Thanks to everyone that attended our grazing management meeting last night!

Lots of concepts to consider, with a realisation that rotational grazing takes many forms but offers universal benefits for any farm.

Great work: Black Mountains Farm Services team, Humphrey, Gareth & Blade Farming!

Use the mild, wet conditions to your advantage this autumn:

Soil temperatures are still high enough to allow for good grass growth despite shortening daylight hours. Building a grass reserve into winter is critical for allowing early turnout onto what will still be a high quality feed.
Grass measurement and total area calculations are the cherry on the cake! The items below are all the equipment you need to get started.

Earlier today:- after noticing a ewe had started to turn blue, struggling to breathe, we decided to perform an emergency tracheotomy (making a hole in the windpipe). A cut-down 5ml syringe barrel ended up serving as an indwelling breathing tube!

On my travels this weekend (near Ledbury) I spotted a really good little grazing set-up. A block split with permanent fencing into equal sized paddocks. Various stages of regrowth can be seen with cows & calves grazing at optimal sward height and surplus being baled off as high quality silage. Let us know if you're interested in implementing this type of system on your farm!

As later born spring lambs are weaned, now is a good time to explore the potential of paddock grazing systems for finishing lambs on grass.

Low risk pasture - ideally spring grazed by cattle or new leys post silage harvest - offer the best options for maximising performance ๐Ÿ’ช.

If you would like to know more, give us a call!

Before weaning lambs it is a good idea to carry out parasite surveillance using faecal worm egg counts. It is quick and easy to randomly pool 6-10 fresh samples and examine them with the equipment pictured below ๐Ÿ‘€.

Weighing lambs at this stage can either add to existing performance data or provide a one-off basis on which to estimate growth rate. In order to slow down anthelminitic (drench) resistance, targeted selective treatment (TST) of individual lambs can be utilised.

If you have any questions about worm control in lambs, please feel free to give us a call!
