With spring now here, we know many people will enjoy fresh flowers around their home. It is IMPORTANT to ensure that lilies (Lilium species and Hemerocallis species) are kept away from cats.
Many people believe that it is only the pollen in lilies that is toxic to cats.
This is not true.
Experimental evidence has shown that leaves and petals are also toxic, and it is likely that the whole plant is a risk if eaten by a cat.
Initial signs of lily toxicity in cats include gastrointestinal signs (such as vomiting and drooling), before
progressing to signs associated with kidney dysfunction such as depression, inappetence and increased urination.
If your cat has come into contact with a lily (Lilium species or Hemerocallis species), we recommend that you seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible.
