Rock salt is a mixture of sodium chloride and grit, it is used to help de-ice the roads in winter. Some dogs and cats will lick their paws and fur after a walk causing small amounts of ingestion. This can cause oral irritation, drooling,nausea and vomiting. The pads can become dry and cracked through out the winter, walking cracked paws over grit is the equivalent of rubbing salt into a wound.
Never let your dog drink puddles of melted snow near roads or paths that have been gritted. Xx
