✨ REUNITED ✨ As Cat Microchipping is now a legal requirement for cat owners we thought we would share a lovely moment from earlier this week when Merlin was finally reunited with his owner thanks to scanning his microchip when he was brought into the practice as a stray.
Merlin was brought in by a couple from Hayton, where he had been hanging around for months. Thankfully when our vet scanned him, he did have an ID chip! Our reception staff then called his owner who was delighted to here he was ok as he had been missing from his home in Heads Nook since October last year and with no sightings his owner had presumed she was never going to see him again. This was the moment Owner and Merlin were happily reunited after his 8 month long adventure. 🥰🐱

🐍 Adders 🐍

As the weather begins to warm, we have noticed an increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

What you need to know about the introduction of compulsory microchipping for Cats:-

🐈 All Cats in England must be microchipped by 10th June 2024. (keepers found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted or may face a fine up to £500)

🐾 Kittens must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks

🐈‍ Cat keepers must also ensure that their contact details are kept up to date on a pet microchipping database such as identibase.

🐈 Microchipping involves a small microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) being inserted under your cat’s skin. It’s a very simple procedure that is no more painful for them than an injection, and there is no recovery time needed.

🐾 Microchipping is inexpensive and can be done in a routine appointment with one of our vets or vet nurse's at a time convenient to you.

Microchipping all cats will assist our lost cats being identified and returned home as soon as possible.

Did you know that 25% of cats in the UK have not been microchipped? This means that of the approximately 2.8 million cats that aren’t microchipped in the UK, those living in England will need to be chipped by 10th June 2024 when the new legislation comes into place. 🐾This is Fern...🐾 a lively young pup who has been keeping us on our toes recently. We thought you might like to follow her story.

Back in January while out for a walk with her owner,(who just so happens to be one of our own Veterinary Nurses), she had an accident while navigating a stile that was feared to have resulted in a broken leg. Fern was rushed in to the practice to see one of our Vets, who administered pain-relief and fully examined Fern to check all her other vital signs were stable. We then performed X-rays and they confirmed what was already suspected... a broken Tibia and fibula! Whilst still under anaesthesia the leg was dressed to keep her comfortable over night and we prepared for surgery the following day.

The next morning our nurses prepared Fern for Dan to perform surgery. Dan has a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Surgery) and is highly experienced in this field. The nature of the break meant it was necessary for 2 titanium plates to be placed at opposite angles to each other. These were held in place with 12 screws to keep the fracture stable. The surgery took over 3 hours to complete. Fern was then transferred to one of our comfortable kennels while she came round from the anaesthetic; she rested there for 2 hours, while monitored by our nursing team, before being sent home later that day to continue resting in her own home environment. She was fitted with a cone collar to ensure she was unable to reach her wound and a specialised tinned diet which would be sensitive on her stomach post op, and further pain relief medication to keep her comfortable.

The recovery for this type of procedure means Fern needed to be on strict rest for the next 14 days, with a follow-up appointment scheduled for later in the week. Once Fern had recovered from her anaesthesia and supported with her on-going pain relief medication she felt good as new! It was still vital to keep her quiet to allow the break to fuse and her stitches to heal. This of course can be easier said than done with a 8 month old puppy who just wants to play!
