Thank you to everyone who came along last night and enjoyed an informative evening at Brook Farm. We demonstrated the water treadmill and discussed its many benefits, and we had great talks by Liz from Baileys and Ben Payne of Essex and Suffolk Equine Vets. All your raffle purchases and donations were very worthwhile, and we raised £670 for World Horse Welfare.

This young chap has just been backed. He’s been exercising on the water treadmill since Spring of 2022, well before we started backing him. Why? Because the treadmill gets these young horses stronger and ready to carry our weight when we back them. Babies are often so weak, then we put the weight of a person on board and wonder why they have problems such as kissing spine. Of course the treadmill isn’t a “cure all” but we’ve seen a huge difference in young horses started on the treadmill first. Help them to build core and back muscles, help with straightness and teach them to work in a better posture. We also find it’s good discipline for them, and they get used to a person being above them - it all helps pre-backing!

Young Fudge having his water treadmill session, he is soon off to big school to be backed so this is perfect exercise for strengthening his back before someone sits on him.

BFTC was proud to sponsor BD Team London's Inter County Challenge's Elementary competition on Saturday with free treadmill sessions up for grabs!
I am delighted to congratulate winner Jo Mason with the lovely Monty, seen below with their first rosette, WELL DONE!
Monty has been having water treadmill sessions over the last few weeks and Jo has noticed a big improvement in his suppleness and strength, she also told us that she scored an "8" for his walk which normally only manages a 6.5!
Adam Smyth, London Team Trainer, also commented on how much Monty had improved following his treadmill sessions!

Do I need to get my vet's permission before bringing my horse to the water treadmill?

Yes - we strongly recommend checking with your vet before booking.

The treadmill is safe for most conditions, but to be sure then please seek advice from your vet.

How can I make use of the water treadmill for my horse?

At Brook Farm Therapy Centre we offer the option for residential stays, or you can travel your horse to us.

Many of our clients chose a residential stay for rehab, or perhaps when going on holiday so your horse stays fit and builds additional strength while you're away.

Most clients travel their horse to us on a regular basis. How often is up to you, and your own time and financial constraints, but many people choose to bring their horses to us once a week. To get the best potential benefit, we recommend a minimum of 6 sessions. Some clients have been using the water treamill regularly over a very long period of time, and have found it to be of great benefit.

One of the questions we get asked a lot is "but what if my horse won't go on?" (the water treadmill that is). We've never ever had a horse that won't go on. We allow extra time for the first session and with patience, a calm approach and positive reinforcement, all horses will go on, even if they hesitate to start with. We ensure they always have a great first experience and have the confidence to walk straight back on the next time.

This is a photo of my daughter's horse William. He went through a phase of being very naughty to load in the lorry. Even he went up in to the treadmill with minimum hesitation!

One of the reason we chose to purchase our water treadmill from FMBs, was the huge amount of training and support we have received. Before opening our doors, we went through an intense training course with FEI vet and treadmill expert Dr Matthias Baumann.

This taught us not only how to use the treadmill safely and correctly, but so we also understand the conditions that Matthias has found it can help to treat and the potential benefits to different horses.

What are the benefits of the water treadmill?

To enhance suppleness, stride length, muscle tone, strength and rehabilitation.

For rehabilitation and as part of training to improve all-over suppleness, stride length, muscle tone and strength for performance and reducing risk of injury.

Through our experience, we have found the treadmill to be the best all round muscle developer. Not only have we seen great results in client's horses but all our dressage horses go on the treadmill several times a week.

The key things we have found with continued use in our own horses are:
- great degree of core strength
- development of muscle, particularly over the back
- improved coordination
