My final Trail Hunt with Jack for 2024 and we got our Foundation Plus certificate!

I feel so grateful to Niki and Sam for continuing to make WunderMutts the special, inclusive and fun place to spend quality time with my dogs.

It is truly a special and beautiful thing to have passionate and fun people who love what they do enough to put the massive effort they do into every class and event for us. Thank you both 🙏

Please welcome Shikari who recently began regular Canine Wellbeing Outings with me 😊

Shikari is a very sensitive girl whose guardians have put in a huge amount of effort into helping her through adolescence, ensuring that she is listened to when communicating her needs.

Allowing anyone to take her anywhere without her family requires a lot of trust from Shikari and her humans and is a true priviledge 🙏

NOW is the time to……

🐾 Speak to your vet about meds if your dog really suffers

🐶 Get your Pet Remedy calming plug-ins going

🐾 Start natural calming supplements like YuMove Calming Care One-A-Day Chewies (speak to your vet if your dog is on any other medication)

🐶 Set up a cosy, sound-muffled den. Feed all meals, treats and chews in there.

🎵 Introduce sound masking music so pup’s used to hearing it - this could be classical music; taiko drumming; reggae. Whatever your dog is relaxed by. If you’re trying Taiko drumming for the first time, desensitise pup to it first by playing it at a low volume while pup enjoys a stuffed Kong. Over time, increase the volume. Whatever you choose to use, we’re looking for pup to be not bothered by it.

🐾 Get some thick window coverings set up

🐶 Research local firework displays so you know when they’re happening and ensure your pup won’t be alone at those times

🐾 Start moving evening walks to earlier so pup won’t need to go outside at peak firework times.

🐶 Make sure you’re stocked up with Kongs, Lickimats, favourite fillings and toppings and pup’s favourite long lasting chews. If pup loves frozen Kongs/Lickimats, you can get them prepped now so they’re ready to go. If you’re not sure they can manage a frozen Kong/Lickimat, you can start practising now - refrigerate them first, the partially freeze, then semi-freeze and then fully freeze them.

🐾 If you want to try anything like ear muffs or body wraps, now is the time to start slowly conditioning your pup to them

There is a fun dog show on today. I probably could take our dog Jack. He may enjoy it or he may find it too overwhelming. So, if I do take him, I need to be 100% ok with bringing him straight back home if he's not comfortable. I can then go back on my own if I want and spend time there supporting the local charity, without stressing out my dog. We make decisions for our dogs all the time. We need to become good at being aware of and flexible around our dogs needs. It doesn't mean we have to miss out, or feel guilty they are missing out 😊

Please welcome Nala as a new regular for my Canine Wellbeing Outings 😊

Nala's family have been working with me to figure out why she barks at other dogs and have just decided a Canine Wellbeing Outing once a week with me will give them respite from the stress of managing her while we all work together to improve how she feels out in the world.

She is such a sweetheart who is doing amazingly well in many areas and is just struggling a little with navigating social situations (something very common with a lot of dogs but especially German Shepherd who can be misunderstood by other dogs and are often very sensitive) as she goes through adolescence.

Nala's humans went to another trainer before coming to me, but felt the methods used were harsh and unfair on her. It can be so difficult to walk away from a professional, even when they treat your dog badly, because you still need answers!

Thankfully there are many wonderful trainers and behaviourists in Bracknell to choose from, so if you EVER feel even SLIGHTLY uncomfortable with the professional you have chosen - WALK AWAY! There are definitely better options 😊

At the weekend I refreshed my dog first aid skills with the lovely Imogen at Dog First Aid - Surrey

If you live or work with dogs then having this knowledge could save yours or your client's dogs' life.

There is no such thing as a canine ambulance; in an emergency it is upto you to get your pet to the vet alive for them to be treated.

Please welcome Forrest as a new regular. Forrest enjoys individual Canine Wellbeing Outings with me a few days a week.

I was recommended to his guardians by his previous Dog Walker who had been his buddy for many years, but realised that living with (managed) chronic pain, he had stopped enjoying being out as part of a group.

I have so much respect for his dog walker for putting Forrest's welfare and that of the other dogs in his regular group, above everything else (sadly this is not a given with all professionals) and to his family for entrusting me to take over.

He is loving his private adventures and so am I, he's a smashing lad 😊❤️

Advocating for your dog, are we just too British to do it?? It might sound simple enough, you know your dog best and obviously want to make sure others respect them, right? In reality this can be really challenging for a lot of people, including me (though I am getting better at it). Advocating for your dog might look like saying "No" when someone asks to stroke them, it might be asking someone to call their dog away from yours in the park, it could be finding a groomer who will prioritise how your dog feels about the process and take their time (over several visits if needed) rather than a quick and pretty finish achieved by restraining a shut down dog (let's be fair here, it is just as often dog owners who push for this as it is the groomers), or communicating with your Vet and their team about how you want your dog handled and when you need to be involved for your dog's wellbeing and everyone's safety during a visit. That last example was me and our wonderful veterinary team yesterday when Jack had to go in for a dental to remove a broken tooth (ouch!). It has taken me many, many years of living and working with dogs as well as having several close friends in the vet care world who I can discuss things with, to become even vaguely comfortable advocating for my dog at the vets and it still stresses me out! I am naturally submissive around authority figures, especially professionals with extensive knowledge and skills that I do not have (Veterinarians, human doctors, teachers, law enforcement etc.) and I often freeze up when having to think on the spot (the more important the question, the more likely I am to freeze - helpful huh?) so going in to see the vet when my dog is stressed and I am trying not to look like an idiot, while advocating for my dog and remembering the relevant information to give for the Vet to be able to do their job, is quite a lot for me. I'm only human. On this occasion, we had been seen by one of the lovely Vets at our practice, Ha

I had a lovely private outing* with Stringer today. He really enjoys a ball and using his nose to find it is a great alternative to repetitive throwing. I am able to offer 121 dog excursions* to a select few clients whose dogs really benefit from me keeping them feeling safe (as well as actually being safe). If you think your dog might enjoy personally tailoured adventures* with me, please get in touch. Most of the dogs I see regularly come out with me just one or two days a week, others, like Stringer are more Ad Hoc. For some guardians, this gives them a day of respite, as although they love their dogs, going out in the world together can be hard. It's ok to give yourself permission to take some "me time" so that you can show up as your best self for your canine family member ❤️ *Despite having been a professional dog walker for 18yrs, I don't like calling them "walks" any more (I can't decide what to call them instead though!). I feel "walk" frames the whole experience as being primarily about exercise, or simply getting from A to B, and on an individual level, it should be so much more than that. When we take our dogs out, it is their time and I like to find out how each dog chooses to spend it.
