Juncus ensifolius - Flying hedgehogs

Bright green, grass-like foliage is topped with numerous very dark brown seed heads making it an attractive and unusual addition to a pond and giving it its common name.

Pond ready – This plant comes ready potted in aquatic soil

* Recommended Planting Depth: 0cm - 5cm
* Native to British Isles: No (however this plant is not classed as an invasive species and is suitable for home pond use)

Marginal pond plants are usually best suited to shallow water or damp soil and are a great way to add some contrast to the border and shape of your pond.

Juncus ensifolius - Little maintenance is required. Trim just above the water surface after foliage has died back in Autumn to tidy leaving a little material to protect new shoots.

It’s important to keep an eye on water levels and to remember to top up your pond during the hot spells. Excessive water loss will cause distress to fish in your pond and can expose them to predators. Your plants will also suffer too, if water levels aren’t kept an eye on.

If there’s not enough shade provided over your pond, too much uv exposure can lead to fish getting sunburnt!

Around the edge of your pond, introduce floating pond plants, such as Water Lettuces and Phyllanthus Fluitans, which help to add additional surface cover for shade and are great at reducing unwanted algae.

Bog or marsh plants thrive around the edge of your pond or water feature, where the soil remains damp but not fully submerged.

These moisture loving plants are ideally suited for planting directly into soil around the pond edge, maybe where the pond overflows, or in a purpose built bog garden made from surplus pond liner.

If they are to be placed in a beached area it may be desirable to plant into an aquatic container that is then directly buried into the gravel. This will contain its growth and spread.

Also known as marsh plants, bog garden plants add pops of colour, height and interest to the border of your pond as well as creating shelter for its wildlife.

Freshwater bog plants also help to extend the flowering season around your pond and look stunning when planted alongside traditional marginal plants in the shallows.
