🚨SUNDAY SOCIAL🚨

Every other Sunday I am running a group walk for dog owners who are looking for a controlled environment to work on dog / human neutrality and obedience around distractions.

This will be on on lead / flexi walk as it will be welcome to all dogs, regardless of training level. This means there may be reactive or nervous dogs attending, so safety is a top priority.

We have loved having Clara's Canines with us for the past week and a half. The dogs absolutely love her and her dogs!

They will be seeing a whole lot more of her in a few weeks 🥰

Today we had a neutrality walk with Milo and his owner.

His owner is very anxious around other dogs since he was attacked, which is understandable!

Milo’s owner has worked so hard on his neutrality around other dogs but was apprehensive to allow him to play with other dogs, incase it escalated too far… which is where Enzo comes in!

Enzo is neutral 99% of time, but also loves to play with other dogs. He showed Milo how to play appropriately and both dogs were brilliant. Took in turns to chase, read each others body language perfectly and paused regularly.

So grateful that Enzo is able to help clients and their dogs everyday 🖤

Rusty has found his forever home after meeting his new owner last week🥺

Although he could be rehomed today, I’d like to keep him with me for a few more weeks to really refine his training..

Fully Obedience trained:
Sit & Down with duration and distraction
Walk to heel
Crate trained
Reliable recall
Place / settle
All sorts of fun tricks!

Rusty can be a very timid and nervous dog around new people but easily builds a bond through training and play - which he loves. He can be sensitive to touch and did nip in his previous home when being stroked whilst asleep on the sofa. He seems to startle easily when sleep / relaxed. He is not the sort of dog to nip or bite out of the blue, he’s been around lots of people and dogs with no issues.

He is wary of men (no information on what has caused this) but does come out of his shell with them once a bond has been built but this can take more time than with women but it depends on the handler and how knowledgeable they are.

He required an experienced home who are willing to continue / keep up his training, build a strong bond and understand what his triggers are.

He would be fantastic in an agility, fly ball or any sport based home.

He can be rehomed with another well balanced, well mannered dog. He will not cope well with a young, “in your face” dog. He has lived with and been on off lead walks with my dog and had no issues. He is crate trained and loves his crate to have his own space.

If anyone is interested, please get in touch. I’d like to keep him for a few more weeks to really solidify his training ready for his forever home. The vetting process could take some time and a 5* home for him is the absolute priority, where I know he will be fulfilled.

If your dog cannot recall from everything in the environment when called once, they shouldn’t be offlead.

As part of my job, I often walk reactive dogs (on lead at all times) and the amount of dogs who rush us is crazy. The owners are calling the dogs name 5+ times to which the dog ignores. One day your dog will rush the wrong dog and the walker won’t be able to stop a fight from breaking out.

“But my dog deserves to run free”
Yes, all dogs deserve off lead freedom, it’s down to YOU as their owner to train them. If their recall is 50/50 or they’re still learning, use a longline. When you see a dog or person, step on the longline so your dog can’t run over to them.

“Longlines are fiddly and get caught on things”
How else do you plan to stop your dog from running over to reactive dogs or chasing a squirrel into a road? The more effort you put into training, the less time your dog will need to be on a longline.

What training does the course include?

WEEK 1: Marker systems & correct socialisation
- showing owners how to effectively communicate with their dog in a way they understand
- Raising a confident, well mannered puppy and how socialisation plays its part

WEEK 2: How to build a bond with your puppy & Co-operative play
- Building trust and relationships and preventing undesirable behaviours in adolescence
- How to play with your dog in a way that strengthens your bond

WEEK 3: Basic Obedience
- Sit / Down / Recall and how to proof these commands to make them bombproof in the real world

WEEK 4: Lead walking & freeshaping
- Getting the perfect loose leash walk with your puppy
- The art of allowing your dog to think for themselves and build their confidence

Did you know we offer training walks?

Milo has been doing training walks with me for a few months now and his progress has been amazing!

He can be reactive to dogs and people, so we have been working on exposure to these triggers in a controlled manner.

Sometimes owners can become worried or nervous to take their reactive dog out into these environments, which is why training walks are a great option, so I can do it for them!

Today Milo and I had a trip to hobbycraft and Pets at home, we watched people and dogs go by and stayed calm and engaged🐾

I took Rusty out to Windsor this morning with a group of around 7/8 dogs and their owners.

To say he smashed it is an understatement. He showed no signs of stress and just took everything in his stride.

His new home is going to be so lucky to have him 🐾

STRUCTURE > ROUTINE

Structure is often something people confuse with routine, so what’s the difference?

Routine is feeding, walking, playing, toileting, crating your dog at set times throughout the day - among other things but these are the main activities I see people add to a routine.

Structure is what I like to call having “consistent rules & boundaries”. These are things like hand feeding meals, having the dog on place or in their crate whilst preparing food, thresholds in the home, structured walks and so on.

How could having a routine affect your dogs behaviour?
If you feed your dog at 6pm everyday, they are likely to work this out and may start showing demanding behaviours because they want their food (same applies for walks) If all of your walks are “free” walks, your dog may see more value in the environment than they do in you and therefore won’t listen to you. If your dog has free access to toys at home, they won’t see value in playing WITH you, which can disrupt your training progress.

How can you add structure to your dogs life?
Hand feeding your dogs meals, this will not only strengthen your relationship but will also naturally improve engagement in & outside of the home (not to mention saving money from buying treats every week). Having your dog on their place or in a crate when preparing or eating food - this will teach them to switch off when food is around and minimise bad habits when it comes to food. Structured walks - by adding some training and play to your walks, you will improve your relationship with your dog and your dog is more likely to WANT to engage with you.
Not having set times for walks & feeding - some days we can’t stick to a routine, and we don’t want our dog demanding a walk on days we don’t feel up to it!
