How does 𝑺𝑷𝑰𝑳𝑳𝑬𝑹𝑺™ 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎 & 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒉 support muscle development and health?
Firstly, there is no ‘magic’ feed or supplement that can build muscle and topline in a horse overnight, this isn’t the spinach to Popeye effect! Muscle can only be built and toned by appropriate exercise, however a diet that provides good quality protein through essential amino acids can certainly optimise the process. Exercise itself increases the requirement for protein due to maintenance of new muscle tissue, repair of existing muscle, and replacement of nitrogen lost in sweat so this is why you will find higher levels of protein in performance feeds.
However, instead of just focusing on the amount of protein in a feed, the quality of protein needs to be considered. Quality refers to the ratios of specific amino acids in a protein source, this is why soya bean meal is often used due to its desirable amino acid composition. The quality and composition of protein is important as amino acids must be present within the body in certain ratios to support protein synthesis.
A limiting amino acid is an essential amino acid which is often not provided in adequate amounts in the diet and cannot be synthesised by the body. Any deficiency in essential amino acids has the knock on effect of limiting overall protein synthesis. 𝑷𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎 & 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒉 contains good quality protein with ideal levels of amino acids including lysine which is first limiting in horses.
Research has also found that feeding protein after exercise promotes muscle synthesis, although some specific amino acids have been identified as particularly important to this process. Leucine, isoleucine, and valine are collectively referred to as branch chain amino acids (BCAA) and they can increase muscle synthesis after exercise by providing building blocks, influencing metabolic pathways and acting as a fuel source. 🌿 Spring grass can be packed with fructan, a carb that can trigger laminitis in horses if overindulged.
High fructan levels disrupt gut balance, raising the risk of this painful hoof condition. 👉 Remember to monitor grazing time, introduce pasture gradually, and explore lower-fructan forage options.
Do you know when the fructan level in the pasture grass is particularly high? 📈
When the sun shines, a grass plant carries out a lot of photosynthesis. 🌞🌱 The plant can store the energy gained from this as fructan when the energy is not needed directly for growth.
This is particularly the case in 🥶 cold temperatures, at night or when there is a lack of water. After sunny days and cold nights, as is often the case in spring or autumn, the fructan content in the grass is therefore very high. ⏰ However, the fructan content of grasses can also be very high when pastures are short and dry in summer.
🌿 If a horse eats this grass, a lot of fructan enters the digestive tract and subsequently causes a sharp rise in blood sugar levels. In addition, fructan cannot be broken down by enzymes in the small intestine and thus enters the large intestine, which leads to a change in the intestinal flora. 👉 The resulting gases and toxins are the cause of many of the horse's health problems such as faecal water, diarrhoea, colic and laminitis.
For this reason, caution is always advised on sunny days with cold nights, dry weather and short grass. 🐴💙

We have received feedback that some customers are finding the first of these new batches, 𝗦𝗦𝗕-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰𝟬𝟱𝟭𝟲-𝟬𝟬𝟭 and 𝗦𝗦𝗕-𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰𝟬𝟱𝟯𝟭-𝟬𝟬𝟭, are taking longer the usual 15-30 minutes to soak.

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 due to a combination of the farmer changing to a brand new pelleting die for the new year’s production and the pellets not having much time in storage to naturally settle and loosen. Some years, this will not noticeably effect the soak time, as the ambient temperature is usually higher come June, but this year some customers have found there are still hard lumps remaining after their usual 30 minute soak. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲.

▪ Soak in the morning for your evening feed and evening for your morning feed.
▪ If you have access to it, using hot or warm water will significantly decrease soak time. If using hot water, please do ensure your feed is completely cool before offering.
▪ Increase the amount of water used. If you typically soak in 2.5 times its volume of water, try increasing this to 3 times its volume.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗮𝗴. We know that many of our HayCare customers choose this product specifically for the high fibre and low sugar levels, so wanted to reassure you that this is completely natural and not an indication of increased feed value. The pellets are still 100% Timothy grass, from the same grower, and the nutritional profile remains in line with our specification for this product.

The colour is a richer green than other recent batches as the Timothy grass in these pellets was harvested, dried and pressed only 2-3 weeks ago. As the year goes on the vibrant colour will gradually fade, as you will see if you compare pellets from your previous bag to the new ones. This transition point is not always so noticeable, but the colour difference is particularly stark this year due to the poor weather during the growing season for this cut. It has been incredibly wet, and the standing crop has had little to no sun on it, resulting in a brighter colouring than usual. This has been further exaggerated because the sun bleaching that would usually occur whilst the cut grass dries naturally in the field, before it is collected and finished off in the rotary drier, just hasn’t happened with the overcast weather.

Many of the health risks associated with the feeding of starch are simply due to inappropriate choice of feeds, and the way in which a starch-based feed is fed. The key to successful, healthy feeding of starch is to maintain normal digestive physiological responses in both upper and lower guts and this can be done by following a few simple rules:

1️⃣ Feeding low starch individual meals - either by choosing high calorie feeds that provide those calories using alternative calorie sources such as digestible fibres and oils, or by making a high starch-based feed a low starch meal by feeding smaller but more frequent meals.

2️⃣ Maximising digestion in the small intestine by choosing feeds where the cereals have been processed and cooked (micronizing or steaming) to increase their digestibility, helping to minimise any undigested starch from reaching the hindgut.

3️⃣ Making sure that your horse eats and finishes a small fibre meal (0.9kg) of hay/ chaff before eating a meal containing a moderate amount of starch or sugar. We have been working hard behind the scenes to put together goody bags for the children at our local pony club who had their annual camp here at Codham Park Equestrian.
