SESC attended a sheath clean end of July 2024. Here we quickly discovered abnormalities of this horse’s p***s. These abnormalities were coupled with a foul smelling discharge.
**what we detected: as you can see from the image, at the head of the horses p***s (technical term is their “glands p***s”), you can see this brain like rippling. We could also feel that the horses urethra was enlarged and had some abnormal nodules on it**
The owner was advised to seek veterinary attention with possible biopsy, because we believed there was pathology there.
This was almost immediately done and the biopsy came back as a confirmed Squamous Metaplasia, which is the precursor/ precancerous development of an SCC (Squamous Cell Carcinoma); the most common and aggressive forms of pe**le cancers in horses.
The horse was admitted to an equine hospital and had surgery two weeks later. The veterinary team opted to do almost a full pe**le removal/ amputation; this was to make sure they got good margins from the affected areas.
The horse himself has had a fabulous recovery and since returned to full work. SESC have since been out to health check and clean post surgery and will continue to work with this horse and owner to monitor moving forward.
At SESC, we continue to work with these cases and invest in our training and knowledge pool for value add to our service. We will share when appropriate these stories for educational purposes in due course.
