As we trudge through the chilly days of January, horse owners know all too well that winter feeding can be a challenge. But take heart—spring is just around the corner! It’s the perfect time to focus on your horse’s condition and topline ahead of the changing season.

True topline refers to the group of muscles running along a horse's spine, from the top of the neck to the withers, down the back and loin, and into the hindquarters. While good topline can only be achieved through appropriate work, it's essential to support muscle development with the right diet. This means supplying your horse with adequate energy (calories) and quality protein in the form of amino acids.

Providing snack balls can be a great way to help reduce boredom and provide a more natural ‘trickle’ feeding rate for stabled horses. However, finding a treat that contains healthy ingredients and is still tasty can sometimes be a challenge. ⚠️ 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖⚠️

Winter weather brings a much greater risk of sudden changes to horses’ diets and routine and therefore a higher risk of colic.

🌿 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗲/𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲:
Apart from all its many other benefits, it also provides physical bulk in the digestive tract to encourage gut motility and potentially reduce the risk of twists or intussusceptions, which could occur if portions of the gut are empty.

💦 𝗘𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻:
If a horse doesn’t drink enough, there is a risk of the gut contents becoming too dry and compacting to cause a blockage.

🐎 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲:
Physical movement helps keep the gut functioning and its contents moving so even a walk round the yard is beneficial.

🥰 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲:
Some changes are unavoidable but make them as gradual as possible and consider keeping a tub of Digest Plus prebiotic on the shelf so that you can support hindgut bacteria during times of change or stress.

𝗙𝘂𝘀𝘀𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿?

It happens from time to time – you might get a batch that your horse just isn’t keen on, or they simply have a “sensitive palate” - which results in:

𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 - as you keep feeding it and they simply leave it and/or walk or poo all over it!
𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – not consuming sufficient fibre from forage means fewer calories and a compromised digestive system
𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 – for your horse, who isn’t continually chewing and may be feeling uncomfortable, and for you as you watch your horse and wallet get slimmer

Firstly, try to work out how much forage your horse really is eating by weighing what you put in and then weighing what is left at the end of a 24 hour period. To maintain condition, they should ideally be eating a minimum of the equivalent of 2% of bodyweight, as forage, per day.

To make up any shortfall, encourage them to eat more of your forage by:

✅Try mixing haylage with your hay or vice versa
✅Add different flavours onto the hay – for example, (cooled) herbal tea, like chamomile or peppermint, applied with a spray bottle to give a good coverage. A solution of water and garlic powder is another option, or diluted fruit cordial or apple juice
✅Change where you feed your forage eg. from a net to the floor or hay bar, or vice versa
✅Steaming the hay, if a steamer is available

Or provide some forage replacement/fibre alternatives, like Natural Meadow Cobs, Alfalfa Blend or Fibre-Beet, and:

✅Feed them separately from any hard feed, as a “haynet in a bucket”
✅Offer more than one option, in different buckets, to encourage natural foraging behaviour - as your horse browses from one to another they’ll increase their overall fibre intake

It's unnatural for them to be inside where they are exposed to dust, bacteria and potential viruses. This in turn can irritate the airways and cause them to cough. Coughing is a defensive reflex for the lungs, the horse starts coughing in order to clean its airways of dust and bacteria. In Autumn and winter, horses are kept in for longer periods. Many coughs are harmless and will go away within a few days, Gentle exercise can help get rid of the mucus. However horses with runny, wet nasal discharge should be kept away from other horses to be on the safe side. If you have any doubts, we suggest to always call your vet for advice. 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚'𝙨 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚'𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝🤔 🔹 Avoid dry hay, feed haylage if you can and if this is not possible soak/steam your horses hay ration. 🔹 Avoid Straw, Dust free wood shavings are best. 🔹 Leave your horse outside as long as possible. 🔹 Feeding a respiratory supplement such as 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙯𝙚 𝙪𝙥 can aid your horses airways.
