🐱 Useful Feline Information! 🐱

It has come to our attention that not many people are aware that cats can become pregnant from 4 months old, sometimes earlier!! (Rare but does happen). They are extremely fertile!
Also not many people are aware of the over population of cats and kittens in rescues and charities! They are over run and are struggling for space!
"An estimated 250,000 unowned cats live in UK towns and cities, approximately 300,000 cats that are not considered pets live on farms and in excess of 150,000 cats enter UK shelters every year"

Apart from caring for and loving your pets, our job is to also educate and provide information to our clients and the public!

We hear "oh we just let them out in the garden every now and then" TOO MUCH! It takes no more than a few seconds for a cat to impregnate or get pregnant!

We advise to please neuter your cats. This is to prevent kittens and future cats ending up in charities or rescues, searching for homes 💔

Neutering also has many more benefits! :
Reduces cat fights / Reduce scent marking / Reduces your cat roaming / Prevents disease and cancers.

☀️🔥 SUMMER TIME 🔥☀️

Record-breaking heatwaves have resulted in an increase of heat related emergencies in the veterinary world!! 🥵

Heatstroke is defined as a prolonged temperature of above 41 degrees!!! 🔥

PREVENTION: We ask clients to please be wise when considering to take your pet for a walk. We advise to walk your pets early morning, before the heat hits, or late in the evening, when the temperatures have cooled ⛅️
Ensure your pet has plenty of shade! 😎
Cooling Matts, fans, and spray water bottles are a few other methods we advise. 💦

If you believe your pet has Heat stroke we STRONGLY advise that you try and cool your pet before transportation to the vets by doing the following:
1. Wet towels dabbed at the thinly furred/no fur areas on your pet (DO NOT drape a wet towel over your pet)
2. Spray water onto your pet and place a fan in proximity.
3. Before transport to the vets, ensure your car is cool (Air-con is ideal)

Thank you for reading! We wish you all a lovely and warm summer! ☀️🔥

🎄Keep your pets safe over the Christmas Period!! 🎄
This post is to help our clients get a better understanding of the potential poison hazards around their home during Christmas!! (Most common ones)

CHOCOLATE!!! 🍫
The toxic component of chocolate is Theobromine and Caffeine. The amount of Theobromine in products will vary due to natural differences in cocoa solids 🫘 , brand and manufacturing and your dogs individual sensitivity.
• White Chocolate: Theobromine poisoning is not a risk. But the high fat content may present a risk of pancreatitis (24-72hrs after ingestion)
• Milk Chocolate: Contains a minimum of 20% cocoa solids.
• Dark Chocolate: is made without milk, with a minimum of 35% cocoa solids. Which makes dark chocolate the most toxic.

FESTIVE PLANTS!!! 🌱
• Holly: can cause hypersalivation, vomiting, inappetence, diarrhoea, lethargy and head shaking (In Dogs 🐶)
• Poinsettia: can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach with hypersalivation and sometimes vomiting.
• Mistletoe: considered low toxicity. Ingestion of the berries may cause gastrointestinal upset.
• Christmas Tree: low toxicity. Mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested. The needles are sharp, and can cause obstruction or physical injury.
• Ivy: This is not to be confused with the American “Poison Ivy”. The UK Ivy can still cause mild gastrointestinal upset. Or if in contact for skin for too long, irritant and allergic contact dermatitis.
• Lilies: All parts of this plants are extremely toxic to cats, even the pollen and can cause severe kidney damage. Lilies are not hazardous to dogs.

ALCOHOL!!!🍺
Treatment of ethanol toxicosis is largely supportive. Pets seem to be rather fond of particular Irish whiskey or cream liqueurs at this time of year! Being the most common cause of ethanol toxicosis in December in the UK for pets.
Please do not let this happen. It is not funny and can cause serious damage to your pets.

CHRISTMAS FOOD 🍰
Grapes, dried fruits (raisins/sultanas/currants) - Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies. These are toxic to pets and require induced vomiting to remove any that have been ingested ASAP.

Moral of the story… keep all food and drinks away from your pets as best as you can. We understand accidents happen and that’s why we are here! 😇

Please contact us if your pets has come into contact with any of the above, we can always give you advice if needed 📞
If accidents happen outside of our opening hours you can contact our out of hours vets, 01274 722 721

Beautiful Bella has lost two kilograms on a weight loss journey with Wakefield Vets4Pets – and owner Hayley says she's much more active, playful and affectionate as a result. "She just seems generally less grumpy as well – she probably felt how we do when we've overindulged!"

When Bella came in for her booster vaccination a year ago the team noted that she was overweight and would need to slim down to help her live a long and happy life. Since then the three-year-old house cat has been put on a special diet and she's now lost a third of her weight. Hayley said: "We're incredibly grateful to the team at Vets for Pets. They've given us some great advice and tips to keep the weight down. They are so approachable and we've never felt judged by them."

Head veterinary nurse Jess said: "Bella has been on her weight loss journey for over a year now and she's seen once a month for basically Waggy Weightwatchers as we call it. The owners have stuck with the plan very well and took note of everything we have told them, which is great. A 2kg loss is quite a substantial loss for a cat, so she's done really well."

Ten-month-old Filemon is on the mend after he fell behind a wardrobe and fractured one of his front legs in three places.

He was taken to the specialist orthopaedic team at Vets4Pets Cross Hands in Llanelli by his owners Kasia and Andrzej where he had surgery to repair the bone with implants. The main recovery barriers for Filemon were possible nerve damage, and keeping him quiet long enough to give his bone and wound time to heal – which veterinary nurse Rebecca says is no easy task for a cat owner. She said: "Thankfully, with the help of his diligent owner and plenty of the right medication, Filemon is recovering well and has full range of motion in his leg."

Kasia said: "We'd like to say a massive thank you to the Vets for Pets team for doing an amazing job to get Filemon back on his four legs! After surgery Filemon was in a crate for six weeks which wasn't easy for him being such a young and playful kitten. It's now been two months since the surgery and he's recovering really well. He's enjoying himself again just like before the accident."

Meet Jimmy, thanks to his microchip, he was reunited with his family after 2 years!

In 2021, Jimmy was suspected to be involved in a road traffic accident in which his owners were told he didn't make it. After straying for 2 years, a member of the public brought him into Doncaster Vets4Pets where our team scanned him for a microchip. After a quick call to his owners, our team were able to reunite him with his owners. We do love a happy ending💚

Cookie visited Vets4Pets Harlow after her owner noticed her eyes had become cloudy and sore. Luckily, her owner had seen this before and knew she had to act quickly. Cookie had suffered from hay pokes, where bits of hay can scratch or pierce the eye. After being put under local anaesthetic, the team were able to remove the tiny pieces of hay and get Cookie feeling a lot more comfortable.

Well done to Cookie's owner, our team, and of course, Cookie💚
