Let’s all cheer on Deri in the comments as he continues his muzzle training!
🐾 Muzzle training is something that should be normalised—there are so many reasons why dogs might need to wear them: to keep themselves, people, wildlife, and even vets safe.
It's important to note that a muzzle doesn’t give handlers permission to put their dogs in situations they’re not ready for. It’s a tool to help them manage certain scenarios safely and comfortably.
In Deri’s case, he’s dealing with some GI issues, alongside back pain, and is on medication that increases his appetite. To make matters more challenging, his short recovery walks happen to take him by KFC, where irresistible scraps are scattered by hawks in the park.
DERI has an incredible tracking nose and even better acting skills (disguising he's looking for snacks until he's within his lead length of them), these snacks can lead to painful pancreatitis flare-ups and more discomfort. The solution? A muzzle during walks to keep him safe and on track with his recovery.
Anyone notice the new muzzle never seen before!?! Interested in a reel on this beaut of a light, clear, padded muzzle with scavenger guard!!!
Let’s show Deri some love and support for this important step in his care!
This is session 2 with his new muzzle! He's blown me away with his skills and trust in training. I love #positivereinforcement.

FETCH IS MESSING UP YOUR DOG! 🛑
Save this reel for it's replacement ! Follow @mydogsclubuk for ways to advance your dogs play skills.
Let’s get real—fetch is NOT the magic game everyone thinks it is. In fact, it can cause more harm than good for most dogs. Here’s why:
⚠️ Overstimulation: Repetitive throwing sends your dog into a frenzy, not relaxation. They're wound up, not worn out.
⚠️ Joint Damage: Those sharp turns and constant running can wreak havoc on their joints, especially for breeds prone to hip or elbow issues.
⚠️ Obsessive Behaviour: Fetch can create unhealthy, obsessive habits. Some dogs can't switch off—they live in a cycle of constant anticipation, stressing them out.
⚠️ Mental Exhaustion: Fetch doesn't engage their brains. Dogs need games that challenge them mentally, not just physically.
Stop relying on fetch as a one-size-fits-all solution! 🚫 There are far better, safer ways to play that actually benefit your dog. 🧠💪
Follow us for smarter, healthier play ideas, and feel free to ask us any questions—we’re here to help! 🙋♂️🙋♀️ Apologies for the bluntness, but your dog's wellbeing comes first! 💯🐾

Unpopular opinion.
We can do better. Would you like a series in this? How to find a good pet dog.
If your here you've probably got a dog. How did you choose them? Would you get another of the same breed, same source?
Deri has me so mixed. His Temperament is just as we should of expected - sassy companion dog. He's a love and our best friend. We love having him being is guardian.
He's got a few complicated medical conditions - linking to these breeds. I don't think I'd ever own another cavalier or x due to this. Or many of the other breeds that often suffer due to their breeding.
It has a huge cost........ financially and emotionally.
The only definite thing a pet dog needs to be the bestest pet is to live a LONG healthy life - to reduce heartbreak. Breeding for longevity is rare - old stud dogs would be a great solution
Out next dog/s may find us (as in the job ee meet many) if we choose a dog it will be done so with research into longevity.

Why We Love Puppy Classes at My Dogs Club
A good puppy class is about so much more than just teaching "sit," "down," or stopping mouthing. It's an essential foundation that sets your dog up for a lifetime of better behaviour and a positive outlook.
Here’s what you can expect from our classes:
1. Understanding Your Dog's Temperament – We help you learn the unique personality traits of your puppy.
2. Decoding Dog Body Language – Recognizing what your puppy is communicating with their posture, tail, and ears is critical to building a strong bond.
3. Tailored Socialisation Plan – We provide a step-by-step guide specific to your dog’s needs, helping them interact confidently with other dogs, people, and environments.
When you invest in the right training early on, you’re giving your dog the best chance at a happy and well-behaved future!

First times are important.
First impressions matter. It makes a big foundation
Mimi lab was a little delayed with her socialisation, life happens. We've loved providing 121 support on how to help her feel comfortable in the big world. She's still with her mum. This is cool but means she's practiced all her ott puppy play and at times been pushy with her and quite poor at reading play signals.
We've put some guidance in at home. Out and about we've watched dogs from a distance. This too is socalistion. Initially she was a little anxious. We kept a distance she was comfortable. Just as important.
We then looked at all the helper dogs (our own dogs and some clients) and matched Mimi with Sullivan. He's a cool chap. Social and loves a lady. He also loves nature so isn't intense or too playful. We didn't want to hype Mimi up. We wanted to teach her to copy some lovely social skills. Today she learnt that sniffing is fun, copying other dogs = friendship and play isn't 1000 miles an hour and breaks are needed.
I honestly love these 121 sessions. They are so effective and give life long effective results. Mimi thanks to Sully has a great foundation. Positive reinforcement has built her confidence and relationship with her people.
The goal are big - camping adventure family dogs. We are totally here for it.
The # arent all linked to our ethos but they help people find us.

One training mistake most dog owners make without realising?
Assuming dogs know the difference between right and wrong is a common misunderstanding. In reality, dogs don’t have a moral sense like humans; instead, they operate on what’s safe vs. dangerous and what’s rewarding vs. unrewarding 🐾.
When dogs misbehave, they aren’t being "bad"—they're simply acting on instincts or seeking what motivates them. For example:
1. Chewing shoes 👟 isn’t “wrong” in their mind; it’s rewarding because it relieves boredom or anxiety.
2. Not coming when called 🐕🦺 doesn’t mean they're being defiant—they might be more motivated by an interesting smell 🦴 than the reward being offered.
To train effectively, focus on motivation. Reinforce behaviours that are safe and desirable ✅ through positive rewards 🎉, and manage situations where dangerous or unwanted behaviours might occur 🚫. This way, your dog learns what’s rewarding and safe, without the human concept of “right and wrong.”

You didn't see that coming
There seems to be a misunderstanding around what positive reinforcement and force-free training truly mean. The idea that "positive-only" training doesn’t work for all dogs comes from a misconception. Ethical training is not about having no boundaries or never saying "no"—it’s about teaching dogs in a way that avoids causing them pain or fear.
The term “force-free” can sometimes be misused or misunderstood, especially when it’s portrayed as a passive or ineffective approach. However, the core of this method is about being intentional and mindful in how we train, ensuring that we're promoting trust, confidence, and a strong bond with our dogs.
It's also true that, within any community, there can be a minority of individuals who take an extreme stance or spend more time critiquing others than focusing on effective training. While they don’t represent the majority, it’s important to clarify what ethical training really involves—clear communication, boundaries, and respect for the dog's well-being.
At the end of the day, saying "we don’t intentionally cause pain or fear to dogs or clients to change their behaviour" sums up the foundation of force-free training, even if it's not a catchy slogan!
When working with dogs, especially in training or behavioural work, it's important to consider several key components. These sections form the foundation for effective training:
Assessment 📜
Ethology 📷
Timing ⏰
Consistency 📆
Motivation 💰
Communication 📱
Progression 📈
Health 🏥
Genetics 🧬
This seems a lot - but our clients that work with us wouldnt even know lots of it were happening. We teach owners what they need to know but don't train them up to be dog pros as that's not needed to meet their goals. (Except for 3 owners who wanted to become dog pros - MDC coaching is on its way!)
