Little life update

Things have been knocked back a little bit at the moment
I’m not quite sure where I stand or what my situation is quite yet so I’m going to take a little break and get back to my roots
Be assured Ems animal services will still be running and return once I’m feeling myself again
Thank you

What is my viewpoint on pet cats?
Picture of beautiful Boo for tax

I’ve recently had an interesting debate about should cats be indoors or outdoors
This debate was with an American lady, America has different pet care and laws to us here in the uk
It was interesting to see her viewpoints I’d like to evaluate the pros and cons here

My personal opinion is *generally* cats should be a mixture of indoors and outdoors. The cat should be living inside but able to explore outside. For me, this is the best way to meet the 5 animal needs stated in the animal welfare act 2006 for the cat. I used to live in a quiet village and my cat was able to display many positive behaviours that she would not of been able to do inside. I also agree with TNR processes (tag neuter release) as this does not harm the animal but it prevents an excess of kittens. Generally a lot of feral cats aren’t suited to be housed into a typical family home after being out for so long. I do not agree with having multiple cats in one household as *generally* cats are a solitary species, eventhough they tolerate eachother doesn’t always mean they want to live together.

The American lady I spoke to had the viewpoint of cats should always be an indoor pet no matter what, I do agree somewhat in terms of if you live in a city or in a busy area as the outdoors poses more of a risk to your cat.
The lady also raised the point of cats being an issue for the local wildlife, I do agree cats shouldn’t be overpopulating the area however this was a grey area as of course we live in such different communities

Long story short it’s always interesting to discuss differences in opinions, pet care and the differences in other countries standards

Pet owner tip of the day!
Wherever possible buy in bulk and concentrates *generally* it’s so much cheaper in the long run!!!
This bale of aubiose lasted me about 6 months before for only £18 I would of used lord knows how many small packs of bedding in that time for approx £7 a bag
The safe4 concentrates are a life saver for making disinfect cleaner and pet safe laundry detergent, before I discovered them I was paying £4 a time for a bottle of premixed pet disinfectant
The white vinegar was £7 for 10L on Amazon and this can be used all round the house

Why should we be avoiding these chew toys?
- the majority are made with sawdust
- often honey or other sweet things are used to ’glue’ them together
- sometimes they’re flavoured so your small pet may ingest the wood which can lead to impaction

Pets at home have now begun stocking versions not made with sawdust but they do still contain wood shavings and because they’re flavoured by the bonding agents they do pose an impaction risk

So what can we do instead?
- provide natural chews
- whimzees are generally safe for rats
- check the ingredients/wood type used in your pets chews
- aim to shop at small pet specific shops as they tend to stock more suitable products for example the rat warehouse

Why am I so against exercise balls?
- not enough ventilation
- far too small for the animals
- incredibly stressful and cruel for the animal
- toes and tails can be trapped in the gaps
- makes them feel exposed
- fairly easy to accidentally open so good chance of escapees
- the animal can’t use its senses to explore its surroundings inside a plastic ball
- incredibly unhygienic for the pet
- conveys pets as ‘toys’
- puts the animals spine in an incredibly awkward position
- exposes the pet to any other animals in the household for example it’s not difficult for a playful dog to open one of these balls by knocking them about and then possibly munching on your small pet

What can you do if you have one of these?
- Ziptie it to the side of the cage (if safe) as an extra bed without the lid of course
- put it in the bin 😊

Unfortunately we had to say goodnight to Eggs earlier this week
Eggs was a lover of collecting certain pasta shapes and organising them neatly
He loved to steal biscuits so he could wash them in his bed
Eggs had a rapid acting brain tumour that was destroying his quality of life incredibly quickly so we had to make the decision to have him put down so he wouldn’t suffer anymore
Eggs enjoyed all the love and cuddles before his sleep
Rest in peace buddy ❤️
(Only healthy eggs photos shown as his end of life was quite distressing to witness as a major rat mum)

Why am I against retractable leads?

- Most are not strong enough and could break
- It is difficult to keep control of the dog when using this type of lead, the lead allows the dog to move quickly away from you and is hard to guide them back to you quickly in emergencies
- The bulky handle means you are unable to control the length of the lead quickly and safely in the event of emergency, the handle also makes it difficult to control where your dog is going because you’re unable to get a good grip to guide them
- I just don’t like them 😂

All hands on deck behind the scenes to get up and running as soon as possible! Unfortunately I can’t open until I have my own space, which is proving more difficult than I thought 😅

I’ve been a busy bee educating myself on the Brazilian black tarantula (Grammostola Pulchra) This majestic animal could be the next addition to my collection…

After owning Banjo and Levi for a couple weeks now, their personalities really are shining 😂

Banjo explores lots and tolerates handling very well

Levi tolerates handling well but would much rather stay buried

A good day of searching rock pools for sea creatures yesterday!

Remember when you go rockpooling to
- Treat the pools with respect, they are homes to many creatures!
- Wear sturdy and thick soled shoes for example boots as you do not want your toes nipped by a crab or to be stung by a weever fish by accident
- Take a bucket to view your finds, make sure to fill it with sea water first!
- Take a net or stick with you to gently sweep around the pools, don’t go right in with your hands or else you may have an unpleasant surprise from a crab or weever fish
- Most importantly, put any creatures back where you found them

Can you spot my mature male and female roaches?

Fun fact dubia roaches are a white colour straight after moulting their exoskeleton, their dark colour returns a few hours later!

What makes Em’s animal services stand out from the many amazing animal businesses?

Hi I’m Em, I’ve grown up around all different kinds of animals my whole life! I’m qualified at high grades in exotic health and husbandry, animal training, animal health, animal nursing, breeding and welfare and more! I’ve had years of experience with a range of animals.
I’m incredibly confident with livestock, exotics, domestic pets and birds.
I’m still gaining knowledge and experience with aquatics and higher risk zoo animals.

In this picture you can see my favourite place where I had so many learning opportunities and experiences! I volunteered and worked at cherry tree farm for a couple years to gain more and more knowledge and confidence

I hope to continue my animal career with your help! I’d like to offer pet sitting, breeding services, education talks and handling with animals of your choice, rescue and rehabilitation and much more!

Another mouse relocated this morning

Remember to thoroughly clean your humane trap each time you set it. Although rare in the uk, mice can carry leptospirosis which is spread through their urine, cleaning your trap each time reduces the risk of the mouse and yourself from being infected. Always better to be safe than sorry

A few of my Dubia roaches hanging out together on their new coco shelter

My largest male roach seems to be making his way round the ladies so we may have some babies soon

These guys can make wonderful first time pets to teach children about the responsibilities of animal care. They are fairly low maintenance and incredibly low cost!
Dubia roaches are more commonly kept as feeder insects for reptiles such as lizards, so they are very readily available for purchase in small colonies (6-8 roaches via PAH) for a small cost.
They require a secure tank or plastic tote to thrive, personally I keep mine on coco fibre substrate but this isn’t always necessary. You can provide them with conditioned water or bug gel, I prefer the gel as these guys are quite good at sleeping in the water!

As always no pet is a ‘throw away’ pet every animal you bring into your home should be treated well and with respect (for feeders treat them well until they treat your animals tummy well) please do as much reliable research as possible before bringing an animal into your family, this means looking at many different sources of information and asking different breeders about their stock.

Recently we had some work done so the cages had to move for the day, shoes wasn’t best pleased but at least he could observe from his special sulking tunnel

A reminder to keep pets out of the space when having work done, fumes or loud sounds may be distressing for your pets so best to keep them elsewhere until you’re all finished ♥️
