Just a thought. Is there anyone out there who might like to do some foal gentling for me with the new palomino baby filly… it’d be great to have a tame baby & name her too - any suggestions?

Another busy couple of weeks here. Misty had a beautiful c**t foal, and then Hazel had another c**t foal. No names as yet, suggestions always welcome!

Paul led a Beacons Triangle, this time the lucky guests got to stay at the lux , a 5 star country house hotel, and everyone was very happy despite a bit of low cloud which meant the views weren’t as good as they could have been. This trail is about getting high up into the Beacons, although they are now called Bannau Brycheiniog so perhaps we will need to change the name….

We’ve had some fun weekends and shorter trails too. Nice to have some rain at last although we don’t want too much more of it thanks!

Transwales Christmas Newsletter 2022

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Hopefully things become quieter in the New Year after 2022 after all the politics, the Queen's platinum jubilee and funeral, war in Ukraine, football and world happenings going on in 2023. It certainly was very dry during the summer as well as being very warm. I can't imagine this while it is freezing outside! With the cost of living causing fuel & food to become more expensive and strikes by everyone, who knows what lies ahead.… A nice quiet, 'normal' year would be welcomed in 2023! Anyway onwards with the round-up of this past year.

Family News

This year Nesta has moved up from her Welsh Primary School (Ysgol y Bannau) to senior school – Gwernyfed High School. She has settled in very well. Della is the last one left at the Welsh school and is doing really well with a talent for the stage emerging having qualified for the National Championships at the Urdd Eisteddfod. Nye is happily cruising through year 9, and has had a very successful season playing football for Hay junior FC. . During the year Paul's dad Mike Turner has had a very turbulent time with heart trouble and then kidney problems. He is however now feeling better – albeit cold due to the short snap of cold weather we have at present. Emily's mum Elain has had a new left knee to match her right one. Emily has continued with her cold water swimming and is well into the second year of her Psychotherapy course. Paul has had his 4th covid jab but has been suffering from a cold due to the changeable weather in early December. Emily’s younger brother and family have now moved into the area too which is nice for the whole family. Later in the year our lovely yellow Labrador dog Summer died suddenly which was a terrible blow to the family. Just four weeks earlier we had welcomed 'Otto', our new fox-red labrador puppy (now 6 months old and turning out very nicely). Paul went to watch Wales playing the All Blacks and Australia in November although now we need a new rugby coach. We had our annual trip to Cornwall in May and are skiing in Italy over Christmas, a rare chance to get away when no-one wants a riding holiday!

Trail News

This year we ran 9 Trans-Wales rides and many Hay Triangles and plenty of Hay and Llanthony Loops which Rosie and Kirsty shared between them. Paul also started running the newly revived Beacons Triangle taking guests over to Brecon and Talybont before returning to the Blaenau our base. The groups have tended to be small and select as the accommodations are small but the scenery is awesome.
The local rides have been very popular too with many people coming for our fun pub rides. Unfortunately the Three Horseshoes Pub closed at the start of October but we are hoping that it will reopen with new owners in the Spring. Similarly the Dragon's Back (previously the Castle Inn) has been bought by lovely Julie and Ray and we are now able to ride there again after many years. There are a few other places that we can ride to now and we hope to keep supporting them – as they say use them or lose them.
We struggled a bit during the two heat waves in August, but our riders were brilliant at being flexible, and one Hay Loop departed at 8am to beat the heat!

Guest News

This year felt like the first normal one after the pandemic. We loved welcoming guests from both the UK and abroad, and it was brilliant to see so many familiar faces as well as meeting new riders for the first time.
We have had guests from March right through to mid November and luckily this year with no Covid interruptions. Stuey visited us twice this year – early in February and then again in November. Paul's mate Rob from University and his daughter Natasha visited for the first time. A great time was had by all. We have welcomed Barry here several times this year as well as Jane the Geordie too. Many regulars who are too many to name have returned this year, you know who you are, and for this we thank you all. It is always wonderful for us to see the magic happen, when a group of people gather together to share their passion for riding.

Farm News

We have continued feeding the biomass this year although with it being so dry for so long we had the odd issue with water supply over at Cwmfforest. Overall we survived it though. We did manage to make enough hay to hopefully see us through the winter again. Tim helped build a new paddock for keeping the horses in. We only managed to bring on one bottle-fed lamb after his little friend died, but as a result he became hugely friendly and was often found in the kitchen, and became known as Baa Ram Ewe. He finally decided he was a sheep rather than a dog and now lives with the rest of our very small herd of survivors. We made loads of apple juice and cider too this autumn as it was a great apple harvest. And we also ate lots of field mushrooms!

Staff News

We continue to feel very blessed with our amazing team, with Kirsty and Rosie at the core. As you’ll
know if you have ridden with them, they are both simply brilliant at what they do, looking after both riders and horses - it’s not easy! Rosie has helped take most of the Transwales rides this year except during August when she had a few weeks off for her new stunt-woman riding career – jousting and firing bows and arrows off a horse! Mazza has helped out as always bringing the riders back on the trails. Rowena hasn't been able to take rides out this year as her daughter Manon is still only 1 year old but she’s joined us for a couple of jollies. We also had a few part-time helpers – Simon and Amelie during late May / early June and Nacho from Barcelona in September / October. Poppy went to the US to do a summer Pony Club camp and only came back in time for the end of the season. She has now taken Rocko to ride herself at Sophie's place with Rosie. Sue has been very helpful in various ways, and is thinking of moving closer to us as well as helping over Xmas, which we very much appreciate!

Competition News

This year we had limited competition stuff going on. Four horses went to the Spring Fair for a shoeing competition. Paul, Rosie and Sue all did the 3 year delayed Man vs Horse competition in Llanwrtyd Wells with 4 paying guests. Paul managed to finish for the first time on his third attempt and indeed he won the best local having finished the 22.5 miles of arduous terrain in 2 hours & 33 minutes. This was the 6th rider in while the whole event was won by a man – Ricki Lightfoot finishing in 2 hours, 22 mins & 22 secs. So he was quick. This was followed by the Royal Welsh Show, Brecon Show and Usk Show where Paul competed in the Hunt Relays with the Brecon & Talybont Hunt or the Border Counties. We did alright but no wins this year.

Horse News

This year we have had a few changes in our herd of horses. Firstly we broke in Nico, the palomino 4 year old. He has been used quite a bit this year. We were hoping to breed 3 foals this year but after Misty had her foal Llewelyn, Daisy lost her foal and Nicole didn't have one at all. In October we also lost old age William who was 31. In April we went to Brecon Horse Sales and Emily bought 'Charlie' who is a 10 hand Section A pony and is very cute but too small for anyone to ride unfortunately. He now hangs out with Bambi – another Section A gelding that Emily bought -can you see a theme emerging? Paul bought himself a stallion 'Pennal Comet' who apart from being difficult to catch has spent most of the summer hanging out with our brood mares and is very lovely.
Later on in the year we went to the October sales and Paul bought 9 year old 'Highwayman' aka 'H' and a friendly dun foal called Pedro. Emily then bought 2 more foals from Libanus and 2 Section D cobs from Devon. They are all growing up happily and a few need breaking in.

Horse News

This autumn we have as usual loaned out some horses. Theresa and Passion have gone to live with Caroline up on Talgarth Common. Bob, Cobweb, Jonah, Lizzie, Nicole and JLS (aka Smoothie) were brought back from west Wales when we took some horses for their annual rest. Hartpury have only taken Esther, Ebony and Britannia this year. Echo and Mia both went back to their previous loaners places from last year. Rhian and Bob have als been loaned out and Maisie has returned to her owner Colin along with her youngster Sparkles who he is breaking in already. Emily has also been on a search for some bigger b***d horses for the bigger b***d riders that we tend to have more of these days. As a result we have now purchased Del Boy and Snip Snap. We have also got Millie to look after having swapped her for Viking for the winter. We are then going to break in at least 3 youngsters in the early part of 2023. Keep your eyes peeled for the newbies.

Anyway all the best for Xmas, and wishing you all a very happy New Year.

Paul, Emily, Nye, Nesta, Della & Otto the dog X
