ARE YOU SLOWLY KILLING YOUR DOG
I am a passionate dog lover and owner; we have owned dogs for 40 years, i want to do the best for them and yet I asked myself that question after we lost 2 dogs to cancer. After doing some research I found statistics showed dogs were dying earlier than they did years ago and I am sure many factors contribute to that statistic and I believe dog food is one of them. So I did some research and was surprised to find that the majority of dog foods are owned by the same 4 big companies; in fact you could say they have cornered the market. Let me show you who they are and what they own
MARS: Pedigree, Cesar, Chappie, Frolic, Pal, Nutro, Greenies, James Wellbeloved, Royal Canin,
NESTLES: Bakers, Bonio, Winalot, Beta, ProPlan, Purina, Tails, Lily's Kitchen.
COLGATE-PALMOLIVE: Hills Science Paln , Hills Prescription Diets.
PROCTOR& GAMBLE: Eukanuba, Iams.
These are big companies with massive buying power and advertising budgets to match; they also understand the power of veterinary recommendations and so they sponsor veterinary nutritional modules in college. We see adverts and vets referrals extolling the quality and health giving properties of their products. Veterinary practices often sell their food.
When you buy a bag of dog food for your dog you are paying for the ingredients, the manufacturing, the travel costs , the checks that are done on the food through out the process as the (dog food industry is highly regulated and foods must meet regulations and be capable of meeting your dogs nutritional needs and keep them alive) then you pay for the bag so with all that to pay for in the purchase price you would expect some budget foods to contain fillers and meat meals maybe some artificial colours and preservatives but maybe you expect some of the premium brands to have quality ingredients with bags costing £40 to £65 .
So maybe you would be surprised to know some of the premium brands can be 70% or more carbohydrate with high grain content and low meat or fish content of 20% or less. Ingredient lists that hide how high a grain content is by splitting it up in the listing for instance maize (corn) maize gluten , maize flour is all maize ! The process of hydrolysis protein can create mono sodium glutamate which causes food addiction in people. Then there are the E numbers the artificial colours and preservatives.
All of these things and the high grain content of some foods make the food hard for your dog to metabolise which robs the body of vital nutrients and means your dogs vital organs and digestive tract will have to work hard to digest the food. Wheat and maize are cheap fillers that help to form the biscuit which is cooked at a high temperature so high in fact that meat meal is used rather than fresh meat or fish changing the protein molecules.
There are many good ways to feed your dog. I wanted one that would provide all of the 37 essential nutrients my dogs needed, i wanted one that included fresh meat, fish and veg and cooked at a low temperature; I did look at raw but we don't really have the freezer space with 3 big dogs and i did want convenience too. I decided to start Leaping Dog Petfood the name was inspired by Holly who used to jump over some really big leaps for fun in her youth. I now feed all 3 of our dogs on our own Leaping Dog Petfood yes this is an advert for Leaping Dog Petfood so if you would like more information please do contact us we are dog owners and dog lovers like you
