surgery and emergency cases.

She joined us in September 2024 after returning from her travels.

In her spare time she likes hiking, swimming and hanging out with her Italian Greyhound, Snook, who can often be seen snoozing in the car on calls with her 🐾.

Izzy has been a fantastic addition to our team!

Skylark sustained a significant injury when she collided with fencing in the field, resulting in a large chest wound.

Beth sedated her, clipped, cleaned & throughly debrided the wound before suturing the wound closed. For this wound, Beth used a combination of tension relieving absorbable sutures followed by nylon cruciate sutures to align the skin edges🪡.

After 2 weeks of box rest, and careful management from her owner, her sutures were removed and she came back into normal exercise again🏇.

A swift and satisfying outcome despite the nasty looking field injury👌.

Great to have had the privilege of sponsoring Claudia Gilbert when she raced in the BHS Charity horserace at Newbury racecourse earlier this month⭐.
Claudia came a very creditable 4th on Outrace trained by Richard Hannon.
Well done Claudia 👏

Harvey has been a long-standing patient of the practice, battling the complex condition of ERU (Equine Recurrent Uveitis).

Earlier this year, he unfortunately lost the vision in his right eye, although remains pain-free.

Despite this challenge, Harvey and his owner have been out competing through the summer and he’s taken everything in his stride with them set to compete in the National Amateur Championships held at Aintree in a few weeks time ⭐.

What an inspirational partnership👏

Merlin had a swollen eye. Beth stained it and an ulcer was revealed in an area of the eye near the third eyelid. With suspicions of a foreign body Merlin was sedated and a grass seed was located 🌱
After the grass seed was carefully removed, he was prescribed eye drops to help heal his cornea and he's now back to normal!
If you ever have any concerns about your horse’s eye, including abnormal discharge, swelling or a closed eye, it is always best to get it checked as eyes are delicate 👁.

Ricki was away in Holland for 3 days last week, attending the ISELP Distal Hindlimb module at the fantastic Sporthorse Medical Diagnostic Centre, just outside Amsterdam 🩺.

Excellent lectures, outstanding practical sessions and the opportunity to spend time with a wide range of vets from all over the world made this a memorable CPD event.

Also good to catch up with old friends

Thanks to all at ISELP, SMDC and the event sponsors 👏🏼

Sam came in with a puffy eye. After looking at him, Lauren found an ulcer in it 👁.
Initially she prescribed eye drops but Sam was not wonderfully compliant with this meaning he wasn’t getting in the dose needed to help resolve this 🫣.
After realising he wasn’t going to cooperate with his owners, Lauren decided to place an eye lavage system (SPL-subpalpebral lavage) under sedation and local anaesthetic. This turned out to be the key as Sam tolerated this much better😅.
7 weeks of dedication from his owners and his ulcer finally healed and he was back to his normal weekends of competing regularly! 👏

Sleepy is notoriously a firecracker, despite her name.

However, she was little less fiery earlier this year when she was struggling with laminitis on and off. She was very sore but after a mixture of lifestyle management, x-rays, blood tests, working closely with the farrier and medication, she was on the road to recovery within a couple of weeks.

She is now back to her spicy ways and keeping the kids on their toes at Windsor Horse Rangers 🌶🐴

Rossito recently had quite the mishap, somehow, he managed to tear his lower eyelid 🫣.
Marine came to the rescue to stitch up the wound, administer eye drops, and give pain relief.
Despite the ordeal, Rossito was an exemplary patient ⭐
His eye has healed beautifully without the need for any follow-up visits and thankfully Rossito is back to his happy self, ready for his next adventure 🏇
